Hey all,

Yesterday I bought the Necron codex despite I don’t play Necrons, I do however collect codexes in the odd chance I decide to start an army up I can build a list up first before buying any models (also I like reading the fluff).

When I came to the Doom and Night Scythe entries, I not only liked the rules but also the look of them. But since there isn’t a model yet I’ve decided i’m going to scratch build one.

So first thing I did was go through the entire book, to gather all the decent shots of the flyers that can help in getting the look right on as many angles as possible (front, rear, top, bottom, sides etc). after that I went after shots of the Tesla Destructors as these are on both units, this was easier as there is already a model with the weapon (Annihilation Barge) but I will be scratch building these as well to that they are the right size for the ship.

So far I’ve got the silhouette down without any of details jutting out (attachments below)

The diameter of the scythe is 6.69 inches (or 17cm) with the inside circle being 4.1 inches (or 10.5cm), and compared to the oval flyer/big monster base it seems to be the right size.

I’m now working on templates for the centre part of the ship (pilot area and engine) and the inner part of the wings that will be sandwiched between wings of the current template.

Updates may be slow but I hope to get it done by Christmas.

go check out the BFG minis for Necron. This appears to be very much like the scythe class cruiser (without the tail) or teh escort ships. Might be useful

Update:

Hey all,

I’ve begun construction of the Scythe starting with the bottom side of flyer. In addition I went and bought some transparent plastic rod from my local model shop for the base (only 50p) and glued it through the base (like a traditional flying base). I also finished the template for the middle section of the wings and transferred it to some foam board (0.5cm thick) and have glued it to the bottom part of the wing.

Currently I’m wondering if I should cut out the who crescent for the upper side of the wings of cut off the wing sections of the cockpit area of the scythe is left bare with only the foam board.

I’ve decided to keep hold of the templates and see if I can make some digital copies so other may use the templates, with any mistakes rectified.

Very nice start. I can't imagine they will wait too long to put out the model. That would be a gold mine for gamesworkshop considering how much better they are than the stupid ghost ark. Keep up the progress!

idk, it just seems that they keep putting out fliers in second waves, its a little odd but hey whatever works for them.

i like the basis for the miniature so far, but will you be putting plasticard over the foamboard to make it look more like a mini, or will it just be the foamboard itself as the basis?

i'll answer that with an update. :D

i spent last night working on building the framework of the wing curve on the top and bottom of the scythe. on the top i decided to keep the area of with the pilot and engine blank as the top of the flyer will be built on top of the wings' curves. overall the wings will come to a thickness of 0.7 inches (1.8cm). the curves will be made out of milliput and then sanded down, the necrontyr symbols and icongraphy will be engraved with my mini rotary kit.

as for the foamboard, this will be covered up with green stuff between the wings as i need to sculpt vents and panels as seen in the art work. once the wings are done is on to the cockpit and engine. the guns will be last.

also i've decided that i will mold and cast more of these so that i can give one to a friend for Christmas. i'll probably won't be selling these as i don't want to contest with GW's eventual kit,

it appears that i underestimated the amount of milliput i would need. i used an entire box of milliput just to the one side of the wings (excluding the tips and pilot area), from my estimates i may need another three boxes to finish it off. in addition the milliput has now made the Scythe too heavy for it's stand, so casting is now necessary.

but otherwise, its coming along well. i'll finished the milliput work before sanding and then engraving it, then i'll be able to move on to the cockpit.

I love how it is coming along so far, absolutely love it, though i would have tried to put thin plasticard to do those arches on the wings. Either way, this is looking amazing and a really great conversion so far.

thanks for the comments. :)

Bought four more packs of milliput today and just finished the top side of the wings, tried to get the best angle to show the thickness of the wings. now down to three. :D

also i've been working on a new Necron character from the new Lore - Valgûl the fallen lord of the Bone Kingdom of Drazak.

for those not in the know of the new lore; Valgûl is a necron overlord who rules over the planet Drazak which is inhabited by flayed ones. of course this puts him at an extreme risk of catching the flayer virus, however it is not known wether of not he has contracted it and evolved in him or if he is somehow immune as he retains his sanity.

finished the top of the wings (except a few places that haven't merged well, will touch up later), did check to see if i could do the bottom side as well but was unable to without squashing the other side. after finishing both sides (including the touch ups) i'll sand it down and then re draw where all the engravings were and then begin the engraving. after that i'll add the detail between the wing curves with greenstuff.

then it will be on to the cockpit.

What material are you using to sculpt the bulk of it? It looks a lot like Paperclay but its hard to tell.
That is what I am using for mine. Its amazing material but I hate how long it takes to dry, particularly for thick pieces.

I'm using milliput: standard (they have like four types) for £2.25 at my local hobby shop. i find it good for big sculpts, base work and large amounts of gap filling. fine detail however not so good (unless you get the Milliput: fine).
