I hope so. there was a pilot for a WW series a while ago and everyone praised the actress but the script was completely messed up, apparently there was a lot of behind the scenes interference.

to DCs credit their animated stuff is really good. Finally remembered to watch Superman Unbound recently and really enjoyed it. Supergirl is awesome. As is Lois Lane.

Edit: Ok just saw that Greg Rucka is writing the show, that makes it all kinds of awesome and gives me faith it might be good if DC get their ****ing **** together and let the people who know how to make television make television. No stupid bat embargo preventing them from using major villains and the like if the plot calls for it.

Fantastic article and well worth the read.

Beyond Batman, Green Arrow (the Mike Grell era and Kevin Smith era) and Hellblazer, DC never did much for me.

^Feminism. Go Valkyrie.

One of the problems with DC is they seem to focus on the character too much and not the story. So instead of thinking 'how can we tell a compelling story with this character and develop said character' they think 'this is how the character is, let's make them do stuff they would do'. As the writers they hire are very talented they try to do the story telling thing, but editorial ****s with them. So Batman doesn't get married because he can't be happy. Because being a masked ****ing vigilante in love and married and terrified every ****ing waking moment that one of your incredibly long list of enemies will find out her connection to you would totes be happy? Batwoman doesn't marry because she can't be happy either, because being a work obsessed, arrogant control freak vigilante married to a work obsessed police officer is totes a recipe for rainbows and kittens. Meanwhile Wonder Woman, sent to the world of men to learn more about humanity has to shack up with an alien because only her vagina is strong enough contain his mighty phallus.

That's my theory anyway.

Read this this morning. And I see several good points.
I also raise a simple point, any objection to this relationship eventually forming over time. after all, Lois (and any mortal WW takes as a husband) is going to die LONG before their super counterparts. And TBH over their prolonged lifespans the only people they'll be able to connect to will be other super beings.
That said DC has taken a post-vegas buffet sized dump on Lois Lane over the last few years so it's a double double.
Oh and neither I or the wife liked Amy Adams as Lois, she was meh at best.

Deadlift
09-30-2013, 11:01 AM
Spider-Man 3 wasn't just a car crash for Venom, it was so god awful that it was decided to reboot the series instead of make more.

Venoms really quite complex, not really a villain or a hero. Venom just "is" and it really depends who it's bonded with and the symbiote relationship it creates. But don't let spider man 3 put you off. If you can try and read some of the comics where he is a good guy and bonded with Flash Thompson or better still as one of the (dark) Avengers, it could return your faith in the big tongued dude.

Insert_nickname_here
09-30-2013, 11:15 AM
Yeah, that was lazy typing of me. I always liked the idea that the symbiote's relationship with spiderman was a bit like a spurned lover, to it's alien mindset it was making him more efficient, and it's more efficient to kill an enemy than let them live and possibly return, yet despite all this spiderman rejected it.

I drifted out of the Marvel U at about the secret invasion time, but just got a load of comics for my birthday, so I've decided to catch up and see where the universe is.

Although I haven't purchased anything regularly in years, id say (depending on market fluctuation) a few thousand dollars. I have a ton of older Batman books, and started XMen in the '80's.

I know guys on the team are very keen to have female representation in games generally, and that goes for me as well, but I think this is about what resonates most with fans. You work out what resonates best.
Trans: We don't actually give a **** and we want to continue making male power fantasies while ignoring all the integral female Batverse characters as much as possible.

The question I find myself asking is "which armorer thought that would offer any kind of protection against anything?"

eldargal
10-09-2013, 06:40 AM
Well it's more barbarian clothing than armour, the idea being she is so good she doesn't need armour. Never really cared for it, but the fact she has a brilliant female writer now makes me feel the characters owns her look rather than it simply being about eye candy. I really recommend the series.

Kaptain Badrukk
10-09-2013, 06:47 AM
I don't care how good you are with it, I've handled combat ready swords and you do not do it without clothing on!
I'm not sure how having a female writer dress her like that makes it any different than a male writer doing so as long as the character and their development is treated the same.
Personally this kind of image of "barbarians", which goes for men too, makes no sense. You're nomadic and warrior based. You'd have a buttload of furs and pelts on, and anything you could nick off dead enemies. Granted female armor wasn't exactly commonplace, but still.
So i guess my gripe isn't conservative, it's historical.

