I was having a chat with the guys i play 40k with and we were trying to think of an idea thats completely different and new for my necron army ( as they are still unpainted ). One of the guys said that theres no such thing now as an "original " idea. Now i have faith in peoples imagination specialy us 40k players, and that made me wonder has anyone had or seen any really original ideas?

I was thinking of making them look like emerald green stone, black with darker to lighter green marbling, then accented with gold, and then do the weapons in my own colours

When I came onto this thread there was a Battlestar Galactica advert above the post. This amuses me. :p

Well, when I get my Orkses, 'nids, and IG done, Necrons are next on my list - my plan is to make the rustiest, dirtiest, most ancient looking Necrons out there.

Technically, your friend is right.

All ideas are derived from our experiences - it's virtually impossible to come up with something no one has done before, especially when you consider how long as a species/civilization we've been around.

That's not to say that you can't create things that aren't original or unique, however, by combining things you've seen before in now and/or exciting ways. It's very possible to create something interesting without it being derivative. You don't have to do something groundbreaking to be 'original' - anyone who haggles you otherwise is being kind of a douche. :P

What exactly are you hoping to achieve that's completely 'different'?

i was mainly trying to see if i could think of a twist to the necrons that fits in with the fluff but is unique ( plus i wanna show my mate that you can come up with something different be it small idea or full blown story lol :D )

You could make a bodyguard for the silent king painting them all gold in referance to the fact that he is the Necron Emperor and has his own version of the Custodes. Bling them up.

Quality > Originality. Do something well and it doesn't matter if it has been done before

Originality is perfectly possible these days, it just takes a little more work that's all.

My 5th necron army will be Tribal/shamanistic :

lots of techno-voodoo and shamanistic stuff. So a tribal styled overlord, shaman cryptek, blood of their victims used as warpaint, skeletal jewelery from their victims.

Brilliant, that properly made me want to try that out.

I painted mine iridescent green (like some beetles I've seen) to represent their living metal skin. For examples, see >>here<< (http://www.lounge.belloflostsouls.net/photopost/showfull.php?photo=1954) and >>here<< (http://www.lounge.belloflostsouls.net/photopost/showfull.php?photo=1950).

I've also toyed with the notion of a Chaos Necron army. The literature is replete with examples of inanimate objects being warped by Chaos, and while people will argue that the Necrontyr had a level of psychic immunity, the Necrons are soulless robots. Individually, they are as corruptible as any possessed vehicle in any Chaos Marine army.

If the new Codex provides a means for fielding Flayed Ones as a troop choice, I will be making me some corrupted Necrons. Mmmm ... All that lovely, lovely corrupted flesh.

I once converted a chaos-necron of Malal for a bit of fun using spare bitz, terrible picture but :

This is from a post on the "It's so Fluffy..." article.

I suggested there to someone who wanted to use Lizardmen w/o using a Space Marine codex to use the new Necron codex since there seems to be a big emphasis on them wanting to find flesh bodies. Original? I think so, but could be wrong.

I'm assuming that you want to use the actual Necron models, though. My advice would be to wait until the new codex hits, read it, then see where your creativity takes you.

Also, to clarify, are you looking for a unique paint scheme, a unique army build, or what? While I disagree with your friend about originality in the 40k universe, they are correct by definition since you are using what someone else has created and putting your own spin on it.

Again, wait for the new codex to hit. Should give you some pretty good ideas.

I LOVE the wooden idea. Awesome! :D

You do realize that as soon as someone mentions a concept on this site, it's no longer completely original...

Wooden Necrons is an awesome idea.

Howabout Squat Necrons? Or Wraithbone Necrons (i.e. made up in Eldar coloring and style)?

And that Malalecron looks very impressive.

i highly agree. i know that most of the time when you come up with an idea it will have bits and pieces from things you've read, watched or done.

i am waiting on the new codex before i start my painting etc

yeah the wooden necron idea is brilliant :D

This can't be an original idea, but I have sometimes wondered if anyone has ever gone back to some of the early Necron inspiration from the first Terminator movie. You could use mix Catachans and Necrons with bits of metal limbs and whatnot sticking out of messy wounds on the jungle fighters' bodies. Kinda like Arnie looks towards the end of the movie.

-Somebody has to have done that right?
