I have just been trying to pick a 1500pt list from 7500pts of IG (its hard when you love all your models :D)

but while doing this I thought of a cool (i think :D) challange...

Using any codex and using models and prices availble from the GW website (including battle-force boxes)... what is the cheapest way to produce a FOC-legal army?

If it is 'competative' thats a bonus... and to make it more begineer focused I think the only condition is no conversions at all

Probably a Grey Knights Paladin army.

Draigo (275pts) - £14.50

10 Paladins, 4 psycannons, banner, psybolt (675pts) - £28 x 2 = £56

5 Terminators, psycannon (225pts) - £28

psyrifle dread x2 (135pts x2) - £28 x 2 = £56

That leaves you 55pts. So you can master craft some Paladin weapons for wound allocation, or take an =I= with grenades if you drop the psybolt on the paladin squad.

That will set you back £155 assuming you have all the paints, brushes and glues. You should be able to pick up enough autocannons off ebay to convert all your dreads for £10-20 depending on your luck, and your inquisitor can be a converted marine (couple quid max) or a blister from GW for £8.

So assuming £17 for 8 autocannons and you buy an =I= from GW and £20 for the codex, you are looking at £200 for a reasonably capable army. Not too bad.

I'd go Black Reach Box Sets, and a land raider, and two attack bikes

With two kits, you'd have

HQ:
Captian, Bolter, Hellfire Rounds, Relic Blade (140)
Captian, Bolter, Hellfire Rounds, Relic Blade (140)

Elites
10 Man Terminator Squad (Need 1 Powerfist Bit, and if you wish, 2 heavy weapon bits) 400
Dreadnaught with Multi-Melta/DCCW ---105
Dreadnaught with Multi-Melta/DCCW --105

Troops:
Tactical Squad 170
Tactical Squad 170

Fast Attack
Attack Bike w Multi-melta 50
Attack Bike w Multi-melta 50

Heavy Support
Land Raider Redeemer 220

So
Black reach x2 $200
LR Redeemer $66
Attack Bike x2 $50

That would give you a full army at $316 plus a bit, and you could use some of the orks you'd have left over to trade/sell to pay for some of that cost. Might not be the cheapest option, but a functional one.You could even make it a themed list by dropping one of the captains and one attack bike and adding Vulkan.

you should sit down with your army list and do a points to price comparison.

That's it. Make a spreadsheet. If you write the algorithm right, it should produce the cheapest army possible.

I go wiith Craigslist here, not sure if you have it in your area or not. I got a 1500+ point Necrons Army for $75 from a college kid. I got a 1500ish point Eldar army for $90 from another. Lots of 2000-3000pt armies for sale for $150-$300.

With a name like SneakyBen, I'd figure stealing one would be your first option... :D

Blood Angels. 6 boxes of marines (5 Tactical and one Combat squad), 4 power fists to2 squads, 27 models each and Astorath. In the current prices, it all comes to $232 EXACTLY and fills up 1500 points (again, EXACTLY).

The best part? 55 Space Marines is not only cheap to acquire second hand, but it actually is a good force with the right mix of equipment when you are playing the game more seriously.