Nabterayl
10-09-2013, 07:36 AM
I don't care how good you are with it, I've handled combat ready swords and you do not do it without clothing on!
I'm pretty sure that EG's done a fair amount of fencing with sharps. And I mean ... you kind of do do it without clothing on, or at least we do nowadays (or train to, at least). As my teacher likes to put it, we're all naked by medieval standards. A serious sword fight in modern street clothes is pretty darn close to naked. A lot of the incidental lacerations that come from not-quite-perfect technique wouldn't even draw blood in medieval clothes.

I hear you on the historicity. But I think there's something to be said for "I feel like the character owns her look because her writer is so good."

eldargal
10-09-2013, 07:37 AM
Oh it makes no sense at all I agree, it's just a bit less offensive now in my opinion.:) It may not make sense but she owns it, and her skill justifies it not being armour in her setting. From a realistic perspective its bollocks.

If you're really good* you can fight with sharps in regular clothing, a jacket or dress won't do much more than bare skin. In terms of armour, yes, you'd want full plate ideally but in a magical, high fantasy setting where plot armour is de rigeur you can get away with it.

*I mean really good, I wouldn't do it with anyone but my brothers if I wanted everyone to survive unharmed. In a hypothetical situation with me and a sword in a day dress versus a bunch of less skilled opponents I could kill I would be a ****ing blender.:p

Deadlift
10-09-2013, 07:46 AM
The question I find myself asking is "which armorer thought that would offer any kind of protection against anything?"

The same pretend armorer, from the same pretend setting as the fictional character Red Sonja. Historical accuracy not found here :D

Still a kind of cool heroine, but still no Conan.

Kaptain Badrukk
10-09-2013, 07:46 AM
In street clothes fine, but in a bikini!
She's an agile fighter, so a leather jack, boots and a light chain or scale shirt would be enough. Plus some trousers to prevent thigh chaffing.
It's extra weight and will do bugger all against an arrow or a mace, but against a cutting edge it's the difference between laid up in bed for a long recovery territory and missing intestings / arm territory.
But again, it's a comic book. And given that you'd have to be trained from childhood, and fight every day, to fight two skilled swordsmen at once let alone do the kind of crazy-*** stuff she does maybe I should stop being annoyed.

I just bought Mars Attacks: Attack from Space on Comixology, thought I'd check it out. You can get the TPB as part of the Kickstarter but the digital version is half the price. It's pretty good, not a single female character in it though and the male characters seem copied form the Village People (well there is a cowboy and an indian, plus a magician and a US senator so not quite...). Worth the seven pounds or whatever it was for digital, I wouldn't pay more than that.

Ahh if you want Mars Attacks comics I'd actually skip the current series by IDW and go for the older collected editions of the Topp's comics run. The 3rd volume is pretty rubbish (Mars Attacks Baseball Special???) but volumes 1 & 2 which cover the initial invasion, how it is stopped and the fragile ceasefire period afterwards are pretty good.

Yeah I saw on CBR that Fearless Defenders had been cancelled. Not at all surprised about Katana ending though, the couple issues I flicked through in my local comics shop didn't impress me at all and the other JLA supporting title which launched with it (Vibe) is ending at the same time too.

Had my copy of the Superbia vol #2 TPB arrive in the post today and read it cover to cover in about an hour and my friend then did the same. Really good and it continues the story nicely from where vol #1 (which was originally published as a mini series) left off. This contains issues #1-6 of the ongoing series (which sadly will be ending with issue #12 so there will at least be a vol #3 next year to complete the story) and I would say it is actually better than the first book and I'm already looking forward to the next book. Still very much a Justice League/Desperate Housewives mix up it is really good fun and I can't recommend it highly enough.

You know what I would like to see?
A lead super heroine that isn't just nuts hard, but the hardest character...

I mean, take superman. So hard he's a dull character, especially given his numerous resurrections.

Now, take that archetype, barring any iteration that's just 'Superman.........WITH TITS!!! But an all powerful character, who despite their obvious talents find it near impossible to find the same adulation as her male contemporaries , and eventually goes on the rampage against the patriarchy, like the absolute worst nightmare feminist. A feminist that literally cannot be stopped.

That I would deeply enjoy!

