View Full Version : Comparison of Tau vs. Eldar playstyles

Hello all,
I have been playing Tau for many moons now and wanted to expand to one additional army (2 armies is max for me) and was wondering if Eldar and Tau were too similar of play-styles (aside from Psychic powers). They both seem to focus primarily on outmaneuvering. Everytime I build a list, it feels like it would be a bit too similar to Tau, which is what I do not want! Should I look at a more assault based army or is there something I'm missing. Oh and I do not want pure footdar, that seems to slow :)

eldar can be a very high speed army or can make a significant gunline, Eldar however lack the broadside's railgun and have to rely on Fire dragon suicide units to effectively deal with the heavier tanks out there. War walkers with 2 scatter lasers ,with guide+ doom combo on a unit, can cause some insane amount of armor saves, and you can take them in squads of 3... Wraithlords are slow and good tarpit units with T8 but keep them near your farseer or they will deactivate on you. Dark reapers will kill space marines all day, but cost a lot of points for it. banshees are your CC masters, however a bit fragile after the charge.;)
Over all, there is no(or little) overlap in a units designation, and by that i mean, if you want CC then take Banshees, if you want long range anti marine firepower take some dark reapers, if you want volume of shots against hordes(orks/nids) take war walkers, etc...

eldar are fun :) but there playstyle isnt much like tau, and everything has a role.
but i have a question? fun or comp? eldar have lots of fun units that are rarely used but with the right general can be very nasty 2 examples are: warp spiders,the spiders can warp to the enemy , shoot and warp away in the assault phase, and gunspam:
heres a little group of models that make non - transport heavy armies cry
farseerx2 (guide, doom)
dire avangersx2 (10 man + exarch+ twinpults+ bladestorm)
war walkers x 9 (dual scatters)
on a turn with blade storm thats
66 BS4 S4 ap 5 18' shots
72 S6 BS3 S6 ap 6 36' shots
2 units can re-roll to hit and 2 enemy units are 'doomed' ( re roll to wond on them)
hur hur hur blob squads!
throw in some dragons (anti tank) and your ready to use up all the FLG's dice :P
