i was paging throught the tomb king army book and some aspect seem cool but they seem like they have weak core troops. i have read and watched a few battle reports on you tube and they never seem to win? what is the general consensus on them and if they are a good army to field?

Speaking of their basic abilities, yes, they are relatively weak. It is their special rules that make a Tomb Kings army. You have to remember that even though a single skeleton doesn't do much, there are going to be a lot of them, and they are unbreakable and cause fear.

I'd say the single difficulty in a Tomb Kings army is that they are the most magic-dependent of all the armies, and that makes them unpredictable, especially given the likelihood of miscasts in the current edition. There are a number of magic items you can take to mitigate this danger, though.

Overall, I'd say that you shouldn't really pay that much attention to online battle reports. You are getting your information not from the best players of the army, but the ones that happen to have video cameras and a propensity for posting things on the internet.

Warhammer is relatively balanced, the only armies that are really in bad shape these days are the oldest books that might not have as many ways to deal with the quantity of monsters and monstrous infantry and cavalry that has been appearing in the newer books, but that is due to the ago of their books.

The key is that some armies are more difficult to manage than others during a game, in terms of difficulty. Some armies are very straight-forward and forgiving, such as Dwarfs and Chaos Warriors. Other armies require more complex strategy and careful maneuvering like Tomb Kings and Wood Elves. But as far as being good or bad to field? Not really an answerable question. The question is whether or not they fit the style you wish to play the game.

how much does the unsteady rule affect the army?

You mean unstable? That depends on how much you lose combat by. Your troops won't run away, but as already pointed out, they are fairly weak in combat and as such you are liekly to suffer a number of casulties. So you need to try to make sure you get some flank charges and have big ranked up blocks to reduce combat resolution. It won't be a major issue on your large blocks of infantry as they can take any losses from the unstable rule. What you can't do is send your smaller elite units in unsupported as they will die quickly due to the unstable rule.

Hey Tunnelldo,

Personally don't care for tomb kings; I definitely researched them while looking to start up this hobby; they are very forgiving in painting schemes and are rather brillant to look at (if you like undead things). Unfortunately the more I read into them the more I didn't like the constant fear of having to keep protecting your Heraphant. Because when that dies, your army turns to dust, literally. That was my biggest turn off to the army. The army is very wealthy in terms of magic, however they are extremely magic dependant. I really like their monstrous units, those giant living statues are stellar!

In all honesty though, if I wanted to start an undead army I would definitely look into vampire counts over the Tomb Kings, mainly because for me; my first interest peaked in the skellies because of the movie "Army of Darkness" And the Vampire Counts seem to fit that role a sminge better.

Also something else that threw me off (completely irrelavent). They are a nuetral army alongside the Ogre Kingdoms. I don't understand how they are a nuetral army when they want nothing more than to wipe the hammerverse of all sentient life because of their betrayal of Nagash. /Shrug

Don't be desueded by me; these are just my thoughts and I'm unfortunately not much more help outside of this.