I also bought Mars Attacks Classics vol 2 last night, it was decent enough. Then I made the mistake of buying volume 3 and it was utterly ridiculous and not in a good way. Not impressed. They did introduce a new female character which was nice, gave her a ridiculous pair of breast mortars which was not nice and then killed her and her team off in the most stupid way possible, even by Mars Attacks somewhat ridiculous standards. If you feel like reading Mars Attacks, stop at Classics volume 2.

Black Bolt vs Thanos:

Now this is a fight that I always wanted to see. For years we never see the full power of Black Bolts scream. In war of kings he defeated Vulcan who was curb stumping everyone even Gladiator. If Black Bolt can handle an Omega Level mutant who could handle a toned down Phoenix and a being that can defeat Gladiator/ Superman it says a lot for Black Bolt.

Keeping in mind he whispers a lot and a lot of his powers are just ignored over his scream attack. In my opinion I think Black Bolt scream has been toned down and lost the effect it has. People freaked out when Black Bolt talks since it can take out a neighborhood. A scream was likened into possibly taking out a planet in some story lines. However when he has screamed we get a almost dead Vulcan and a blown up flying city, again no very impressive compared to other heroes shaking the whole planet who black bolt has defeated in the past by using his scream.

However the main issue with Black Bolt and Gladiator too is they as strong as the plot allows. For example unless Jean Grey is around Gladiator should be able to mop the floor with most of the X-Men teams. However they always most of the time sqeak out a win. Best Gladiator showing to me is when he fought Eric Masterson Thor who was getting his butt kicked till he had living lightning hit Gladiator in the back and than while Gladiator was dazed went beserk on him and threw him in a portal. Keep in mind Thor was a newbie at the time and someone else had his powers. It was funny since Thor after being brief on who Gladiator was didn't want to fight him and wanted someone from the other else to fight him. The others simply said grow a pair and fight him since you're basically a God.

Anyway the fight takes place in Infinity. Since I am a Thanos fan I am pro Thanos in this event. However I noticed Marvel have chaged the character again after his second resurrection. The orignial character was cool, but what drew me to him was the infinity quest, the gauntlet and his showings after the gauntlet. Never liked the infinity war or crusade, but I liked the character development of Thanos so I bought them along with infinity watch and another comic which featered him as well. After the ending of infinity watch his character had poor showings, especially in that limited Avengers book when he had a child with death.

Anyway annilation and the Thanos books leading up into it I really liked the character. Basically he was the ultimate evil. After being an ultimate being like twice or three times or actually 4 times, hard to keep count how many times he wins, but subconsciously screw up and let everyone defeat him when he does win. He figured he woukd sit on the side lines. Several times he has been a Neutral party which I found liking this Thanos. He attempts at one point into being a good guy like when he saved the universe again by dropping a nuclear tipped planet on top of Galaticus and destroying two planets at the same time. Anyway his character seemed to go to being developed with him not embracing death which made the character better since when he got the gauntlet and death turned on him he never really liked her since. However as a form of a child he accepts her, which makes it worst. Which Death killed him a second time so he can be with her, Drax couldn't kill Thanos as shown in Thanos Immperitive when Thanos kills Drax again, lost how many times Drax has died.

Now this Thanos from Infinity reminds me of the older Thanos who relied on minions and his pirates. However even then he was more hands on. My issue with the series is where he gets this army and his own super powered team from. If it was Sanctuary and a bunch of pirates like normal I wouldn't mind. Let's not talk about the Thanos Rising story line that basically re wrote his back story. I do admit that it does show he is capable of being a neutral or even a force of good with Death not pulling his strings.

With this story I am hoping for a better showing than his last one with the Zodiak and the cubes. I haven't read the story, but seen the panels where everyone hit him once. This is the same guy who in the past have taken down the Avenger s without the aid of the gems or godlike device, although teleportation, force fields, and other technologies like frozen Thor is fair game.

Not going to go into the Thanos son crap.

Anyway Thanos which I can fairly say I know what he can do and against Black Bolt which I only seen about 20 percent or even lower of his showings makes it hard to determine how this fight should go.

