View Full Version : Need Help Picking A Unique Necron Scheme

I need some ideas for a necrons color scheme. This is important because if I don't find one I will eventually lose interest and waste all the money I put in buying minis for my army. To many people this might sound stupid or whatever but I have innattentive adhd that is not entirely managed by medication and it pretty much controls my life. It has manifested itself into the 40k hobby where if I can't stick to and paint a cool/interesting color scheme for my army I get distraught and end up just moving on to something else. This happened in the past where I wasted 1000s of dollars on armies in the past but that was before I was in treatment for my disorder. I hope that now, and the help of some members, I can finally beat this thing and be able to create a full fledged army.

But I am also looking for other ideas as to what scheme people consider unique and cool. I've looked allover, the necrons forum sticky that has peoples various army pictures and coolminiornot but nothing seems to really pop out to me. Not that they arnt painted well, just not the looks I would go for

If anyone has any pictures to share online or of their own that can sort of inspire me in a certain direction, that would be great. Painting is my favorite part of the hobby, but its also what holds me up the most. These pictures anyone posts of sample schemes would be greatly appreciated.

I kind of like either bone scheme or black/blue scheme. Here are some examples I found around the internet. If you can tell me your thoughts, please do so, it would mean a lot. Or if you can post some unique ones you find, it would be really helpful for me, which that would be fantastic too.

Please help, and thanks in advance.

Here are the blue/black ones. Sorry for double posting, but it wouldn't let me put all 6 in the same post.

The blue/black one reminds me of Tron... perhaps you might look into variations of that scheme by checking out the movie.

Also; inattentive ADHD... same here. Instead of just focussing on painting there's more to an army. Armylist building, reading up tactics... and a big one, that helps me. Do not spend everything on an army at once. Do the squads/boxes one at a time. Force yourself to keep a slow but managable pace. That way... if it would happen that you that you lose interest, you wont have spend hundreds of dollars at once, but might perhaps just spend a hundred on 2 boxes, just to pick that up when you get back into it, without having heaps that might appear overwhelming.

But that's just my 2 cents

The blue reeks too much of Tron. You want something fairly unique, why not take the black and change the blue into orange?

Mordian Blue for the armor and gold trim. Call them the Ultranecrons.

A GW staff member once taught me a neat trick. Paint a squad with the standard guys first and the special guys/sergeant/ heavy weapons last as a sort of 'treat'.

Paint the characters as a reward for a number of completed squads.

Also, I think we are expecting the new paint range to be less bright and more of a muted colour, so if you want bright buy the paints now (or use alternatives).

Granted it doesn't reek like Tron as in "on movie posters"-Tron, but it still reeks of the Tron movie ;)

But yeah, that's what I was getting at with my comment. You might check that movie; there's blue, orange, yellow, a more red-ish... all in a similar style. perhaps a bright green might work as well. Besides, you already have the green rods then.

The biggest thing with necrons is that they don't really have special guys in their squads. Necrons as squads are in general quite uniform as far as I know.

Same principle applies-

10 warriors done- ill treat myself to a cryptek to paint!

5 deathmarks done- Lord o clock!

Horrendous number of scarabs finished- C'tan Shard gets its paint on.

All that done- Special character time!

Its adaptable.

I love the bone and green, I have also seen bone and purple that look great. My crons are bronze and green, it is a nice look.

That really tickles me. The blue good guys were vastly outnumbered by the orange badguys in NuTron. If you're looking for unique, I don't think I've ever seen a necron army painted up in 'Old Tron' style. Take that bone color scheme, and add in lots of blue (or red or even green) glow.

Or you could put the Tesla back into your Iron Men. Lots of brass and copper, paired with and electric blue glow. Murderous metal monstrosities powered by Nikola's amazing broadcast power. C'mon. You know you want to.

Oooh that would look great. Add some gold in there and you have a very royal looking scheme.

Which reminds me, I need to update my gallery entries.

Hope that helps to inspire.

Thanks for the advice so far guys.

What do you think about the purple and bone? I did a quick photoshop of the first picture to get a feel for how it might look. Yeah I know it looks fake but it kind of gives you a small idea of what it would look like.

Actually, white and purple could work quite well as a color scheme, particularly if you're going for a shadowy/mysterious effect. As example:

You could also go with a set of the naturalistic colors and traditional color pairings that the armies of ancient Egypt ant the Fertile Crescent used.

Look at this color chart here for inspiration:

I'm digging that bone/purple scheme, very cool. I would add more of that bronze to all of the recessed areas to break things up a bit, but that's just personal preference.

A little something like this, but with more glow:

One paint scheme has really given me inspiration is the one used by Ryogo Yamane. The GW site has had pics of his minis up in past 'what's new' articles. With a little tweaking bone and purple could work well with it, probably just add in some more purple on the larger models or just change the scheme up. I have yet to experiment with it myself though I did settle on using purple too.

I really like the first color scheme the best, especially the picture of the Necrons. The colors are downplayed and subtle; it's nice change of pace to the bold bright colored Space Marines. it does seem like it would be a challenge to paint nicely.

The Tron-esque blck and blue is nice; those particular models have the edges over highlighted though. If you are going to go for that route consider choosing a different dark color; like a really dark blue or violet.

Green Necrons look very "alien," very unique.

Wow, I wish I would have seen the bone scheme before starting to paint mine the old fashioned black green combo.
