When a challenge is issued and accepted, do the two characters fight until one is killed or do they rejoin their unit after 1 round of fighting?

The Challengers fight each combat phase until one of them is dead, DEAD I TELLS YA!

Also, they don't leave their units to fight a challenge, they stay in their units but just can't be attacked or attack models outside of the challenge. They no longer move off to the side, but one of them does have to move to the other, while staying in their units.

So if they stay with their units and fight each other until 1 is killed, what happens if one of the units flees whilst the challenge is going on?

Then the character flees with them the same as normal. The challenge was ended by the unit and character all fleeing together. Being in a challenge doesn't make you not be part of the unit and doesn't protect you from breaking, it is just a way to have a nice duel in combat with a few specified rules. But aside from the rules listed in the challenges section (like about who can hit whom and how mounts work in challenges), challenges don't affect how a combat works in any other way.

of course if 2 characters do meet in combat and are not part of a unit, should one issue a challenge it must be accepted and they will fight till one is dead. monster riding character in particular suffer from that. assuming a ball of lead doesn't kill it first.... but it makes it a pretty epic fight.
