If you could design the movie what would you have in it?
I would go with Imp Guard vs Tyranids on an agri world, have a good ratio of cityfirhgting and open plains and forests, and for the coup de gras definitly have Michael Biehn as the IG commander. The climax of the movie would have Space Wolves drop pod in just when all hope is lost. Epic battle scenes of Leman Russ companies, Storm Troopers in Valks, artillary barrages, and guardsmen in final stands

Horus Heresy or nothing if you want non-40k players to watch it. The Horus Heresy could have some really epic battles and at the same time the interesting story arc would bring in enough people to make spending the amount of money necessary to make a good movie actually worth spending. I would suggest a trilogy though.

It could replace the eventual remake of Starship Troopers. As long as the sequels don't suck as bad. I was always a bit iffy about movies based on wargames, but since PP is doing it with Monsterpocalypse, and Tim Burton is onboard, I guess I might have to revise my opinion.

Gaunt. The first few Gaunts Ghosts books as a series.
What would be amazingly fun, yet also so awful it might be good (maybe) would be the battle at Orks Rift. Just a blow-by-blow remake of Zulu, but with Praetorians and Orks. If its in CG Michael Cain can still play the same part.

First War for Armageddon. Space Wolves, Imperial Guard, Grey Knights/Inquisition vs World Eaters, Daemons of Khorne, Khornate Cultists, and Angron.

Are we looking this at fanboy bolter porn, or something that you'd try to market to the rest of the world also?

would prefer tv series, can draw out narrative so it would not just be random violence,.
only problem is that although i would state the the small screen has more artisitc creadibility these days, perfect for capturing the newances of the fluff, crittically acclaimed dramas always talk about peoples feelings which would be near unachevable in a dystonian sci-fi universe. plus like most science fiction any production would be wide open to "generic scifi technobable" critiisims for dialogue.
id say its best to stick with the black library: at least literature is able to bypass the inevitable "dumbing down", not the best term i admit but ill stick with it for want of a more articulate vocabulary, for a "mass audience".

Honestly, what I would like in a 40k movie isn't what I would end up seeing. Probably some big buget Micheal Bay bolter porn with a pg-13 rating to rake in the cash from all the little ones.
Now, I would love to see a true character peice, the common man or woman engulfed in the middle of a conflict between imperial and choas forces. Showcasing the hopeless and superstitious nature of the people, while presenting both sides in more of an antagonist role while our protaginist is just trying to find a safe place.

For me, the Horus Heresy series or the Eisenhorn series. (Perhaps becacuse they are the only BL books I've been reading. I would start with Horus Rising as a duology of films, the first the Battle of Sixty-Three-Nineteen and the Whisperheads, the second one the bloodbath on Murder and the Interex affair. It would be awesome. Each novel could easily be split into two films to maximise profit and awesomeness.
The Eisenhorn series would introduce viewers to the 41st Millenium through the eyes of the citizens rather than the military, to dispel the notion that the entire Imperium is constantly at war. Also, Eisenhorn is awesome. :D

Just do a Sharpe style Gaunt's ghost style series...

Forget Horus Heresy, 40k can be marketable just needs a good writer, a good writer can do anything...

Nah if its 40K people are going to want to see space marines in the lead roles. I have to say the book Brotherhood of the snake was a good read and would make a good film too.

A TV adaptation of the Horus Heresy's opening trilogy would be an obvious choice if done by HBO or AMC. It would need to be relatively effects laden, so due to that I don't know how much it would or would not fit what they can do.
Clearly it would make sense on SyFy, but I'd be concerned they'd focus more on the battles and less on the characters.
I actually think an Inquisition based TV series would work best.

I under stand your logic but,
The problem there is suddenly you need cgi or some other ott special effects as opposed to just costumes and makeup...

I'd love to see someone like HBO tackle the Horus Heresy.
It's a little tough to work out how to tackle it - I think it would require a lot of adaptation from book format, owing to the nature of the changing casts/locations throughout the books. You'd have to pull all of the material from the central storyline (the Heresy itself) from among all of the books, and keep the cast of characters relatively focused in a few places (namely on the Primarchs).
The end result, I think, would be that there would be a lot of material missing from the books as opposed to what's in the series, but it would be a much more cohesive and dramatic presentation of the story overall.

It's not really a problem...
A 40k film or TV series is going to require lots of CGI regardless. You'll have all of the stuff in space, alien/hive worlds, aliens daemons, etc. etc. There really wouldn't be any getting around it.
And special effects like that are already commonplace even in TV shows. It's not a big deal.
That aside, you could absolutely do Space Marines with mostly costumes and makeup, and some good camera angles and editing effects to make them look suitably large - just look at what they did with the hobbits in the LOTR movies.

I don't think a TV series is out of the realm of imagination; I'd say there is a lot riding on how well received the Space Marine video game is. If it sells well, someone is going to want to explore the universe in more detail. Then, of course, it's up to GW to allow it to happen (not holding my breath.)

Aye but look at the cost for what is essentially a niche market, with guard you just put the lasers in afterwards lol

What about a TV series centred around a Rogue Trader?
That way you would get to see all different sides of the Imperium and other yet unexplored parts of the whole 40K universe..?

that would be quite cool
especially if the whole 40k universe was kept under wraps so they had a mid series bombshell such as "Astarties! F*** me i didn't realise this was based on 40k!" or simmilar posts cropping all over the internet
i fear that a "true 40k" setting ie space marine wars, would polaries the potential audience and colour their expectations. i personally believe if a 40k programme was made it would have to stand on its own merits before it gets bogged down in the familliar- plus it would be a boon for the profiles of lesser xenos species in 40k such as the hurd

personally...i wouldn't have chosen to do smurfs v chaos....too cliche!!!! the story of horus and his turnign would have made it more intresting...as long as he was voiced/acted by the cool vampire from Blade 2, i would have any objections :P

And... how about we let the people that did the BSG remake handle it. That would be the balls.

The graphics and some of the production definitely kicked 'em, but the writing and stories totally sucked 'em. So, as long as they show Moore, Ron to the curb, I'd agree.

A massive multi million big budget orgy of spending on the Horus Heresy please, more realistically perhaps focus on an inquistor who goes around and solves mysteries whenb he's not commanding armies. Like a more violent doctor who.

Think BIG!
For kids/teens I would have the CGI story of a teenager and the trials of becoming a Scout, Marine, etc etc in a relatively wholesome way. Lots of Xenos to kill, maybe some friends become enemies, some enemies become friends...
For the adults I would go for a BSG style series based around the Horus Heresy
Also maybe a Band of Brothers Imperial Guard story. Maybe another regiment involved in the Sabbat Worlds crusade, but keep the Ghosts as novels.
And for films... Something Inquisitiony. Like the Eisenhorn trilogy gone film.

IG Vs any xenos would be stupid, as it's already been done and you wouldn't grasp any of the back-history. Rogue Trader would be damned awesome, especially if a deathwatch unit and Inquisitor were onboard and they traveled the galaxy causing shenanigans.
Necron vs Chaos Marines would be cool as a follow up, but it would only work if you established basic cannon first.
