So, for a SM: Salamander player, I was wondering what a good core unit is. I do not mean to limit it to, nor exclude, the Thunder Hammer Terminators, or the melta spam tac squad. I am simply curious as to a good, strong, active unit to use as the pendulum for an army.
Happy wargaming y'all! :D

Well, the required two troops are going to be tac squads, so right there you have two units. The question if you are going to play a "salmanders army" is are you going to take Vulkan. Sallie's are a Codex Marine army, and as such will be good simply for that fact.
Thunder hammer termies are good in any army, not just Vulkan's better version.

It's not Salamanders if you fail to take flamers and/or melta type weaponry.

Sternguard with Combi weaponry are a good choice as well. Currently have 1 tooled to deal with hordes with combi and heavy flamers and 1 tooled to deal with high point single model units like Land Raiders, Russ squadrons, etc...

Archetypically, it would be the (often overlooked) Tactical Squad, full 10 man with flamer/melta weapons.

Yep you can have your Salamander army be whatever you like. Fluff wise, Speeders dont come into play much for Salamanders. Games rules wise, 70pt Heavy Flamer/Multi Melta Speeders are perfect with Vulkans special rules.
I personally take 2 tac squads with free flamer/Missile Launcher. Combat Squad them. Give the Sgt a Combi Melta and put his 5 in a Razorback, leaving the ML +4 back for objective holding.
I like running Vulkan + 4 TH/SS terminators and 1 LC Termin in a Land Raider with the Flame Storm Cannons (cause its fiery =) )
An Ironclad with Meltagun/Flamer combo in a Drop Pod can come in handy, and as Mentioned Stern Guard with combi meltas/flamers can lay down some hurting.
Cheers :)

All of this, and especially the bold. And lots of T-hammers. The fluff definitely supports it.

personally for me with my salamanders its all about the fluff! the more melty, flamey, hammery goodness the better. my army only generally includes: bolt pistols, bolters, combi flame/melta, storm bolters, power weapons, thunder hammer storm sheild, flame storm, flamer/heavy and multi/meltas. i have the occasional assualt cannon but thats just because land raider redeemers have to have them lol. if it were up to me id feild (and i have the models to do it lol) a whole army lead by vulkan hestan and chapter master tu'shan with as many termies with thunder hammer/storm sheild as i could fit into 3000pts lol. a mass wall of green 2+ Armour walking towards your line is a worrying thought lol
