View Full Version : What do you listen to while painting?

I started out "watching" various tv shows, but dropped that since I was really only listening anyway. Books on tape are great, but expensive and the things I want to read don't always get me into the vibe of the grim dark. Unless I'm painting LOTRSBG then I could listen to LOTR again and again. But my latest go to while painting are the TED Talks. There is nothing more grim dark than real life. I usually pick out the ones on ecological disasters, or future technologies that are here now. Give it a shot.

for me its the horus heresy audio books :)

or the doors........ something about Jims tone just keeps me painting.... though horse latitudes sometimes can be a little distracting.

my painting circle has been known to have the odd bit of slayer and rollins band right down to oasis and paul weller. but the slayer and stuff was a while ago... back in our teens and twenties LOL

I've never been a big music lover so around the house my background noise is my television. So I'll tune into the History Channel, Discovery, AMC, or Fox News since I'm an evil right winger and listen to them as I work on my models. When it comes to the handful of shows I actually want to watch I'll do my models later.

Since I do most of my modelling and painting in my barracks, I get to listen to a menagerie of young soldiers wrestling, yelling, playing loud awful rap music, things/people being tossed around and general pandemonium. It used to be distracting, but now I have grown used to it. It kinda makes me feel like I can paint in a warzone. So its good training in my opinion. If i do have a choice of listening music it is usually something lite like easy listening.

I listen to the band "American Football." I don't need a drimgark musical inspiration session. I need calming music that helps calm meself so i can paint shenanigans. In a non shenanigan way of course.

I normally paint out on my patio in the evening, I just enjoy the quite after a busy day.

When I'm painting I usually watch/ listen to musicals. Namely Moulin Rouge, Glee, Phantom of the Opera, Repo! and the like. Alternatively I like to listen to 40k podcasts here and there to mix it up but generally I have a hard time finding ones that arent just a total boys club with fart jokes and the like. Failing either of those I like to listen to Russian pop music, the stylings of Nyusha and Chi-li being personal favourites of mine... Then again thats what all 40k players listen to/ watch, right?... Right?

Not this 40k player Jenn.

Generally I catch the 11th Company podcast and a few others if I have the time while painting/modeling. I've also watched shows on Hulu or Netflix in the past, though I find it can be a little distracting.

For music I am a 90's kid so lots of Alternative/Grunge/Punk stuff. Whatever is in my playlist gets shuffled on random, so there can be quite a mix of music.

Depends a bit on the mood, some nice engaging bass music, like lounge, UK dub, chill music in general.
Or melodic and not too hectic death metal like Opeth, Thurisaz, Ghost Brigade, Swallow The Sun.

Or a 40K audio book :D

If I have a movie on, I usually end up watching the show as opposed to painting. So I usually listen to 40k podcasts: 11th Company, 40KUK, and Life after the Cover Save. They are all nice and long, so I can get a decent amount of painting in at a shot.

You could always get books on tape from your local librarium. Just don't return the data slates back late, or the librarians might smite you.

I'm a bit bipolar when it comes to music, going from Chopin to Metallica to Prodigy, as an example. For me it's really about how the music relates to the model/squad I'm painting. This helps me get in the mood to paint all the orks for my green tide.
Songs like: Nocturne op.9 / Blitzkrieg / Texas flood / Warrior's Dance / Don't stop me now / etc...

I find I listen to things more now that I'm painting. I used to watch movies or shows, but now that I've gotten good enough to care about where the paint goes, I find myself paying more attention to that and thus listening rather than watching.

Generally, I prefer podcasts like the 11th Company, Independent Characters and Screaming Heretic or audio books. In a pinch, the local classic rock station will do.

Depends on what I'm painting, but it's almost always a game soundtrack. I've been on a Hitoshi Sakimoto (mostly Final Fantasy 12, but some of his Final Fantasy Tactics and Valkyria Chronicles* stuff) kick lately with a few songs from Blazblue.

*This one is most fitting for my continued efforts to paint my guardsmen like the Gallian Militia.

I don't really listen to "Grimdark" music for a painting mood. A lot of my Tyranids were painted to Jimmy Buffet and the Beatles, and then my WIP Marines have been mostly Boston with a bit of Queen.

Really depends on the time of day. Lately I've been doing a lot of painting during the early hours of the morning (Unemployment sucks, but it does mean I get to keep what hours I want for the most part) and the quiet helps me focus. During the day though it's either 80's rock & pop, or else a folder I have of mp3's of my favourite tunes from the movies. Put winamp on random play and repeat and chill out listening to great themes from John Williams, Danny Elfman, James Horner, Howard Shore, David Arnold, Bear McCreary and a few more.