I cheated and seen a you tube video of the fight and was pissed off. Not saying Thanos should had not obviouly won, and at least Black Bolt did hurt him. I was disappointed that Black Bolt put up a poor showing. He did get to scream 3 times though. However Black Bolt can fly. Basically we get Thanos shrugging off Black Bolts attacks. Now in WW hulk Skull BB at least had a better showing. This showing would be like Rick Jones vs the Hulk and Rick Jones had a gun that can injure the Hulk and the Hulk is somewhat letting himself get attacked and still holding a conversation with him. Not saying this is not a typical Thanos showing, but it shows how beyond Black Bolt Thanos is.

If you think BB should had done better let me know. Anyway I also had a problem with everyone knew that fight was gonna happen and the Illuminati just didn't help Black Bolt vs Thanos. What got me is that with Black Bolt gone you don't have anyone left on earth that can be effective against Thanos anymore. Unless the other Avengers come back.

So, going back to a subject from a few weeks ago (hope it was here and not n the Feminism topic) about the Marvel Cinematic Universe Wave 2 lineup, we are getting Antman which seemed an odd choice, to me. We were told it was because Avengers 2 had Ultron as the antagonist and Antman created him. BUT now apparently Ultron will be created by Tony Stark and Antman won't even be in the film at all. So why are we getting another scientist superhero character if Tony Stark is interchangeable instead of something that hasn't been done yet like a female lead superhero. Seriously. Not only that but it turns out Wasp won't even be a hero in Antman but might foreshadow her turning into a hero.

So what the ****, Marvel? You give Hank Pimm a film to lead into Avengers 2 a he created the antagonist, you then have Stark create the antagonist and we continue to get an Antman film for Reasons? Then his equally important wife-superheroine character gets demoted to love interest not superhero. Are you TRYING to actively piss off the female fanbase or something? Look at the Avengers. Founders: Iron Man, Ant Man and Wasp. Iron Man gets his own film. Ant Man gets his own film. Wasp gets to be the ****ing love interest and not even a superhero. **** you. That is not acceptable. Female characters are more than just ****ing love interests. If you won't give one of the Avengers founders equal billing, at least let her be a hero in her ****ing husbands film.

#rantends.

Not to mention the success of various female led films in the past year or so and the under-performing of some big male led blockbusters. The idea that female lead films are tricky is archaic and purely a sexist invention of Hollywood. Really fed up with it. The rumours about Janet van Dyne are even worse in a way because it continues to trend of viewing female superheroines as just accessories to the male ones. If Iron Man and Ant Man get their own films Wasp should get one too. Or the Ant Man film should be double billed as Wasp and Ant Man. The fact is now that Ultron is being created by Tony Stark there is absolutely no reason why Ant Man should be getting such preferential treatment over the female Avengers founder.

Well the killed of Janet during Secret wars anyway, thought that was dumb, especially when skull Pym wasn't hitting her like Dr. Pym. I was hoping the two get back together and he stopped hitting her while Tony stopped drinking.

Anyway I agree the Janet is getting a poor treatment. I liked her in the Avengers Cartoon show which she was Hulks first friend. For some reason Skull Invasion make horrible stories.

I personally thought Janet and Pym should at least had a cameo in the Avengers. I can see Tonk Stark building Ultron. They did the same with the next avengers movie where Ultron ruled everything. It is more believable that Stark made Ultron over Pym. The problem is Pym focus on using pym particles, insects, etc. You never see Pym dabble in robotics an AI really, something that makes more sense from Tony Stark.

Also in the Third Iron Man Ultron was kinda in it. The suit attacked Pepper while Tony and Pepper was in bed together. Tony than blows up all his suits, guess no multiple suit attack against the avengers. Tony seems to be retired from being a hero at the end of three. Which leads into maybe he build an AI replacement. Which would make more sense with the Foreshadowing scene in Iron Man 3 since he never lost control of his suits in 3 and is a hint of the future in the next Avengers movie

Also it gives people more reason to hate Tony. Marvel hate Tony for a lot of things.
Shooting Hulk in Space
Getting people killed during Civil War
Green Goblin getting Iron Man suit
Hating Iron man cause he is Iron Man

I think getting possessed by Ultron and turning Stark in a female version that looks like Janet was a good punishment, the virus another, and making him Forrest Gump another. Maybe Stark is Ultron again lol, but looks like Janet. Favorite Ultron ever.

Zatanna is dc.

For female I would say red she hulk would be cool since the hulk and betty is already out there. They can skil jones and ross as hulks please. A different actress for Storm and her own movie with forge as a love interest would be cool. Instead of sticking her with token black men like bishol and black panther.

