So, my brothers bought me a copy of Skyrim even though I didn't like Oblivion, and now I'm hooked. Even though I do stupid things like ride my horse off that really tall mountain with the Greybeards on and spend like 5 minutes bouncing off rocks.

I've noticed a few other people talking about it, so, who else is hooked? I'm only at level 5 at the moment. As I only played Oblivion for a few hours I really have no idea of the worlds backstory but it seems nice enough. I think this is the first open world rpg I've played since Arcanum.

I can give you a rundown on what's happened in the 200 years since Oblivion (Spoilers for the ending of Oblivion):

When Martin Septim sacrificed himself to send Mehrunes Dagon back to Oblivion, the Septim Dynasty died with him. Thus ended the Third Era.

Soon after the start of the Fourth Era, Red Mountain exploded, destroying the province of Vvardenfell in Morrowind.

Black Marsh, the land of the Argonians, secedes from the Empire, followed by Elsweyr home of the Khajiit. The Argonians invaded Southern Morrowind.

Titus Mede is crowned Emperor, by conquest.

The Thalnor, an Altmer group of arrogant, elitist Mer-supremists seize control of the Summerset Isles, their homeland, and rename it Alinor.

Alinor and Valenwood, home of the Bosmer, form a union known as the Aldmeri Dominion, headed by the Thalnor.

Two moons disappered from the night sky, returning two years later with the Thalnor taking the credit. The Khajiit hail the Thalnor as their saviours, and Imperial influence wanes dramatically.

Fifteen years later, Elsweyr is divided into two parts, both client states of the Aldmeri Dominion.

The Aldmeri Dominion declare war on a weakened Empire, which last for four years, with the Dominion victorious. Both sides sign a treaty, the White-Gold Concordat, which gave the Dominon a large portion of Hammerfell and free reign to stamp out Talos worship throughout the Empire.

Hammerfell rejects the terms of the Concordat and are removed from the Empire by Titus II. The Redguard continue their war against the Dominion for 5 years before the elves leave.

Torygg, High King of Skyrim, is assassinated by Ulfric Stormcloak, causing a civil war in Skyrim.

The Dragonborn (you) enters Skyrim, and then the game begins.

I hear marvelous things about it.

I have not tried it yet, as my harddrive is now doing a great impersonation of being a poncy git and BSoD'ing me.

I have to find those damn boot disks somewhere and locate the issue first.

Argh.

DrLove, I would hardly consider it a fair duel if Ulfric Stormcloak killed him with his Voice, as the Whiterun Guards say.

I need to find some magic resistance buffs or something, I can smack apart a sodding dragon but throw in a couple of novice spellcasters and I'm dead faster than you can say 'oh drat, spellcasters'. Also just found out companions can die. Finally killed this wight thing with a couple of spellcasting bodyguard things, barely survived. Searched everyone and stripped them of all their stuff and hought 'wow one of the wights turned into an attractive, dead female in her underwear, what an amusing bug. Hey she looks like Lydia... *gasp*'. I ended up reloading that because the only other female companion I've found is ugly as sin.

EG, if you're on PC you can use the command console to set her to unkillable (it's what I did). Lydia seems to have a few bugs with her in that she doesn't level with you properly and the tag for her to be marryable is b0rked. Again, fixable on PC.

I'm currently playing the 'super brutal heavy metal challenge' - namely kill everything big (bosses, dragons, giants etc) in hand to hand, no magic or bows, and using only axes. It's rather fun :D

Edit: Also having fun with the perk that lets you decapitate people.

Ther decapitate perk ameliorates one of the problems I have with the game, namely that the combat is really tame. I mean you smack some poor sod into the ground with a two handed axe and he doesn't have a mark on him? Not right. I'm hoping they mod that soon, at least lopping off a head is an improvement. I

I love this game!!, just made myself some swanky dwarf armour with rather rapid magika regen. But have realised that i am probably to weak to do the last mage colleague mission.

