Cool or simply lame?

I don't particularly like the plasma gun (might look better horizontal) but the heat warp effect of the melta gun is quite good.

I can't look at the melta guns the same, someone pointed out they look like they're wearing condoms.

Most of your models are basic blocks of colour. Thats a good basis for some dipping, which will give them instant shading and will make them look much better, for almost no effort whatsoever.

What did you use for the symbols on the rhino? Forgeworld or home made?

Sandrat
12-02-2011, 02:26 AM
So, I have some serious questions for you -

What are you using to base coat your figures and vehicles? I've found I get better depth of color base coating with black, not white.

Secondly, I saw a couple of pieces that look like they had some mold lines on them - are you planning on going back and cleaning those up?

gendoikari87
12-02-2011, 06:51 AM
I used a white base coat. I tried black but it was horribly dark. So i tried the white and I think it came out real nice. the pics are a lot lighter than IRL though (IRL they look blood red, in the pics they look pink.). and no, i'm too lazy to deal with the mold lins on stuff that's already painted.

As for the symbols on the rhino, there is a post on BOLS with all the sheet I printed it off cut them out and "glued" them to the models with water effects.

Sandrat
12-02-2011, 07:06 AM
Reasonable answer. Looking at a couple of the shots it looks like you're not getting full coverage when you base coat. As for the pics being lighter than the actual figures, are you shooting with the flash or with your work lights?

gendoikari87
12-02-2011, 07:11 AM
Flash.

Sandrat
12-02-2011, 07:26 AM
That's probably part of the issue with the color being washed out.

gendoikari87
12-02-2011, 07:37 AM
well I take the pictures at night and I don't have a lot of good lighting. I'll see if I can get some more pictures today with natural light.

Sandrat

Even just moving them under the light you use to paint by will probably help.

I pretty much paint in the dark.

Deadlift

I pretty much paint in the dark.

get yourself a desk lamp, or something to provide better lighting. You have no chance at improving in your painting until you do.
Whilst I like your conversions the painting is a little scruffy with some areas not fully covered and others where your reds and silvers overlap in the wrong places. I don't say this to be harsh but to give you some constructive criticism. And if your painting in poor lighting then thats your problem.
Im not the best painter myself but its always good to push yourself and take time in any mini you do. A tidy paint job no matter how basic will improve these 100% and do your conversions more justice.

My advice for your silver and red basic models is this

GET SOME LIGHT :)

Base coat in black and make sure its an even and not to thick a coat. Less is more and wont clog the details

thin coats of chainmail over the whole model and let dry 100 % then wash with badab black.

go over any areas which you want to with other colours (like your reds), ie cloaks and some armour plates etc and let dry 100% then wash these coloured areas with sephia or a wash of your choice. Dont wash over any of the chainmail areas.

Thin coats of paint and nice clean brushes go a long way to improving your painting. He is an example of my table top quality army painted very similar to how I describe above.

http://i719.photobucket.com/albums/ww200/joeygoldcoast/Knights%20of%20Blood/IMG_0006.jpg

Its basic but its clean and tidy and its easy to take it a bit further like this

http://i844.photobucket.com/albums/ab3/joenortonjones/IMG_0003-3.jpg

Im no great painter but I strongly believe that with the right tools and keeping your models clean and tidy then slowly but surely we can all improve.

Please don't take this as an assault of your efforts, its not but just my way of helping a fellow painter with new ideas. I had the same help (and still do) from a better painter than myself and am very grateful for it.

but please do yourself a favour and stop painting in the dark :) and good luck with your army.

Do you prime your models? You really should, an dif you are using pewter models you should wash them with soap and water before you prime them. There can be a residue left on them from th emodeling proicess.
