So, I just finished Horus Rising, and I decided to do a little research on the Primarchs on Lexicanum. As I was reading all the articles, I found myself really enjoying the origin stories for each of them, before they were found by the Emperor. Each one was cooler than the last, so I decided to rate them.
And here's what I decided, in order, were the top 5 cool Primarch stories. Obviously, this is just my opinion.
5)Moratarion - This guy has what is most likely the darkest origin story. Dropped on a poisioned world ruled by tyranical, socerous warlords, who subjugate the normal humans, he is originally the tool of the warlords, then turns on them and leads the humans in a revolt. Unfortunately, he can't kill the last warlord alone, so the big E shows up and does it for him, denying him his final revenge. Smacks of an evil future, this story does.
4)Leman Russ - Russ is just totaly BA. He's literally raised by wolves, then the humans find him, and he becomes their undisputed king. When the Emperor shows up, Leman challenges him to an eating and drinking contest! Not terribly original, but he's just so utterly badass yet comical about it, he needs a spot.
3)Angron - The Emperor really screwed this guy. raised as a gladiator-slave in the pit-fighting arenas of an unknown world, he leads several unsuccesful slave revolts. Finally, he tries one last time, and is cornered by the armies of his opressors, facing certain death. In comes the Emperor, offering to save him and give him a shot at glory, if he leaves his men to die. Angron refuses, and decides to stay and die with his men. The Emperor takes him anyway, and his men are slaughtered. Gee, thanks, Dad!
2)Corax - This guy appeals to the guerilla warrior in me. Raised on a forge-world powered by slave labor, he slowly begins to formet a rebellion, and by the time Daddy shows up, he's overthrown the tech-tyrants and the workers have started what is basically a socialist collective. Not bad, not bad at all!
1) NIGHT HAUNTER!
Okay, this takes some explaining. Well, look at what the other Primarchs were before they were found: The vast majority were warrior-kings. Vulkan was a blacksmith, Lorgar was a prophet, Magnus the Red was a wizard. What was Night Haunter?
BATMAN.
I say again, Night Haunter is freakin' BATMAN. Well, actually, he's kind of a mix of Batman and the Punisher, but still! He grows up alone on the mean streets of a hive city, eating feral animals to survive, and of his own will, he starts cleaning up crime in his city, his way. He kills every criminal he can find, from corrupt beauracrats to petty pick-pockets, stringing their bodies from the towers and filleting them like fish. Eventually, the crime rate literally drops to zero and he steps out of the shadows, taking control of the city through sheer intimidation.
Tell me you wouldn't love to follow Primarch Batman!
So, what are your favorite Primarch origin stories, or even just stories about the primarchs in general?

I like Lion'el
gets sent to a deathworld, and as a primarch infant, kicks the *** of the best the deathworld sends to him!

Night haunter can't beat a man that grew his own wings...Sanguinius!!!!

Its hard to choose a favorite, but here are my top 3...(basically in order)
3) Mortarion - Best backstory "fluff" wise. Full of tradegy and drama that really builds a strong character. Defenitly the best overall backstory, it really makes you understand Moprtarion unlike a lot of the other Primarchs.
2) Rogal Dorn - He was not found by the Emperor, unlike all of his brothers. He built a gigantic spaceship (the size of small planets) and used it to go find the Emperor.
1) Ferrus Manus - The man hunts down a living metal dragon and drowns it in molten lava with his bare hands. I could go on and talk about how he was said to be able to cut mountains down with his hands and how after killing the dragon his arms/hands where covered with the same living metal as the dragon was, but theres no need... the man drowned a living metal dragon in molten lava with his bare hands!
* Honorable Mentions - Fulgrim, Angron (who the Emperor really screwed over) & Alpharius/Omegan (who the Emperor never even met)

Sanguinius as he is in my mind one of the only primarchs with a truely pure up bringing. He fought mutents to unite the human tribes making him humble and just. Wereas most (not all) of the other primarchs squabbled and fought with thier fellow men. He also pledged his loyalty to the emperor straight away so no grudges against him. Plus his story of defending the imperial gate against the hordes of chaos single handed rocks.

1. Alpharius/Omegon- I didnt think much of them until reading Legion. Quite impressive gameplanners.
2. Sanquinus- Broke a Bloodthirsters back across his knee. Enough said.
3. Mortarion- A unrelenting, unstoppable force. Believe in pure strength of will, and his home planet is quite interesting.

