Hey dude, I've used some of the gale force nine stuff before, I got it through maelstrom. You could also try www.antenocitisworkshop.com, they've got heaps of cool stuff. Best of luck mate!

The friend who got me into scratch building in plasticard worked for a vinyl graphics sign place. They order it all the time, so if I go in and ask them to order an extra sheet or three for me I can usually pay for it when I pick it up. Worse case scenario for them if I don't pick it up... they use it.

Craft shops in the UK aren't generally the best bet. Can't remember if they have ModeZone up in your end of the world, but their larger stores here in the south usually have a variety of textures, although at prices that can make GW look like a budget hobby... Otherwise, dedicated model railway and model and/or remote control boat/aircraft shops* tend to be your best bet. HobbyStore tend to have the cheapest stuff, but their supply can be a little... hit and miss. Sometimes they have every texture imaginable, othertimes they only have one thickness of plain.
Most of the smaller hobbyshops may not actually stock plasticard, but will have contacts and suppliers, so you may have to ask about it. Unlike craft shops, they almost certainly will understand what you are talking about and will often be able to order in what you want at no extra cost (and if you end up regularly buying stuff, they may end up stocking it anyway!)
*By dedicated model railway and boat/aircraft shops, I mean those that only sell those products, rather than toystores that have a big section of that kind of stuff. Quite a few toy shops do sell a wide variety of model kits, but because they are staffed by people who aren't necessarilly hobbiests, there knowledge beyond their immediate range is usually very limited.
p.s. if you do find any good, reliable supplier, do let me know. The ones down here are often sketchy at best, and keep going out of business... Not quite sure shy soton has quite so many model railway shops anyway!

Using advanced Google-fu I found a UK distributor for Evergreen (http://www.evergreenscalemodels.com/). It's at http://www.jperkinsdistribution.co.uk/ (http://www.jperkinsdistribution.co.uk/)-maybe they can help find a retailer nearer to you.
Try searching for a plastic distributor in your area that sells to individuals (rather than business only) and ask for high impact polystyrene. My local distributor IIRC has sheet .020" up to .125" (.5 - 6mm) and cuts to size within reason for free.
In the US I can get a 4' x 8' sheet of .060" (1.5mm) for about $25.
In comparison a single sheet of Evergreen brand .060 6" x 12" has a suggested price of $3.49 and four sheets 12" x 24" is $37.20
