So I was playing last night and got into a little argument about wound allocation and paladins.

So on page 25 has the rules for wound allocation on complex units. When I read the rules I see it that when one unit is shooting at my paladins I can allocate the wounds to anyone in the wound as long as everyone gets at least one. So if I have 5 paladins and Dragio and I need to use my invulnerable save then I can use dragio. And then if a second squad shots at the paladin I can still place a wound on dragio before anyone else.

My opponent reads the rules that after Dragio or any paladin takes one wounds from the first firing squad, when a second squad shots at them I can't put another wound on them before another unwounded model takes a shot. So if Draigo takes a wound from the first squad because I failed the invulnerable save then when the second squad shots at the paladin's I can't give the wound to Dragio. I believe that was wrong but he was very committed to his view and it was already midnight. I want to make sure that I have the rule correct. If two different squads shot at the unit I can place the wounds how ever I want (in this case, two lascannon shots).

Yup, you were right. Wound allocation is done on a unit by unit basis, not over the entire shooting phase.

I belive your oponent was confused over the multiple wound unit details that say if identical models take wounds they are not split between them so 3 carnefexes take a total of 7 unsaved wounds it kills one and another goes down to 3 wounds rather than keeping one alive and spreading the wounds around.

Now im quessing youve done the cleaver thing and armed all your paledins indervidualy so you can wound allocate like a pro

Exactly....and that was annoying him to know end. And I believe you were right, the mutliple wounds section was the evidence that he used against me (and since it was late I was too Tired to argue).

Thank you all for the help. I am now armed with knowledge and confidence! My Paladin shall not be questioned again!

Equally, wound allocation is done at each initiative stage in combat, so if an enemy unit it made of models with several different initiatives (perhaps a character, a squad upgrade with an initiative bonus and then regular guys) you may be able to take several saves on one unimportant guy without having to risk anyone else in a unit. Obviously in your Draigo/Paladin unit, Draigo is an independent character, so would only be wounded if he was targeted by attacks rather than along with the unit.
