View Full Version : Supposing that the rumoured paint change happens next month...

Assuming that the rumoured paint change happens next month... which will be potentially annoying as I am just starting up painting a new list and THINK I have enough paint to do it, but maybe not
In the (i think unlikely) event that GW will no longer have avalible the paints I will be using (or very very similar paint with a slightly different names), is there somewhere I would be able to get the following:
Codex Grey
Gretchin Green
Devlin Mud
Defenestratus

From what I've been told, the whole line is being redone - meaning that existing colors will not be "supported" post-change.
I've already stocked up. I've got 20 bottles of each color that I require for my paint scheme for my eldar army - I'm hoping that lasts me quite a while.

i inquired into a GW store recently where I could get the soon to be out of print paints. They stated that there are websites out there (non-GW supported siteS) that have the formulas for mixing the old paint colors from the new equivalents. Does any one know any links to these sites as I do not?

The Coat D'Arms paint range is almost identical colour wise to the GW range, and their paint names are conveniently close enough to the GW names to work out which is which (handy that isn't it...;))
They are also very good paints and come in the old style GW paint pots, which means that they don't dry out like the current GW ones do.
Vallejo game colour are also similar, but the Coat D'Arms range really are almost identical.
The only colour you won't be able to replicate is Devlan Mud, as the GW washes are unique.
I knew the standard colours were going, but didn't realise the washes were, does that go for the foudation paints too?
Bugger, bugger, bugger!! I need to run out and buy loads if that's the case!! :(

I would be very surprised if the washes were replaced considering just how popular they are. Im not worried at all. If they do replace them it will be with something better.

This is rumoured to be an expansion of the paint range, if that is the case I doubt we will see the loss of many paints and certainly not the washes which are phenomenally popular.

From what i know we will have
Foundation
Base
Layer
Wash
So if the current range is being replaced completely it seems they want to have the colours divided by role,
Except thats funny because 'evy metal team use foundation paints as highlights more than foundations in white dwarf really hope they don't change all paints

Um, that's not actually an official article, GW aren't replacing their entire range (I hope) with just red, yellow, blue, white, and black along with a handy reference sheet. This is just someone cleverly playing with colour theory and GW paints.
I would be surprised if foundation and washes get replaced, the recent picture with the supposed new paints actually had a foundation paint there, as of for the rest, they will either keep the name and colour or will have a handy chart to tell us what new colours to use. Still, I might just put off starting to paint my new Necrons till after this happens. I think it will be for the better, the paints will probably be better, and I'm sure they aren't going to change the entire range, especially not the popular core paints.

Don't be silly. Ignoring the fact that GW aren't doing what tht article talks about, and ignoring the fact that GWs liquid green stuff is identical to a vallejo product the fact is GW (and FW before them) should have been offering a liquid putty in their range years earlier. The stuff is great for sealing all those irritating hairline gaps between model bits.

I think some people are getting needlessly worried about this paint issue, maybe the whole range is being redone but I expect most of the colours you use now will still be available just in a different guise. The pigments for the most popular colours will either be the same or so damn close you wont notice.

Of course itīs not official, itīs only a trick from one of the most spanishīs renamed miniature painters of the european Games Days...
Only tried to help everyone with that, but seems some people still want to remain in idiocracy better than into knowledge

I would be absolutely shocked if GW got rid of Codex Gray. I don't think you need to worry, they sometimes seem clueless but there is no way they would anger their entire customer base by getting rid of all paints that match current colors.

Your friend is a fantastic painter, love his work! It equally inspires me and makes me wonder why I am even trying :)
Don't worry, there's a lot of us out here that loves to learn anything and everything we can about painting and modeling. :)

When low on paint many years ago I realised that Dark Angels Green plus Elf flesh makes Snot green and Goblin Green.
Love the article. Especially the 156 parts yellow in Khaki.
My FLGS (not the GW one) has a chart for GW colours to vallejo. Found this; http://www.dakkadakka.com/wiki/en/Paint_Range_Compatibility_Chart
The 'Eavy Metal Team use Vallejo and Tamiya paints (and the old white dwarf team, dunno about the current guys) as shown in old pics of their workstations, and that the Tau were released in a non GW colour (Tau Spet Ochre being released a loooong time later).
Foundation paints and washes are brilliant, for everything else I buy elsewhere because its the same or higher quality, cheaper and has a bigger range of colours.

Looks as if I have another thing to be annoyed with GW about then. It irks me how they're always "improving" things and changes things. As for the paints themselves, I've only used two kinds:
The first being those exceptionally cheap and lousy paints you get a Walmart's crafts section. I used them when I first started out. And due to being poor I am reluctant to shell out the cash for ever increasingly expensive GW products. Nonetheless after seeing some models in person painted with their paint I made the switch.
How is the liquid green stuff? I'm a fan of regular green stuff but have found it difficult to fill gaps with.

Liquid GS is miraculous.
Seriously, get some. It makes gap-filling ridiculously easy.

I doubt they'll scrap the entire range, they'll just get rid of colours that don't get bought a lot and then add some others in. If they do, at least there's the references to see what other company colours you need.

I don't really see the benefit of replacing the curent range (in case that's their idea). Why just not adding new paints? I would be really pissed if I could not upgrade my current armies with the same color scheme.

The only thing that scares me from Citadel is the way that the paint pot seems to diminish: started with .68 fl oz, .62 fl oz and now steady at .4 fl oz. I hope they don't get smaller...

I read this article, and thought it sounded a bit hinky, from my background doing art-type painting.
And in the comments to that article I found another article that conclusively debunks the idea that you can get all the colours that Citadel produces just using red, blue, yellow, black and white. That article is here: http://lascannonslances.blogspot.com.au/2011/11/myth-busted-citadel-colour-mixing.html .
Coincidentally, when painting I do work using just the five "basic" colours, (i.e. red, blue, yellow, black and white) which means you can mix up most colours. Though I will buy another colour to get a specific shade (e.g. bright greens, it's very difficult to mix bright greens).

Actually just heard that the new paint pots will be .003 fl oz, and because GW seem to not now how to open a paint pot, there will actually be no lid on the product, just a bit of dampened paper towel (the nice kind with the flowers).

From everything I've seen, the paint colours themselves won't be changing, just their names, so I'm not worried about not being able to get a colour I used in the past. The addition of more paints to the range can't be too bad, though it would be really, really, really nice if they brought the inks back.

From what I've read about the new paints, aren't they all meant to be kept, just with different names, and a 'conversion' guide will be in White Dwarf?
For the none brits out there, what normally happens with anything big ont he Uk site is the following . Half or zero updates to the site/blog on the friday , and then at roughly midday on saturday they update the site with fridays dates. So possibly this si just an trailer for a sneak peak ?
