after seeing the new ” REALM OF BATTLE ZONE MORTALIS SET" (http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/New_Stuff/REALM-OF-BATTLE-ZONE-MORTALIS-SET.html) i just knew this was the excuse i needed to build a new place to do battle so i made some best guesses and jumped in.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v670/Samadhi/002-13.jpg

I started with about 12 12/12 plates and then cut a large number of 3in wide strips all out of 1/8in plywood. then cut a bunch of 1 3/4in square blocks to space out the walls. The thought being if they all have 2in thick walls spaced 2in away from the side of the 12/12 then they could all match up properly and form mostly 4 in wide walk ways so large critters like a carnefex could walk around and get where they need to go. I am sure in some configurations there will end up being 2in wide spaces but I am ok with that.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v670/Samadhi/003-12.jpg

i started with some simpler shapes but in the next day or 2 i will build the rest then it is on to makeing them not look like they are made of wood ;)

A perfect use for off cuts and "reject" sheets that you get for half price!

honestly the stuff is so cheap it's not even worth worrying about finding cutoffs. I think I paid 10$ for an 8'/10' sheet. but in this case these were made from cutoffs from the last 2 projects I had done. a bar for my wife and a new headboard for our bed complete with built in lighting and book shelves :) I have allot of hobbies....

I've got the plans for doing this as well. I like what you did. I think i am going to make the walls out of 2x4's. That is the only thing i would change. For texture i wanted to plaster the 2x4's make a imprint or something on it to add dimension. I was also going to buy sticky tiles for the bases. Great idea and looks very promising. Oh yea thanks for the idea of a 5th plate.

Huh. Interesting. Have they introduced any rules to go with the new set or is it just plain old terrain?

Those tiles are looking pretty awesome! And a helluva lot cheaper than the FW ones!

after spending some time with my dremel i started working on detail. this is what i have so far but i would love some suggestions

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v670/Samadhi/004-12.jpg

i am thinking about adding some of the details from one of the templates that dwez has made (http://40kaddict.blogspot.com/2011/02/terrain-is-everything-standard-template.html) they are a great example of how to to make some what simple terrain that looks amazing
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v670/Samadhi/005-8.jpg
i also got the removable doors built at least the 4in ones i still need to do the 2in counterparts but i will get to them i want to keep this as flexible as possible so most of the pieces should be removable.
i have some really good scrap for fleshing this project out.

This is a great project! I can't wait to see it competed. If I was to do this, I would want to make a landing zone/bay or maybe a command room something similar to the original Halo when the Master Chief goes and rescues Captain Keyes.

Nice start. And I've think you've given me the impetus to start a 3d space-hulk set!

Did some work on the doors today. I have 3 done and the rest up to the point that they just need rivets. But that will have to happen another day

Looks good just got one question for you, are the bottom pices legos on the doors?

turiya64
03-16-2012, 08:36 PM
no they are actual switches but i guess the little button is about the same size as a bump on a Lego. i thought it looked good as a way to open the door what with the larger button and the 4 small "rivets" .

this is so simple its excellent!

I'm considering making a Zone Mortalis myself for a Big game i plan to run

I've been toying with the idea of building the interior of a bunker - including Earthshaker batteries on "balconies"

the infiltrating units will have to decommission the batteries to stop the barrages on the main board.

You have confirmed my thoughts on how simple it could be to build the wall sections.

great work on the details, i'll be following this

thank you all for the kind words.

today i finished the doors to the point i could prime them

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v670/Samadhi/005-10.jpg

i am happy with where they are and i think they will make a good pallet to test out how the whole thing will be painted.

Looks great. You may want to by or craft little stencils to paint over for text on the walls.

i finished the other 4 doors as far as i plan to take them for now
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v670/Samadhi/001-24.jpg
and hear is all 8 together
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v670/Samadhi/002-16.jpg

zeronyne you are right i really should have found /made stencils i will have to do that before i do the 2in doors for sure thanks for suggesting it

also i should have taped off my hazard stripes before painting them i think i will have to fix them up when i go to paint the plates them selves. as you all can see painting is not my strong suet but if i plan it out a bit better it should still come out looking good.

Looks really good, all I can think of those is it being a sort of cross over between Space Hulk and Frozen Synapse.
It's great to see what can be mage with just a few bits of wood, instead of forking out loads of money for even more plastic stuff.

I actually like this more than the FW tiles, it has more of a gritty space prison feel to it which I approve of. I can totally imagine it being the home of Penal legionaires. I now want to invade it with my Enslavers.

Your not going to have those old key card fetch quests are you? (Red key card for the red door, good old doom)

Man... damn good job on this so far. I cannot wait to see what else you come up with. I have always wanted to make a table like this; something about a full sized Space Hulk campaign always appealed to me.

Hmm... Summer project perhaps...hmmm

I got the very same idea when I saw the FW set. I only have 9 12x12 tiles so far though, with no walls. I was wondering though, did you glue the walls down already or did you leave them off for painting and detailing?

Love the idea, now to just not let this inspiration lead to missing fingers. Look forward to seeing a game playing out on it.

I like it a lot. I was thinking something similar but using foam insulation for the walls.
As far as quick texture, I've used both the spray stone texture as well as using thick acrylic paint (the cheap liquitex artist acrylics) in the past . For spray textures, it's self explanatory (remember you can spray over it with whatever other color you want). For the liquitex, I use a fat stencil brush (The kind with hairs, not the sponge) to stiple it on. It's best for stone texture. Neither approach will win you a GD, but for something quick and simple both work for me. The both also don't have the problem of de-flocking to worry about.

Nice job on the door details. I've found that my local hobby store carries roman numeral stickers that would work well.

Looks good. I've also thought about making one of these two. The best thing about the Zone Mortalis release was the template for different sections from the rules. I can't imagine spending all of that money for the original version from FW.

Nice work, interesting idea for some terrain, reminds me of a random dungeon crawl game.

thank you all.

to answer questions quickly

all the walls are glued down already there is more then enough room to paint and detail them i believe.

insulation would also work just fine just stick to the rules of 2in walls that start 2in from the side and end 4in in from the side and you are all good as far as having them all mate up well.

key fetch quests were allwise a pain so i think we will stick to the FW rules for door use :)

When these seven sections are dry they will be ready for paint finally. Now to get the rest of them trimmed out and add the floor.....
