View Full Version : Battlefoam alternative?

So, I'm looking for a battlefoam replacement. I need to transport some 5k points of ultramarines, 2k points of blood angels and some 50 points of cygar. I'd prefer to put them all in one case.

Before someone recommends battlefoam, even though the thrread title asks for alternatives...here is my review on said company.

I purchased the 1520 when it release calling in a list for custom cut. Went over everything several times over several calls including talking with the layout designer and was assured everything would fit but that I'd be left with 2 standard troop trays since I wasn't using the total foam allocation. Then sat down to wait for the 2 month delivery date. In the meantime I sent out the army for painting. The pack arrived on time and looked good except that it included what looked like 8 or so standard troop trays (instead of the 2 quoted...hinting at a fairly large amount of foam not custom cut as ordered) but, since I didn't have the models on hand to check out I decided to wait for them to arrive. The army showed up a month later and low and behold...the pack was NOT cut correctly for the vehicle list. So, here I sit $400 in on a giant battlefoam pack and nowhere to carry half my vehicles. Gave battlefoam a call, ended up talking to romio and was told...oh well, too bad, better luck next time, can't help you at all...essentially, piss off.

Fast forward to current day. I find myself adding a new list to my collection as well as a warmachine list...what to do. Do I suck it up, take it in butt and order $100 worth of custom cut foam for the stuff they initially screwed up (it currently gets carried around in a well padded cardboard box) and hope they get that and the new items correct. Or, find someone else who attempts to take care of their customers and gives them what they pay for. I had gotten over getting screwed but, in the current economy and doing some web searching for new foam, I started to get pissed again so this is MY review of battlefoam. Yes the foam that was correctly cut is nice, overall the pack is decent, turn-around time was abysmal and customer service was non existant.

Didn't we cover this not long ago?

Anyway, I make my own. I use >>this<< (http://www.onlinefabricstore.net/foam-and-pillows/foam/upholstery-foam/standard-density-upholstery-foam/1-by-24-by-108-upholstery-foam-.htm) along with >>this<< (http://shop.hobbylobby.com/products/wonder-cutter-plus-164293/) in a standard box. I then cover the box in decoupage of Hello Kitty and My Pretty Pony ..... ... ... what? Stop looking at me like that.

Best vehicle carry solution I've ever found.

PS: The rant, while it may make you feel better, makes you look rather bad. "I had a bad experience and choose not to give them any more business." would have been enough. Bravo for voting with your dollars, though. It's more important than most people realize. ;)

You frighten me good sir...

What sort of vehicle trays did you want? I have a couple of the space marine-pre cut vehicle trays that I ordered, but I didn't use. I wanted to have some packing options for my 12k of Sallies and 5k astral claw/tyrant legion, and my astral claws is using alot of Non-gw models (Go Ramshackle Games!)

I wouldn't charge you anymore than I paid with shipping to where you are. It might not be a permanent solution, but it might get you through your upcoming transport.

Well my way is kinda ramshackle, but so far it works for me, and its rather inexpensive. For my troops I use egg cartons, just whatever is left over from whenever I eat the rest of my eggs. Holds 12 troops in each of them, and costs nothing because its just recycling all that I have around already.

As for my non troops, I take old couch cushions (I live in a college town so getting extra of them at the end of semester is super easy) and than once you cut out the sections of couch cushion you need, you hot glue it down to some foam-board for sturdiness, and your gravy. It is a bit cheap looking, but its functional and keeps your stuff safe and thats all that matters.

If what concerns you is the use of a hot wire on urethane foam, not to worry. That hot wire I listed (and use) is designed to cut styrofoam and only just barely generates enough heat to melt the urethane foam. Generally speaking, however, all foam trays are flammable.

If what concerns you is the general nature of my mental health, take a number and get in line.

If Battlefoam didn't deliver the product you ordered and paid for, you ARE legally entitled to a refund, so you shouldn't be out the money, and you needed to have pressed it, hard.

All foams in the carry cases will burn or melt and release toxic gases if exposed to high enough heat. It's just a component of that, just like plastic.

Ugh...considering what tends to happen on college couches--that may not be the most hygenic of choices there...

You are doing the right thing, vote with your dollars. Unlike the other poster above saying you "look bad" speaking your mind, I say its a good thing to warn others of bad apples in this industry. I give my money to people with good customer service skills as well as decent product. I had a similar experience with the owner, rowmeo. He is a tool and I am happy to give my money to his competitors.:p

Thanks for the ideas, so far i've learned of about 4 companies I've never heard of until now. As for college couch cushions...holy crap I went to college and wouldn't touch those in MOPP4 gear.

@DCompanyChris I'm needing to fit in a land raider, 2 rhinos, 2 dreads and a squad of bikes...anything over that would just be bonus. The original was supposed to carry another drop pod as well but, I'll assume you have a 4" vehicle tray vs the 6" that the drop pods come in.

i went cheap after spending $50 a pop on GW cases. i bought an "egg crate" mattress cover at Walmart for $12 and a few tool boxes. i cut chunks of the mattress cover and did a reasonable job form-fitting them into the tool boxes. for smaller things and metal models(RIP) i always saved the foam insert they were packed with. so, with several tool boxes and a few small bungies i have some sweet ghetto-style transport cases. i have had a few breakages, but who hasn't?

