I've been painfully slow at getting anything painted. So slow that I bought these before the new Grey Knight codex came out with the intent of using them as Inquisition storm troopers, only finished them last month...

Working on Grey Knights at the moment, forgot how much I hate painting power armour...

and the test grey knight, not sure about the electrical attempt on the halberd, it's my first try and doesn't look 'glowy' enough...

my word, those imperial guards look insane! The weather on the armour is a really nice touch, as are the scorch marks on the flamera. Really excellent detail.

However, in contrast, the grey knight armour looks a little flat, possibly highlight? I dont know if its complete so. And a really thin ice blue with a touch of purple line before the white might help the glow :)

But really nice so far!

By estimate, it's taken since September to paint these dudes, in the interim I had to decorate and welcome my daughter to the world. Lessons I have learned - 1 DON'T ASSEMBLE AND PIN THE MINI BEFORE PAINTING, BE PATIENT. and 2 DON'T BASE THEM EITHER...

These are the first four of about 15 mishmashed metal and plastic Gk Termies, the metal ones have been propped up with extra height on their bases but I like to think its not too obvious and deals with the issue of them being slightly smaller than their plastic cousins...

Comments helpful and welcomed...

Sweet models! How did you do the power swords on the Terminators? Air Brush?

Thanx, I just used a knackered brush, and blended from regal blue to white (and ice blue imbetween). The brush's bristles are all over the shot, so the effect is more natural I think.

I'm actually in the same boat as you. Like exactly the same! I bought a bunch of the same Kasrkin models to use with the old daemon hunters codex and about 20 old GK and 5 TDA GKs. This was like 3 years ago and I have never finished them. So then the new codex and models came out and I bought even more and got a bunch for my b-day from co-workers (they make fun of me but also support me too) and now when I go to paint them in the traditional silver I find that I hate it and I'm bored. I was actually thinking of doing the same kind of paint scheme that you did for GKs!! But I have to asked, what is a "knackered brush" ?

'Knackered' in that context means old, broken, past its best.

Or maybe it was just tired.

Im not sure if its just the lighting in the pics or the type of varnish/sealant you used but the models have a really interesting softness (for lack of a better term) that make the highlights/base colors blend nicely.

If you post a panting walk through I will find a heretic and roast them!

I agree. The flatness of the grey on those termies is really appealing. I am going with the opposite approach by starting with a chrome metallic spray paint. Sadly, it's similarly frustrating and monotonous to paint.

Awesome work, why grey and not chrome or black?

Thank for all the comments, I went with grey because I always think that too much bright metallic tends to detract from the detail on the minis, especially the older metal GKs. Black would have been cool, but I wanted a 'stone' sort of look.

They were under coated in adeptus grey (the dark foundation one), washed with devlan mud and highlight with dheneb stone through to white where needed. I drybrushed the bases through d.stone, and white. Wanted the base and mini to tie in and look natural, so using d.stone in both. Gonna do Stern next.

I think I like the Stormtroopers the best...but then again I'm biased since I plan on creating a GK army without any Grey Knights!

It's hard to ever find time to paint with a job, wife and 5 month old who deservedly get all of my time. I have just finished this old metal Stern. The skull on his chest 'I' symbol was a bit flattened as I got it second hand off of eBay. I have propped him up on his base so he doesn't look quite so short in comparison to the other Termies in the army, a mix of old (metals) and new (plastics) all height adjusted where applicable.

Afraid the eagle on his shield looks like a blackbird and the writing above looks like a smear.

Arco's started now, will finish in six months time...

I've always liked the GW Arco models, never seen them painted to a decent standard (not even the 'Eavy Metal ones). Thought I'd give it a go, like how they turned out, though should maybe have put an extra highlight on the machine parts.

The reason one of them is black is because I like the idea of my IG / Inquisiton mini's being Helghast (from Killzone) therefore any penitents could be drawn from their prisoners of war, and Rico who was a good guy in the game was black, and also really, really annoying. Therefore, the black Arco represents him. Hope he likes his new look.

Comments are welcome, I only paint, I don't play so no one ever see's these mini's when they're done. Except my wife, who couldn't care less!
