View Full Version : The future of CSM

Lots of interesting rumours flying around these forums at the moment. I fancied sharing a speculation that I would love to come to be the truth.

In the grim dark future of 2012 the United Kingdom holds the Olympics; athletes come from around the world to compete in the post-apocalyptic city- scapes in England, causes by severe ongoing rioting.

From these ashes comes the Chaos Space Marine codex. A 'vanilla' chaos marine codex detailing your average renegade war-band whether they be the damned company of the Lord of Caustic Soda or the Black Legion. generally most CSM's wont remember the Heresy and will have been created long since then, stripping most of their individuality in organization/units :(

However.

Then In White Dwarf we see the return of Index Astartes (or something akin to it). Each week giving pages of fluff and some simple rules and an extra unit or two for those particularly individual chaos marine (and maybe space marine) chapters. Hopefully followed by a gallery of some really amazing conversions. And maybe a character model release. What would be nice would be a forge-world tie- in.

This would make me very happy indeed (well not the rioting).

That seems to be what the rumours indicate, a general CSM codex with a Legion codex or WD updates. Though I would imagine the vanilla marines would be a mix of Heresy era warbands and more recently traitorous marines rather than predominately the latter.

They'd never do it, but I always thought they could do Chaos space marines in two books. 1 book for the "Chaos" space marines- Death guard, world eaters, thousand sons, the emperors children and word bearers as undivided- this would focus more on chaos- loads of demonic gribblies, possession, pyschic powers, gifts from the gods etc. The other book would deal with the traitor legions- Alpha legion, black legion, nightlords, iron warriors- and would focus more on fighting the long war than on chaos.

I quite like the idea of a 'renegade humans' codex. The Lost and the damned was awful.

Allowing people to build on some more fringe human societies- a standard dex and then you add a 'flavour'. Lots of human units for everyone and then you can add Alpha Legion, Genestealer cult, Tau Gue-la, Blood Pact, Digganob, planetary governor, chaos-worshipping cultists (with daemons rather than alpha legion) and that sort of thing.

Standard units would be human militia types (here have this autogun and kill something), gangs, civilian vehicles, pdf, half-tracks, gangs on motorbikes, groups on horse-role aliens, grox herds, enforcers, medical staff etc etc

So Alpha Legion HQ gives you some marines as elites and some stealth rules for everyone
Blood pact HQ would give you access to stalk tanks and stormtroopers
Digganob would give you a load of orky vehicles.
Genestealer Patriarch would give you Magos, Hybrids and genestealers
Governor would give you arbites judges, and repressors.
Daemon Prince would give you lesser daemons
Gue-la would give you Tau diplomats, Gue-la auxillaries (humans with Tau weapons) and maybe some fire warriors or pathfinders.

This of course I don't ever expect to exist outside my imagination. But they would be nice 500pt ally forces to go with a main army.

Regarding CSM, I would love to see a codex which would give Chaos the variety of builds they used to have and more fluff. There have been rumors of a Chaos Legion codex for the spring of next year which I hope proves true.

Regarding the riots in the UK, how have GW stores been affected? When I was in college our local yobs would loot the shopping district almost every semester to 'express their rage over social injustice' and occasionally assault people. Funny enough, it was always the clothing and consumer electronic stores which were always affected. Are your yobs GW geeks?

One GW store closed, I imagine a few others may have done but I've not heard anything about them being looted. I imagine toy soldiers isn't a high priority in an underclass looters mind.

It would be iamusing if they looted a Leman Russ.

I haven't seen any government statistics indicating an Ork-Briton demographic amongst you, so the Leman Russ tanks may be safe for the time being. If not, you may want to consider emigrating for a Waaaaagh!!! may be in the making.

You say that and yet some wonderfully bright individual uploaded a photo of himself and his swag on FB with numerous X-box games and .....wait for it....three large tubs of mango body butter.

I dont think any GW stores have been hit, but then I don't think GW would announce it. Loads and loads of retail centres have been on lockdown and closed early though, so the staff have certainly had to go home early. The riots started in London, but it spread across the country, into the London suburbs and commuter belt and some other major towns.

Having said that they are hitting any shops in their path. Whilst electronics tend to be a pull, there has been plenty of incidents of hitting shop after shop in a line including hairdressers, charity shops (thrift stores??), and residential homes. GW hobby centres tend to be a little out the way and off the beaten track in most towns- the cheaper retail space away from the busiest areas. If police co-ordinate to hold the prime areas a GW might be hit, but in london they are few and far between, and in the suburbs it seems to be calming down. Some of the other cities are still having problems though.

So yeah, they seem to be as mindless, self centred, unthinking and impulsive as Orks. Some even have cockney accents (but most have faux ghetto accents).

::Looks around for an on topic post:: ummm, what does this have to do with being on topic beside chaos= chaos?

IMO, Chaos should be done like this :

Chaos Legions : full codex book. Details ALL the legions. Plastic kit's for cult legions i.e. death-guard, thousand sons - done like the Grey Knights/Space Wolves boxes, makes the existing units and brand new ones.

Lost and the Damned : Chaos Aliens, Mutants, Zombies, Renegade Chapters, Traitor-Guard and Cultists.

Chaos Daemons : they need more variation - more units for god-specific units, more soul-forge stuff (cyber daemons ect - see Doom1 and 2), Daemon engines, more undivided stuff ect.

I dont think Chaos Daemons need more god-specific daemons. I think they need more undivided daemons. At the moment there is just the Prince and the Furies, but with more undivided daemons it makes other specific god armies more viable/ creative.

I would go with a Hellfury (A big monstrous creature Fury), and maybe something humanoid with tar-like areas to represent cultists who have become lesser daemons. Maybe something that shows what happens to humans lost in the warp? Sort of half daemons, or maybe symbiotic daemons which have to cling onto the body of a lost person?

Isn't that what furries are? The lost souls of Chaos Worshipers who were not devoured but wrap by the... well. warp?

I kinda would like to see Chaos Legions get a character treatment like the Space Marine codex did. Where your special character gave you the flavor of the chapter they represented.

They are Daemons of the Undivided... Because they represent the Souls of those who can't make their minds up, and so Chaos punishes them with the form of the Fury, (Their "life" is supposed to be complete torture within the warp... And so they go on Real-space raids to break up the daily grind)

No GW shops were hit. On one street where looting was unoppossed every store apart from waterstones got looted or smashed up. Says it all really, i dont think the underclass are interested in fantasy wargames.

Some basic human grunt option would be nice, and please bring back plague zombies. I've got dozens of 'em collecting dust.

as a CSM player, coming on 9k points with only two tank/no walkers, i would like to see a dex more like the prvious edition, plenty of scope for a non-specific renegade, but stuff for all the primary legions, eg basalisk for iron warriors, alpha legion cultists, plus stuff for the other gods, eg brass collar of khorne,

chyper back in the dex, with the doomrider.

however i DONT want a dex where, like the old, for KB to be troops a Khorne lord is needed, or for 1k sons as troops a lord of Tzeench is a must. not so fust on flyers, or a grey knight style box, i think it just wouldnt be viable, too many different legion styles for one box