I think Enchantress would be awsome to introduce.

Make lady sif thors love interest.

The girl with the cybernetic arm from hero's for hire would be cool.

I would love to see a Psyloke movie. Turn her asian and steal her eyes. Make her into Lary Mandarin who was cooler than Electra.

Although I am happy that Gamora is hitting the big screen which I thought would never happen. She looks better in that green body suit.

Zatanna could work though, supernatural stuff is big right now and she could bridge the Batverse and the more supernatural elements of the DC universe quite nicely.

She Hulk would be nice.

Comics Captain Marvel is being added to the Guardians of the Galaxy comic team which some people are taking as an indication that Marvel are raising her profile further in anticipation of her getting a film, hope that is true. Being able to have her cameo in both Avengers and GotG films might help her own film.

I'd kill for a Sif film especially if they flesh out her character more like she is in the comics.

That's right.

Tony was sober when he fought Jim Rhodes and clearly was sober in the iron man suit at the party
He was clearly sober when he blew off the guy that made aim
He was sober when the guy from the first movie said he made a wonderful speech.

Hmm he clearly was never under the influence through out 3 movies, well 5. I admit he wasn't a raging alcoholic, but Disney could had the oppurtunity to do the damon in the bottle story line. In all his movies it really doesn't address he has a problem.

However they really don't go into him having a problem. Its like hey you drink to much, well I gave my speach and saved the day what is the problem. Than his drinking is ignored and forgotten. They kinda make him drinking to be a kin to being cool with no consquence behind it. With issues like drinking and driving I don't see why not.

Tony's problem shoukd be addressed. However if he creates Ultron it does present an opportunity for them to address the issue.

Well if they do main stream ant man than he just happened to hit his wife a few times and not really abusive. In the ultimate version he is abusive, soooo depending on which one they do. I would say it is an opportunity to address the issue and I don't know. Teach us something whike entertaining us at the same time.

For those familiar with The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes…this is the head writer for the show. At the Rose City Comic Con, he called Aria over to his table and asked if I would take a photo of the two of them together on his phone. He told Aria that he wrote the show and that Wasp was his favorite…before Hulk, Iron Man, or even Thor. Aria stood wide-eyed, half-smiling at him. The next morning she asked to watch the cartoon and said, “Momma, I want to write to Christopher Yost. I want to send him a letter. He said that Wasp was his FAVORITE.” She was all smiles. You know...thinking about it....in every X-Men film to date, the women have been rubbish, with the exception of Mystique.

Storm - Pointless. Utterly pointless. No plot relating to her.

Rogue - Really? Really really? Ultimate X-Person bad *** reduced to a whimpering child? I appreciate the characters have to start somewhere, but really really really? She normally has to restrain herself from giving out too much of a whooping, rather than having her awesome power used in really lame, unimaginiative way. No flight, no super strength....lame!

Magneto's wenches weren't any better.

Mystique carried the lady flag entirely on her own. Poor show!

I would have been happier with Moira MacTaggert if the script hadn't called for her to take her clothes off in her very first scene. Not that the actress isn't attractive, but it kind of cheapens things when that's the first thing you see the character do.

And Emma Frost was barely a character. She was just another stooge of Sebastian Shaw who got zero development of her own.

So, Brian Wood, author of the current all female X-Men comic and proclaimed feminist has been accused of sexually harassing a number of young female creatives over the years (http://gwillowwilson.com/post/66992106551/sex-gender-and-the-comics-industry). Worth nothing that he accepts hitting on one of them in a slightly sleazy fashion but doesn't respond to other claims he acted obnoxiously. Several women and some men have come forward with stories about him.

It's really upsetting as the X-Men comic is excellent and he responded to the claims of 'reverse sexism' with some excellent tweets ridiculing the notion. But while he may not have done anything illegal this behaviour is still an example of the boys club culture that marginalises and alienates women trying to break into a male dominated industry.

That's a good cover for She-Hulk! My pull list atm is:

Superman Unchained
Superman/Wonder Woman
Forever Evil

I also pick up the following in trade paperback format whenever they come out:

Grace Randolph's Supurbia
GI Joe
GI Joe: Special Missions
GI Joe: Cobra

I don't bother with the Larry Hama written GI Joe series though which has long since disappeared up its own arse. The new continuity that IDW created when they took over the franchise a few years back is far superior, largely due to Cobra actually being written as a ruthless terrorist organisation, rather than for laughs.

