Do you think we are mad running an apocalypse tournament?

The rule set is on the forum.

I want your feedback.

Broken armies you can think of that fit in the rules.

Thanks

G.

Quite simply, yes. Apoc is designed for fun play and for the games to take a long time; a day, even a whole weekend. The rules are extremely loose on purpose, so players can come up with their own solutions and create their own, unique game each time they play. It is not designed with the idea of tournament play in mind. The ingenious way gamers have of finding loopholes in rulesets goes in to over drive with Apoc. While in a single Apoc game or at the end of a campaign, this can be hilarious, exhilerating and downright engaging to play, in a tournament environment, you are simply going to end up with a lot of unhappy gamers at the end of the day/weekend (apart from the guy who wins, obviously :P)

Also, 3000 points isn't really an Apocolypse game. I know the book says 3000 points is the minimum size, but there is the important word; minimum. Also, allowing people to change their lists between games is going to be an all mighty hastle. Fair doos, they have to change it before the next game is announced, so they won't be tailoring it to their opponant, but it is still going to massively slow down an all ready slow process. I know some people will finish their games early, but half an hour between the end of the first game of the day and the start of the second seems way to short, given that people will want to eat/pee/poop, as well as possibly alter their lists, move large volumes of miniatures around in (possibly) quite a crowded environment.

Personnally I am really terrible at thinking of broken armies. I do, however, have a friend who can come up with the most broken combinations imaginable, so I'll pass the ruleset on to him, see how evil he can make it.

Also, one final note; Flank March and Disruption Beakons. Two stratagems that have the potential to ruin each and every one of the 32 games you will be presiding over. For the sake of all sanity, stop them, either by altering how effective they are or removing them all together.

Hope that comes across as constructive criticism and not bile. I love Apoc games and fairly regularly play at 6k+, and have even played in games over 30k per side with fewer than 3 players controlling those forces, so don't mistake what I'm saying for hating.

Hope that helps,
Shades

Also, if I weren't quite so far from Huddersfield, I could almost be tempted should the rules get tweaked somewhat.

I'm not sure what you mean by "rule set of the fourm", but if your following standard apoc rules, Their is almost infinit possibility for broken armies people can make. I don't even know were to start. XD

1) ban strength D weapons. Make them S10 AP1 instead.
2) what was said about Flank March and Disruption Beacons was dead on.
3) allow your players to come in with two lists. Allow them to pick which list to use before the next game.
4) Reavers will seriously mess everything up. for 2000 points, they can lay out 45sq inches of s10/ap1. Per turn.

I'd just run a 40k tournament with the base book and no force org chart. I would highly recommend NOT using Apoc because it was never designed to be balanced in the first place. You get a single super-heavy flyer or a Thunderhawk and it's pretty much over. The winner will basically be "who has the most expensive toys"

My advise is not do Apoc. Do what the last tournement I went to was.

2000 points including a super heavy. With the exception of the superheavy it was standard force organisation charts, but also allowed fliers. Also all Titanjs were limited to a max of 1 Strength D

Its much more balenced (sure you could take a reaver but its not gonnahave much backing it up, and will be the target of lots of firepower in lists designed to kill Superheavies.

Apoc just ins't balenced enough to play in any sort of competitve sense. He who goes first in Apoc probably wins.

Also there are so many dirty tricks that don't need the flank march assets.

Take a Warlord titan at 2500points and use the replacement asset. That way it can be replaced when it dies.

Take the datasheet that lets horrors deploy in your enemies deployment zone during deployment, but can't be shot, shoot, move or assault until turn 2. Put them in a long line in front of your enemies forces and they can't do anything first turn.

Gargantuan creatures are significantly undercosted for how survivable they are

Take the Tzeentch FW greater demon or fateweaver and the asset chaos altar. Gives them a 2+ invulnerable (which is re-rollable for fateweaver)

You think a seer council is hard in a normal game? Try meeting a 2500point jet bike council.

Banning str D is stupid, but limiting it is senseable, either doing limited amounts of Str D weapons per player, or limit to one on a vehicle.

I am pretty sure I could right a 5000 point list (i have a few) which is nearly industructable.

I would love to go to an apoc tournament and if i wasnt in southampton i would of come up for the tournament, but it def needs a lot more comps, or banning certain things and editting how some things work

When you hit 5000+ Necrons come into they're own. They become a pretty competitive army with Pylons (Heavy 3 str D AA, goodbye thunderhawks) and 3+ wbb against everything (spam lords and tomb spyders). I've seen necrons at this point level take down some pretty competitive armies with few few casualties. It's pretty funny to watch.