Ferrus Mannus was bad***!!! But I cant pick a favorite!
Roboute Guilliman... sent away by Horus so he wouldn't have to fight him, he basically rebuilds and reorganises Imperial forces after the Heresy. Then there's that little book he wrote :P

Yeah, but you're not allowed him, cos hes the primarch of the ultramarines, and no on e likes them for the reason theyre more awesome than the rest of them. ;)

How has no one mentioned Fulgrim X.x I personally did just like Op and read horus rising then Lexicaniumed the Other primarchs and i fell in love with Fulgrim. Not only does he turn his home worlds terrible economy and food shortages around, and work his way to being there leader, he kills Ferrus Mannus, another primarch.
Plus his novel shows how crazy he becomes i loved his slow decent into madness... Just yeah Fulgrim+1
Both Pre and post heresy his attitude towards his legion is great...

Mortarion,
So flawed and tragic. He tried to enforce his standards of freedom and justice on others, in the end becoming the same tyrant he rebelled against.

Anyone who knows me will not be surprised... but RUSS!
Not only did he out eat and out drink the Emperor!!!
But he is just a cool character.
My favorite Russ story though isnt about the his discovery. It comes later.
The Spear of Russ. Basically, the Emperor made it, and gave it to Russ as a gift. Russ HATED it, and always used his sword.
One day while in a fit of rage, Russ threw the spear so far that most thought he had thrown it into the sun (from a planet, yea, he really threw it), then, realising the Emperor would be unhappy, he spent the next 3 weeks wandering around on foot trying to find it before the Emperor noticed!

Sheesh, that's a hard choice... well here are my favorites:
5) Jaghatai Khan
-Unites a bunch of disparate tribesmen to overthrow a freaking empire, pretty cool in my books.
4) Vulkan
-Hide in caves... or fight bad guys... hide in caves... or fight bad guys... eat hammer suckers! This guy grows up on one of the harshest worlds and hands the Dark Elves their behinds with a pink ribbon while doing it and all with smiths hammers, that's just plain cool.
3) Corax
-As others have said he totally owns a far more numerous and superior force with a bunch of half starved slave minors... twice!
2) Night Haunter
-Crazy, bat **** crazy, but cool as well. That's all I gotta say on the matter.
1) Leman Russ
-Ok so perhaps pretty cliche but still Russ was one of the few Primarchs to not just take over their homeworld and unite it, but establish a pretty well working government as well. Guilliman started with one and didn't have to really do anything, same with Vulkan, Jaghatai didn't really do governing, Corax didn't have time to do any really and so on and so forth. Russ started out growing up with Wolves and became undisputed King of Fenris... can't beat that baby.
However I wish there was more on Rogal Dorn and some of the other Primarchs, some of em don't really have much in the way of an origin story.

It's debatable how true it is, but I love the Index Astartes story of Alpharius leading the Alpha Legion against the Ultramarines for the first time and using Guilliman's rules of war completely against them.

trully love mortarion because hes the kinda guy that doesnt like any frills bell or whistles just what needs to be used to finish the job but hate him for turning traitor. but if you will have noticed by now i know i did when i was doing the same thing all i realized that all the traitor primarches were treated horriably by the epmorer when they were found i mean really look at the way he treated the loyalists and then the traitors

Magnus the Red. This is probably the worst example of the Emperor screwing over a primarch. Magnus believed that the ends justified the means and went against the Emperor's wishes, but with the best of intentions. Needless to say I am really looking forward to "A Thousand Sons" and "Prospero Burns" coming out.
Perturabo is a close second, if only for the trap he layed for Dorn that turned one of the greatest primarchs into a bitter, broken man.

May favorite would have to be [redacted] of the [redacted], the II Legion. His entire backstory is great, the planet [redacted] is interesting, and all of the [redacted] really adds depth to the Legion.

I've always loved the feud between Sanguinius and the Lord of the bloodthirsters, with the huge battle where Sanguimius gets beaten like a punk, and the culmination of them dueling in the sky over the gates of the imperial palace.
Konrad Curze's whole back story is pretty amazing, with the emperor's duality in dealing with him and the lose/lose situations Curze always wound up in. And of course the fact that he went completely insane.

;) Although I dont play Space Wolves I must admit Leman Russ has always appealed to me as he is so much larger than life! The stories about him are Legend
I also like Rogal Dorn in how he & the Fists defended the Palace on Terra & fought to retain the original size of the Loyal Legions but finally agreed to Guillimans plans to avoid another Schism.
