View Full Version : Eldargals List of Alternative Fantasy Miniature Companies

eldargal
10-09-2011, 03:06 AM
As I've written a couple of little recommendations of companies that produce various fantasy models suitable for use in WFB, I thought I'd make a post to compile them all (and add more). Feel free to post recommendations (or PM me if you prefer) but try and post opinions of specific companies in the relevent topic.

The forum topics are where I discuss my opinions of the models and post some pictures, not exactly a review, just my impressions.

For the record, not that anyone has brought it up, I receive absolutely no incentive for including any company on the list nor giving a positive review. Most if not all are in complete ignorance of the fact I'm doing it as far as I know. These are all companies I like, have experience with and/or have had recommended.

In each forum topic I only post a sampling of picture, please don't judge the entire range by that, visit the websites!

All companies will produce 28mm scale figures compatible with WFB, though there may be some slight differences in scale such as smaller heads and hands due to them not following GWs 'heroic' scaling. The difference is not usually that noticeable on the tabletop but be aware of it.

Thanks for this Edargal, its really useful to know who else is out there. As a general question, how well do you find these models fit with their equivalent GW conterparts? I get they are the same scale and they obviously have similar appearance, but are they correctly proportioned or do they look a bit out of place, like Gorkamorka orks would in a 40k Ork army, if that makes sense.

eldargal
10-09-2011, 06:17 AM
It varies, Avatars of War is heroic scale as well so they fit in well, Reaper varies between heroic and regular 28mm scale but you really don't tell. As to Mantic, well, some mix better than others. The undead are fine but the dwarves and Elves are really too aesthetically different (and damned ugly in my opinion) to mix well. I've been told the Mantic Orcs mix decently thogh I've not seen it in person.

Red Box miniatures are finer, with smaller heads and hands, not at all heroic scale. But for female sculpts (which they do superbly) this heightens their femininity. For male sculpts, well, they can't all be ridiculously butch.:) It isn't a problem in my opinion, the sculpts are so beautiful you can forgive it if they have small hands.

As to Titan-Forge I've not bought from them yet so I couldn't say, and Ultraforge do big things so it doesn't matter.:)

Generally I will try and post things whch I do believe are compatible with WFB, so no 54mm/30mm/20mm scale figures etc. unless they are sold in addition to suitable 28mm scale stuff. Actually I'll put a disclaimer to that effect in the first post.

Don't forget about Maxmini, at maxmini.eu

You'll have to do some sorting to find the fantasy bits you want, but they do have some great heads, wings and beasts for use in fantasy.

10-09-2011, 08:12 AM
I'm not sure I will add maxmini as they are primarily a bits manufacturer and I want to keep this list for whole model purveyors.:) I'm not even sure about adding Scibor despite their whole figure range.

You could always divide the producers up by: 'Full Models', 'Conversion Bits' and 'Terrain and Structures'

And, well, it's the wrong scale (30mm), but Hell Dorado makes mini's that would be great for Chaos (any chaos monsterous infantry, champions/lords, important daemons [haralds, princes, etc.]).

I mean, tell me this wouldn't be a great Chaos Lord

Fair point, I'll do that then.

Over the next week or so I'll create some threads for Mantic, Reaper, AoW etc. then start expanding the list. I don't to spam WFB General so I'll do it at a fairly relaxed pace.:)

Dark Sword minatures has some good stuff, too, though it's mostly minis for playing Dungeons and Dragons. This female Paladin (http://www.darkswordminiatures.com/mainwebsite_html/gallery/V_7404_femalepaladin.htm) is one of the most literally beautiful models I've ever seen, especially with the paintjob they show.

Yes, Dark Sword is excellent. Both Dark Sword and Reaper employ the legends in miniature making - artists like Julie Guthrie (Reaper) and Tom Meier (Dark Sword). Julie used to sculpt for Grenadier, while Tom was a founding partner of Ral Partha. They are the best in the industry.

Julie Guthrie is excellent. I use two of her hydras in my Dark Elf army as while I like the GW one I like variety and hers are nice.

Aragorn Marks works for GW now (http://www.warseer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=319151).

Really looking forward to what he does with WFB stuff, he is such a talented sculptor.

Also, Maxmini and Scibor forum topic up. They share a topic and I will ad other primarily bits companies to it as well (unless they have an exceptionally large fantasy bits section, Scibor and Maxmini aremuch more scifi), simply to keep this thread primarily for whole models.

Don't forget Raging Heroes & BaneBeasts/ BaneLegions.

They're mostly for larger model stand ins, but I think you'd have trouble finding a better Chimera out there than the Raging Heroes one.

eldargal
10-18-2011, 07:48 AM
I haven't forgotten them.:) Banebeasts/Legions will probably go up next, then either Gamezone Miniatures or Raging Heroes.

Wondering if I should add Warhammer Forge to the list, they are a part of GW but it is still an alternative to the GW range...

Dark Sword Miniatures added. Dwarf Tales next, then I think I'm out of recommendations (edit: oops, no Hell Dorado after Dwarf Tales then I'm out) and those with which I have personal experience so if you have any companies I should check out please let me know. The criteria is that their range is predominately suitable for WFB OR that their fantasy line is suitably impressive despite it being secondary to their scifi range.

I'm still not sure about adding Warhammer Forge or not, while it is part of GW it isn't stocked in their stores and the design studios are completely seperate. Opinions?

Can we add the Chapterhouse Lizard men to this list?

No doubt she'll correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the purpose of this thread is for companies rather than individual models. Since your Lizards are the only fantasy model they sell, I'm not sure CH would qualify.

Wildey is correct, sorry altbob. If CHS starts producing more Fantasy stuff I'll happily include them on the list with your lizards in pride of place.:)

Having recently feeling the need to find alternate mini's, I've found this list very helpful, so thank you :)

I also offer the following two companies:

Tale of War (http://www.taleofwar.com/shop/category.php?id_category=1) (I particulary like Valeria the Vampire in their Glamour Series)

Carnevale Miniatures (http://www.vesper-on.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=81%3Acarnevaleminis&catid=7%3Aminiaturas2&Itemid=14&lang=en)

Some nice stuff from Tale of War, I quite like the Dryads.

I suggested Carnevale a while back, but EG either didn't notice or didn't care. :(

Noticed and forgot.:p I'm easily distracted. Actually for some reason I thought I had already added them.

Tale of War added.

I don't think I will add Carnevale, their miniatures have a very strong 18th century aesthetic which doesn't really work with any of the WVB armies in my opinion.

I felt there were some good Chaos candidates and some great Tilean mercs, but hey it's your list.

I just found another potential candidate in Imbrian Arts (http://imbrianarts.com/)

There stuff seems pretty much Kickstarter focussed at the minute but you can still pick up stuff from El Greco (http://www.elgrecominiatures.co.uk/contents/en-uk/d282_Imbrian_Arts.html) who also stock a number of the ranges from your list. They seem to be reasonably priced too.

Hi Eldergal,

If you haven't already, you might check out Anvil Industry. They don't have much, (being mostly sci-fi/40K) but they do have Crowmantian Cultists and the Fallen Dwarves. Both of which could fit Fantasy, especially with the new AoS aesthetic (in the Stormcast Eternals anyway). I've used them before for some 40k conversions and found the staff very nice and helpful and the models are fantastic in my opinion.
