Avatars of War (http://www.avatars-of-war.com/) are a company that has become well known for their quality, heroic scale fantasy character models (and recently plastic troop kit). They are generally of similar quality and price (though leaning towards costing more) to Games Workshops characters and tend to fit with their aesthetic better, being heroic scale as well.

Some personal favourites:

High Elf Mage:

Dark Elf Queen:

Lizardman hero, sculpted by my friend and BoLS Lounger Build:

Plastic Dwarf Berserker kit:

In my experiene you can't go wrong with AoW, the figures fit in with the GW aesthetic, are of high quality and are cast well.

A couple more favourites:

Minotaur Lord, some of my brothers are particularly fond of this one:

Dwarf Noble, suitably craggy:

The AoW Dark Elf sorceress and Vampiress are also very popular for their respective armies, though the Elf is certainly NSFW.

Please add your own experiences with AoW to this thread.:)

I should point out that down here in Australia, AoW is cheaper than GW is, same in NZ. So I suspect it depends on where you're sitting as to which is cheaper - buyers should always check their local markets before making such a decision!

Are those dwarves the plastic kit you mentioned? Because they're pretty damn awesome!

Yep, those are the ones. I believe they are working on more plastic kits too, rumours suggest witch elves but they are playing it very close to their chest so who knows.:)

I use those Berserkers for Slayers and they are by far amazing for the cost. AOW did have a promotional thing where if you pre-ordered the box you got special commander bits, that aren't in the regular box. I look forward to seeing them doing the same for other infantry boxes.:)

I too am eagerly awaiting what plastic troops they do next. Really hoping for plastic Witch Elves.:) In my opinion AoW Dwarfs are the only real competition GW has for quality fantastic plastic.

The next in their series of Apocalypse themed figures has been revealed:

Looks suitably hideous! :p

According to Felix on their forums they intend on doing regiments for all 4 Apocalypse legions and Apoc Dwarves too, the next of which is already sculpted, but they've had to push them back as they are already behind on getting the existing Warriors of Apocalypse: War boxes made. They've ordered another resin casting machine and will be hiring more staff to meet the demand, but the machine has got to be built and delivered and such.