A good friend of mine (who has way more disposable income than me) gets the following titles which I get to read too:

Justice League
Justice League Dark
Justice League of America
Batman
Detective Comics
Batgirl
Nightwing
Red Hood and the Outlaws
Catwoman
Swamp Thing
Animal Man
Green Lantern
Green Lantern Corps
Green Lantern: New Guardians
Red Lanterns
Wonder Woman
Aquaman

Wow the porn costume is almost exactly her New 52 outfit (only things missing seem to be the collar and the sword strap around one thigh, and the sword of course though she can make that vanish into her bracelets now thanks to an upgrade to them from Hephaestus) and miles better that the bright and sparkly one from the pilot, seriously leggings do not work on Wonder Woman nor does she have any need of them. Plus the woman playing her actually looks intimidating and a warrior in the porn pic.

Never read Animal Man (only posting it 'cos Brakkart reads his friends copy:p) but I did start reading B:TDK back when I started with the New 52 and found it to be rather meh and stopped buying it.

In other news, DC Collectibles are releasing a Poison Ivy cover girl statue next year and I'm going to get it. Her breasts are a bit over the top but it's still more elegant and less revolting than most of the PIvy stuff currently on the market...

Actually Animal Man has been cancelled by his writer, not DC who wanted to continue the title. The writer though is moving to a Justice League title in which Animal Man will be featuring and wanted to continue his story in a team setting as that was the logical next step for him to move towards apparently. As for Dark Knight, it won't be missed and is basically being cancelled to make way for the forthcoming weekly series Batman Eternal. The New 52 run of the title is mostly notable for the first appearances of a new and intriguing villainess with a fetish for getting chased (and leading Batman into lots of trouble) namely the White Rabbit, who I'm sure was designed as a bet to see if anyone would actually show up to a convention cosplaying her:

A writer cancelling their title is actually quite common and the publisher usually tends to go along with it in order to keep the writer happy and working for them rather than going to write for someone else. they might well soon after launch a new title with the same character, but it won't be the same title. All a bit silly really, but that's the comic book industry for you.

As for White Rabbit I kinda like the character, she has potential and has a pretty neat power in that she can split into 2 seperate people, one of whom is her White Rabbit guise, the other is a duplicate of her actual identity, a half-indian socialite named Jaina Hudson, who looks nothing like White Rabbit at all as seen here as they merge back together:

http://media.tumblr.com/tumblr_mcmy0gonFD1rqtw48.jpg

The name of this particular superpower is Biological Fission and tends to be used in comics as a character having the ability to make multiple identical copies of themself, probably the best known such character being Multiple Man of the X-Men. It's a neat twist that she can create a totally different looking (and personality) character from herself when she splits, and as yet we don't know if she can only create just the White Rabbit persona or others as well.

IT HAPPENED TO ME: I WAS SEXUALLY HARASSED ONSTAGE AT A COMIC CONVENTION PANEL. (http://www.xojane.com/it-happened-to-me/marinaomi-harassed-comics-panel)

At the moderator’s request, I describe my comic about the first time I was attracted to a woman. It happened when I was nineteen, as I watched a co-worker eat a mango. Not knowing what to do with all my new feelings, I ran home and ate a bunch of mangoes. It was a sexual awakening, but I consider the story innocent.

[He] interjects loudly, vying for the attention I haven’t been giving him.

Hey Gott, that 1st story was rather sad to read. I'm surprised though at the husband. I'm not talking about big man protecting little women, but as spouses I've always felt your supposed to look out for one another. What I do know is if my partner was being humiliated in public I couldn't just sit and watch. Luckily I wouldn't have to as Colleens a rather formidable women.
This writers experience is nasty reading, made even more so when her Husband is introduced to this prick and he does and says nothing. I'm not saying he had to get physical, but letting him know he'd overstepped and still being polite wasn't impossible.

Yup, welcome to the world of the wonderful non apology, where however vile someones treatment of women is we should forget about it because it was just a failed attempt at humour. I'll give him some credit though, he outed himself and apologised rather than trying to hide from it. But not accepting responsibility or acknowledging that his behaviour was completely unacceptable rather outweighs it.