The best thing to listen to when working on your models are the voices in your head. Am I right?

Of course you are right sir. You're a man of greatness after all.
Why thank you for those kind words!

Podcasts, audio books or plays, the previous day's Daily Show/Colbert Report. Sometimes have playlists from youtube going. If I'm not alone I have to listen to whatever is on the TV (the Gwen is currently switching between Bratz movies and the animated Avengers series.)

I usually just put my Zune on shuffle. If I had to pick a band, it'd be Dream Theater or System of a Down. And it had better be loud enough to filter everything else out.

I used to paint to The Wall. Every time I hear any songs from that album I taste paint.

I listen to my wife ... nagging me on why is it I'm wasting time with childish things, not working on the house, not paying attention to her, not exercising, not taking her out to dinner, not taking care of her pets, not ..., not ..., not ..., etc., etc., etc. ...........

Actually no. She's a good woman and puts up with a lot from me and I'm lucky to have her. Only every once in a great while does she have a WTF moment.

When I'm painting I prefer silence. When I'm working in a delicate area, I'll sometimes concentrate on the beat of my heart in order to time my brush stroke.

I focus pretty intently while I'm working, so I tend to just turn on some music or leave the tv on Scifi or Food Network. A little background noise to keep me from getting lonely.

You, sir, are AWESOME for the reference.

For me, I am not quite yet to the painting stage, but while assembling I have been listening to things like ME3 soundtrack, Final Fantasy Tactics, some LotR music, Star Wars soundtracks, but mainly game soundtracks.

Oooh, no. I couldn't do it. I'd stop painting and just listen to the music. Late at night, I love Jazz, especially if it has a Latin rhythm, something like >>this<< (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_PhRgXNbXwk), or >>this<< (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JeHgNqbdBKs). That could just be my roots coming out, though.

I find that audiobooks are great for when I'm painting, but finding good scifi books can be hard sometimes. And if I can't concentrate on the book I usually switch over to my spotify playlist, basically a mish mash of different kinds of metal, anything from Iron Maiden, Sabaton (great 40k music as they have a WWII theme on most of their stuff), Danzig, Judas Priest, to heavier stuff such as Entombed, Graveworm and Raubtier gets my painting mood going.

Some of the bands mentioned above are probably to small and/or regional for most of BoLS members, so here are some links for those interested in metal music.

Raubtier (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ogLwHEPyXBE&list=UUMNfcuhfcXJDr-EdSAD9sGg&index=8&feature=plcp) (Swedish lyrics)
Sabaton (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FGCdRLWkwhA&list=UUjQhd1APsd5NQhiVZV7GYzg&index=10&feature=plcp)
Graveworm (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mKVCOAVJiyU) (I need a hero cover, lolz)

BBC radio 4 extra is good for painting to. They have some good old radio plays, a sci-fi hour, old detective stuff and some cracking old BBC radio comedy like the goon show. Either that or some power electronics.

I usually paint while watching tv but when I do listen to music while painting, it's not the noise that seems to be very popular with the online 40k-ers. I'm a fair bit older than most of you so that's not terribly surprising. In the couple of towns I've played regularly I've not seen many people in the group who are enthralled by death metal/thrash metal/etc... that seems very popular with the online crowd. Generally I have extremely varied taste in music excluding rap, death metal, and twangy country. I am most likely to be listening to melodic metal, progressive rock, some electronica, female adult alternative vocalists, Irish folk, movie soundtracks, and filk.

Personally I prefer music, tv will distract me with moving pictures and audiobooks make me sick, for some reason I hate the idea of a machine reading to me. I mostly listen to various styles of metal, anything from Amon Amarath to Nightwish.

I watch Hulu since most of the time shows come up that I dont really care about. If something comes on that catches my attention and I start to focus too much on it, then it shows badly in my painting! (happens probably too often)

Usually a youtube channel of a random band i heard on the radio that week, sometimes a season of a good tv series. Has a side effect of grouping batches of models to certain soundtracks when i look at them now.
Empire models sound like Metric and Hey Ocean, Ogres are Sons of Anarchy and Game of Thrones.

depends on the mood, but usually ill just put on netflix and throw on some standup comedy or a tv show that i dont have to have my full attention on, if im doing a big project (terrain or vehicles) ill throw on some metal (american metal is the best, cant stand that euro emo "metal") and drink an energy drink
