The parts used in this conversion?

the rings look like parts to the central shaft of a space marine Drop Pod. It is quite possible the wires are just clipped pieces from the same such drop pods.

If it wasn't for the fact they look the same colour as the plastic, I'd say the wires are Bass guitar strings.

The rings between the two balls look like old Chimera wheels to me....

I think the round bits could be from the old chimera kit. There were three wheel sizes that the treads wrapped around. If you want good looking cables, I second the use of guitar strings. If you want to stay with plastic you can find some plastic tow cables from the IG tank accessory sprue. Just cut the rings off and insert where you want.

Since you've already helped me me with this bit, what decking/pannel do you think this is from, its quite big when you see the full model (http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/content/blogPost.jsp?aId=7300001a) (the second picture)

Not sure but the battle wagon floor may be the underside of a bastion roof.

The gun mount looks like it's from either the Bastion or the defense line.

Yeah, it is the bastion flooring, thanks! :D

Anyone want to hazard a guess as to how that thing was build? (i.e. the base of the model underneath all of the other stuff, I spot a battlewagon base, but not much else...)

I can't see how thick it is, possibly it's normal paper, or very thin plasti card