Skyrim, now teaching children about bullying. (http://youtu.be/e55P2XF38O0)

Does anybody else just get swamped with dragons all the time? I've killed in the area of 15 of them, and sometimes get them coming at me two at a time... at least I've got plenty of souls stocked up for when I find some more thu'ums.

I wouldn't say swamped, I think I've killed six or seven an I'm level 14. I just got sent to prison for accidentally murdering a party of travellers, need to work on my lockpicking so I can escape next time.

What mods are people using, out of interest? I have Smooth Females, No More Block Faces and Glowing Ore Veins. I'm waiting for some good clothing and armour package redesigns too, there are a few out but I want to wait for the big compilation mods that usually come. The clothing is really quiteunnatractive often.

I love the player housing element, I've spent ages filling bookshelves and whatnot. I only have the house in Whiterun at present but I'm going to buy more soon.

Well the 18 I've killed now have gotten me to level 16 - so it does seem unusually high. But now I've exited and coming back into the game it seems to have settled down nicely.

I love the usable furniture, but I need more bookshelves! Also a wierd bug was that when I went out sans Lydia and came back home to her, she'd be in her underwear. Not that I'm complaining mind...

Also, in celebration of head chopping:

I buy another house when I run out of bookshelves.;) I have a bug that sometimes when you decapitate someone their head falls down straight through their body. Getting a lot of graphics glitches and quite a few random crashes to desktop as well.:(

Has anybody played both the ps3 and pc versions, and which is better.

I do generally go down the pc route but i'd need a new one as not up to spec....
Is losing the mod scene worth it?

Shield Charge is pretty much the best perk ever. (http://tubedubber.com/#-kgRsVWWuQA:JcNhDstL4-k:0:100:0:0:1)

The head thing seems to be that when you decapitate someone their head actually vanishes, and then a 'head' sprite is placed on the neck, but drops as the body tumbles back, so partially falls through the corpse. I've spent far too much time studying it, but I loves me some murder-make.

I've not had any crashes or glitches, which is rather impressive as I generally have Fraps and Firefox both still running while I play. But I'm not modding it, so that could be contributing.

As for PC vs Xbox/PS3, I'd go PC as you can use the command console to debug broken quests / glitches and mess around with skills and perks if you can't be bothered grinding.

I was getting crashes and glitches before I installed some mods so I don't think it is that.:( Some are really bad, at one point it took me half an hour to leave Riften stable area because it crashed all the time, I had to swift travel away quickly before it would crash to stop it happening. Now it just crashes an innoportune moments like moments before discovering a travel location I've spent ages walking too. F5ing a lot.

I like the skills system. I have a hybrid thief/fighter. Locking picking and a little stealth with heavy armour, two handed weapons and smithing. One problem I'm having is selling stuff, the stores only seem to have like 700-1000 gold and I have to do round trips of the realm to sell off all my stuff after going to a dungeon.

My idiot brothers put a nude patch on my Skyrim, gave me a hell of a shock looting some poor dead girl and getting a face full of nether regions. Anyone know how to remove stuff like this, I don't think they backed up the texture files.:(

Best glitch ever, I was speaking to a Dragon and midway through the conversation he flies straight up like 500m in the air and starts circling overhead for the whole conversation.

Has anyone been hit by the markarth glitch? its by far the most annoying thing ever!

eldargal
11-26-2011, 06:57 AM
Which glitch is that?

Yay, just hit 100 smithing. It became a lot easier when I realised you get the same exp for an iron dagger as you did for a high end object.

That is a rather silly glitch in smithing but im not complaining, if you complete the forswarn conspiracy and the break from jail quest you end up being unable to return to markarth without the guards trying to attack you and you cannot choose to go to jail.

I got into the Diablo 3 beta literally the day after I bought Skyrim... I haven't been reading or posting in the Lounge of Lost Souls much as a result.

But I'm loving both. Plus Minecraft. Plus Arkham City. Ugh, I need to quit my job so I can play more video games.