There's also KR multicase, they seem to have a pretty spiffy system. I've ordered a catalogue and even got an email confirmation it was on it's way. +1 for customer service allready there.

well most of the nastiness involved with those couches is soaked up in the cushion cover moreso than the foam itself, but meh, doesnt bother me any

You sir get points for referencing chem warfare to college couches, made me laugh. I have to say, wouldn't want to see the tape after you were in contact with said couch.

Now then humor aside. Sabol designs. They have pretty good foam, and nice cases. They're a hell of alot cheaper than BF though, its pluck foam, but for over 100 (or more) cheaper than a BF case thats quite worth it. I too wanted the nicities of BF, but dear god that price is insane, the way money is now I can't justify getting it, or recommending it, Sabol on the other hand seems to be a really nice company.

They also give a little extra to military people if I recall correctly. Haven't tried this myself yet though, so I'm not sure how one would go about it, but hey for anyone that can claim that, free stuff is nice :D

I think you must have gone to a different college than I.

I'd still go with BattleFoam. I'm quite surprised at your story, as it is a completely 180 from everything I've ever experienced from that company. Romeo has always been aces to me.

I have to agree; if you waited a month after delivery to contact them to correct your order, I can see why he couldn't help you. That's a long time to wait, and you KNEW something was off from the start but took no action to correct. After a few weeks, his obligation to correct it has passed, as at this point you could just be outright lying.

When I had a problem - they accidentally shipped me the 'pluckable' loadout, rather than the more expensive custom cut I ordered, and was also missing an additional tray - I called them up the next business day and within the week had the entire order corrected.

Your stated circumstances of "waiting for the army" are irrelevant, as you knew there was likely a problem from the moment you received it. As a customer, you have an obligation to make contact with the seller to correct the order within a reasonable amount of time. "Reasonable" as concerns both parties, not just you.

Now, regarding the cost comparison to Sabol, sure Sabol is cheaper, it's also half as large. 1 Battlefoam custom cut troop tray can fit 25% more models than 2 Sabol trays, yet costs the same as the two Sabol trays - thus making it 20% more cost effective. In one 1520 I can transport what took three Mk1/2 transports, with room left over.

Not the first horror story I've heard regarding Battlefoam and specifically about Romeo, though I don't care to elaborate.

Personally I use exclusively Figures in Comfort, a UK based company.

http://www.figuresincomfort.net

They've undergone a change of management, but they've always provided ace customer service. Cases are well made and they've got a good selection of foam. Oh and as a useful bonus unlike Battlefoam there trays are compatible with GW cases if you happen to own one.

I guess YMMV with this, as it was the first poor BattleFoam story I've ever heard. And FWIW, BattleFoam makes foam to fit in GW cases...

But then again, I'm in the States; that may make it easier than for you European folks. That being said, I know BattleFoam is opening a UK warehouse soon....

Oh aye, Im not suggesting the bad reports are anything but a small minority, but then I also know some of the initial UK stockists who have dealt with him. Though that probably just reflects that he's a shrewd businessman. In any case, I'll not be switching to battlefoam personally.

That all said I wasn't aware they did GW sized foam, thanks for correcting me.

No worries; I can completely understand why your fellow UK mates may have had problems with BattleFoam. That makes a lot more sense. I've talked to both Romeo and his wife on several occasions about business, and they were certainly concerned about their ability to provide good customer service to Europe, hence the opening of the UK store.

I realize that KR Multicase is fairly big in the UK, but really, if Romeo ends up going to the UK upon the opening of that warehouse, I'd encourage you to check it out; I think your opinion of BattleFoam may change upon meeting him and talking to him.

But who knows.

I do the exact same thing, except I picked up a milk cartoon to put them in.

For vheclies I get the "egg trays" from the university cafeteria that their bulk eggs come in. I stack thows in milk crates and sandwitch vheclies between them to transports my mec stuff.

My Orks are the same trays except in a Cardboard file box.

for vehicles im just going to cut upholstery foam, and put it on foamboard, not free like the egg cartons were, but still fairly inexpensive. Plust with me playing primarilly tyranid, mostly that will just be for monstrous creatures.

Correct...that being said, not having a definite issue to bring up doesn't really give me any room to complain in the beginning. I knew something was not quite right but was unable to confirm it.

In the end, when I did contact them, there was zero record of them have a cut list for me and zero inclination to work on a solution. I agree that having had to wait that long removed them from having to take total responsibility but, for the cost and the time they took to cut it, offering SOME solution would have been a good move. "yeah you just spent $400 on a toy bag that's not what you ordered...we'll fix it for full price, again."

So yes, my experience may be in the minority. For the amount of money I lost...makes my view very negative. I just hope that reviews like mine make people realize, yeah they are part of the community and yes people have great experiences with them but, cover your *** when you order they are a business in the end and it's all about the bottom line.

On an aside, got a KR catalog coming and talking to them about filling out what I need. Maybe I can just unload this 1520 that's really a 720 ;)

Walmart Gun cases for 10 bucks work great for vehicles, that's what I use.
