So just like the title says, what's the current word on the release of the Tau? It seems as though Necrons are going to be out before them, which is fine, but I was wondering where they stand on the lineup.

They've slipped from November, to early next year to later than that....
I wish they'd come out soon.

Nobody really knows for sure, but trawling around a few forums next year Q2 or Q3 is the usual guesstimate. But as with all things GW, until we get the nod it's all conjecture.

Tau will be a 6th edition codex. My best guess is November 2012.

Probable won't see Tau until summer of 2012 or after, and even then we might get screwed over with a White Dwarf dex. Or Tau might get passed over all together.

Supposedly Tau are going to be the first xenos 6e release. Necrons will be sometime in the Fall, followed by Chaos Legions in the Spring. 6e will probably be July 2012. 6e boxed set will be September 2012, and the new Spehs Muhreen codex will probably be Oct 2012. Sooooo, I probably would say Jan/Feb 2013.

GW did say a while ago that they were going to update all the codexes before the next edition, and whilst I'll believe the 6th edition rumours when I see them, I doubt all the codexes will be updated. They need to do Necrons, Tau, BT, DA, Eldar, Orks, Demons & C:SM. Assuming the (optimistic) rate of codexes is one every other month, starting in November at the earliest, that is still at least until January 2013. That then leaves a gap of no 40k releases until they update 6th edition in summer 2013. Whilst they could fill that with second waves, I doubt they would like to go that long without a big 40k release. It also leaves the likes of Orks and Demons in the frustrating position they are currently in of getting an update just before a new ruleset and knowing they will be waiting again until the end of the next cycle. It would make more sense to do them early on in 6th ed. We will definitely see SOB and Necrons before 6th ed, and maybe Tau, but I doubt there will be much more than that.

From what I've heard, there are updates coming for every old army, but not codex updates. They'll likely be getting PDF/FAQ updates similar to what happened with the DA/BT FAQs that brought them up to speed with the 5th edition Marine codices.
At this point, those FAQ updates could likely wait until the release of 6th edition, similar to how the fantasy armies got a PDF rules supplement with 8th ed.

That was early in 5th Edition, many things have changed since then, including the launch of a new Fantasy Edition far sooner than anyone else thought.
They need to do Necrons, Tau, BT, DA, Eldar, Orks, Demons & C:SM.
Actually, it's Necrons, SoB, BT, Tau, DA, Eldar, Chaos Marines, Orks, and Daemons, that are not fully 5th Edition (though Orks and Daemons were the closest).
C:SM was the first codex out for 5th Edition. Sisters have not been fully released yet (need that second WD to actually BUILD the army).
Also, one rumor I heard was that Tau was going to get a WD update, like 4th Edition Blood Angels and 5th Edition Sisters.
But rumors are probably not true, so you should tell everyone you know.

By C:SM I meant Chaos Space Marines, I perhaps should have made that clearer. And if you want to be pedantic over spelling, the OED allows either Demons or Daemons, with the latter being the archaic spelling. I know that is how GW spells it, but either is acceptable.

somewhere in the next few months is what I've heard.