Gal Gadot talks about Wonder Woman (http://comics-x-aminer.com/2013/12/26/gal-gadot-finally-talks-about-wonder-woman/) for the first time.

It’s been said that you’re too skinny for the part. Wonder Woman is large-breasted, is that going to change?

Hmm. I represent the Wonder Women of the new world. Breasts… anyone can buy for 9,000 shekels and everything is fine. By the way, Wonder Woman is amazonian, and historically accurate amazonian women actually had only one breast. So, if I’d really go “by the book”…it’d be problematic.

So you’re not going to gain a little weight and start eating carbs before filming begins?

It’s the physical preparations that I’m starting now. A very serious training regime – Kung Fu, kickboxing, swords, jujutsu, Brazilian…1,000 and 1 things…I’ll gain body mass.
I think she has the right idea, quite hopeful.

Thought the slicing off of a knocker was a proven myth?

And I still suspect this new film is going to suck mightily. Man of Steel was bobbins, and how can you drop in WW without a preceding film to give her proper back story?

Plus, Ben Affleck. Urgh.

Quick thought about why women all seem to be a certain shape in comics....

Is it simply easier to draw them consistently from a sort of 'stock' body type?

eldargal
01-03-2014, 03:18 AM
Some artists do use stock pictures for reference a lot, one artist in particular whose name I forget (something Land? Arkhan...hur) is notorious for using pornstars and stuff for references. But the variety in male body types and even faces is much more significant and there are more of them so I can't see it as being a big factor.

Mr Mystery
01-03-2014, 03:21 AM
I'm not seeing so much variety in the blokes, though to be fair I do mainly read just Marvel stuff.

Tends to be the 'chest heavy' style, depending on skin tone, hair colour and style to really differentiate.

Though I guess my observation doesn't work that well when you take into account the obvious joy of drawing great big wobbly norks, compared to a flat chested lass.

I’ve always hated that mentality when it comes to comic books. Why? Because it tells me that the person reading the comic has no idea what the **** they’re talking about. They’re so stuck in their own little bubble, they haven’t even realized that the very first comic books were pretty much all about making political statements.
Superman and Captain America were “superhuman” individuals, created by Jewish men during World War II. Captain America was literally created by a super soldier serum, and all around the “perfect” human in the eyes of the ****s. And what was he doing? Killing ****s.
The X-Men was created during the civil rights era, and their struggle was supposed to represent the struggle of PoC, women, and GSRM.
Comic books were born out of political statements. So if you sit there and say, “they shouldn’t make political statements,” all that tells me is that you don’t agree with the political statement, and therefore you feel uncomfortable.
And if you think that a Muslim female superhero is a “political statement,” ask yourself, “why? Why is it a political statement?” Ask yourself why our society is structured in a way that a Muslim superhero, whether the Green Lantern or Ms. Marvel, is a big deal.

I mean, there were folkloric heroes like Robin Hood before the Scarlet Pimpernel, but they didn’t really do the secret identity — people might not have known Robin Hood’s real identity but he wasn’t out living a double life and his costume was just what he and his buds wore in the forest, whereas the Pimpernel was actually doing the exact same thing as Bruce Wayne (pampered aristocrat by day, avenging hero by night)

also I wanna point out that the Scarlet Pimpernel was actually the leader of a league of twenty people also living double lives — Baroness Orczy also invented the first superhero team

Plus, I'm fairly certain there were quite a few a Greek heroes who disguised themselves. Sorry, but I'm not sure we can claim the Pimpernel as the first superhero.

It's very much a comic that looks at the superhero doing day to day things (lawyering in this case) without so much action but that's the point really. It's a really refreshing take and features a fantastic female lead who is charming and super smart as well as badass.

Agreed. She-Hulk has been an interesting read so far. Personally, I'm not a fan of the interior art, but I'd buy the issues solely for the cover art even if the actual comic was garbage (which it certainly isn't).

Lex Luthor, Joker, Cheetah, Captain Cold, Solomon Grundy, Poison Ivy, and the last one is sort of ambiguous. It could be Riddler, could be Toyman, or it could be someone completely different. I take the frame where it refers to him as a prankster to mean the Riddler as Toyman takes himself far too seriously to be called a prankster.

