View Full Version : Why I am not looking forward to a new Necron Codex

Let me preface by stating I do NOT want this thread to devolve into yet another Matt Ward hate thread. I think it goes without saying that any fluff he touches is ridiculous and an affront to the lore. That being said, I want to discuss how proposed/rumored changes to the Necron will, quite frankly in my opinion ruin them, and appears to be nothing more than blatant GW marketing. Allow me to explain.

1) We’ll Be Back! and Survivability
While the ability to seemingly always roll this is nice, it was rarely an issue with the old Codex. If you were caught in melee you were screwed, so power weapons were a moot point. Instant death being negated is nice, however but hardly more advantageous than a 4+ overall.
The main problem I have with these changes is the reduced survivability. 5+ is not reliable. This is why hardly anybody takes Tactical Terminators. Couple this with the fact Warriors are rumored to become EVEN WORSE, and you have an army that may be more plentiful, but is hardly more survivable. Besides, why would I want to take more Warriors at all when the same weakness they have in the old Codex is still prevalent?
The difference now is that they will fall more frequently and get up less. Oh, and I think it goes without saying the need to buy more models is par for the course for GW as of late. I am sorry; I just don’t want my Necrons to become a horde army. Less MEQ armies is nice, but the identify of Necron to be ridiculously survivable is being tossed.

2) Named Characters
I feel named characters in general are too prevalent, especially when they outshine generics. That being said, Necron named characters is just asanine. The army’s identity as a soulless and nameless entity is being removed. Now we have Leroy the Necron lord, who likes to Flay people during his downtime. Of course this makes Flayed Ones troops, obviously!

3) Vehicles
No. Just…no. Can we PLEASE have an army that doesn’t rely on vehicles? Here’s the thing. Necron have the most advanced teleportation technology and utilization in 40k. Build on that to make it more unique. The concept of an army that can rapidly and accurately teleport around the battlefield would be a lot of fun. We don’t need fast open topped space chariots to cruise around in with your weakened units to keep them alive. Dark Eldar already does that for us. Even worse, it is pretty obvious that a push towards vehicles is merely a blatant marketing scheme aimed towards new model purchases. How else can you keep your troops alive with reduced saves and a nerfed WBB? Vehicles of course!
4) Misc Unit Changes
Destroyers as Jump Infantry. Why? Oh I get it- they need to push the need for vehicles for mobility again. Pariahs not fixed, but just removed? Again, why? I also loathe the idea of squad leaders for an army of undead robots. The new Cron have also not been rumored to get ANY boosts such as Stubborn or Fearless.
So now that the Necron have ‘fully awakened’ and enslaved the C’Tan (LOL)… they are now more vulnerable, yet still fear things? Just what the hell is going on here?

There are more points of contention I have with the rumors, this just scratches the surface.

Sorry if this post turned out to be a rant, I just have a horrendous and sickening feeling in my gut about the direction this Codex is rumored to be going in. It sounds absolutely appalling. I don’t care how outdated or non-competitive the old book is, I would rather stick with that than be shoehorned into the *******ization that this book is proposing. We waited this long for this?

What are your thoughts on the matter?