Totally agree, brilliant series. Both of the Red Sonja comics (at least I think there's only 2 titles, might be more) that Dynamite are putting out are great reads.

I'm gutted that IDW seem to have ended their own continuity of GI Joe comics. Ever since they took over the license they've had a title written by Larry Hama that picked up where Marvel's old series left off (which was also written by Hama) as well as 2-3 titles that were set in an entirely new and much better continuity of their own creating, where Cobra actually was written as a competent and ruthless terrorist army/organisation, unlike the horribly cartoony and bumbling group that Hama writes them as. And they seem to have stopped those titles entirely now.

Very happy with the Superman/Wonder Woman title that I'm getting, which is very well written and is doing a great job of showing why these two are perfect together. I'm hoping that Geoff Johns statement that their relationship will end badly is him messing with fans, because frankly they go together so much better than Superman & Lois Lane ever did.

I second (or maybe that's third...ed?) the Red Sonja books. Red Sonja is the better in my opinion but Legends of Red Sonja is good fantasy too. She only has two books currently but had a couple of mini-series last year.

A couple of other good reads with prominent female leads...

Midas Touch (http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page=preview&id=19490) - An interesting sci-fi story with bits of mythology in it. The story centers around a small group of rebels (really, it's 3 people) fighting against a vast authoritarian federation by discovering midas (who had turned the entire earth to gold by his touch) and weaponizing it to use against the federation. One of my favorite new books (along with Umbral).

Rocket Girl (http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page=preview&id=17888) - An interesting book focusing on a teenage cop from the future who is trying to right a wrong done in the past that causes the future to become controlled by a shadowy mega-corporation. Art by Amy Reeder.

Saga (http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page=user_review&id=4535)- Easily one of the best comics out there right now. Focuses on a family fleeing from persecution because the mom and dad are from opposite sides of a galaxy spanning war. Told from the point of view of the daughter who starts off as a newly born infant. Also, illustrated by the remarkable Fiona Staples.

Umbral (http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page=user_review&id=6649)- Centers around a young female rogue and her coming to terms with the powers of a gemstone she holds and her role in fighting an incursion by the shadowy Umbral

Never fear erm... me of the past, IDW just announced at Wondercon that their own GI Joe continuity will return in September, though they didn't give out any more details on how it will be back. Also they are going to do a GI Joe vs Transformers mini series too because apparently the 7+ times that's been done before by other companies that held the licenses just weren't good enough...

... and every time G.I. Joe and Transformers has combined they have been shoved together mindlessly and every time it happens in the future the same thing will happen... because the two HAVE NOTHING IN COMMON. It's like teaming up Neil Gaiman's Sandman with The Punisher. Or the recent laughable attempt to mix Masters of the Universe with the DC Universe.

I dunno, I quite liked Devil's Due's first 6 part GI Joe vs Transformers series which had Cobra finding the Ark and reactivating/enslaving the Autobots and Decepticons they found there and GI Joe as a unit being formed to combat this new threat. The 3 follow on series weren't anywhere near as good, though one of them does feature a few pages of pure Dinobot awesomeness which utterly rock. If you've not seen it, the Dinobots basically get teleported directly into Shockwave's command centre on Cybertron to the alarm of every Decepticon in the room who all take a step back as Grimlock looks around, grins and just says "Mmmmm Decepticons..." what follows is a few pages of a very one sided fight as the Dinobots tear the place (and most everyone in it) apart.

The other attempts though have been truly terrible, especially Marvel's ham-fisted efforts back during the 80's/90's when they had the licenses for both properties. I have to agree on the Masters of the Universe vs DC series though, that was just awful and I love DC and Masters of the Universe.

Trying to find space in my budget at the moment to add Batman Eternal to my comic pull list. It's a weekly title that DC started 4 weeks back. I've read issues 1-4 thus far in my FLGS and I'm hooked. It will run for 48 issues apparently, through to February next year when it (and both of the other weekly titles DC is launching) will all conclude at the same time... on the 30th anniversary of the Crisis on Infinite Earths, so there's bound to be something epic happening then. Apparently Batman Eternal will continue after whatever happens then, after a short hiatus. It's being written by a team of writers, overseen by current main Batman scribe Scott Snyder and both the writing and art have been excellent so far, plus it's brought back Stephanie Brown, one of the characters missing since the start of the New 52 era. I highly recommend checking it out.
