View Full Version : Cadian 66th - airborne guard

Hi there everyone, bit of background for the log - main inspiration is from the Australian Defence Force (proud aussie here with aspirations in the air force), particularly on more recent deployments. More specifically, 3rd batallion of the RAR, the airborne one. As such I mainly wanted lightweight, specialised gear , and lots of it.
This army's been in progress for about a year now, but it's only recently that I've acquired what I'd call a decent level of skill on the painting front.
So without further procrastinating, here's some WiP pictures. Most of what you see below has been painted by now:

http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/kk133/cougarace/DSC02771.jpg
Those are my missile teams which I quite like when it comes to the posing and the conversions on the launchers themselves. They have no heads there as I was waiting for some respirators before I could finish them, painted pics will come soon though.
I'll put up pictures of the regular infantry later on.
That's all I have time to post but I'll be sure to put up more later, my army consists of more than the 3 or so guys I just showed you. Enjoy

Thanks very much for the comments
Beef Nuggets: The backpacks weren't converted, they're forgeworld grav chutes. I find they work very well on Cadians with a few slight adjustments
Datadep: It's part of the lascannon barrel, the bit in the middle.
Terricon: They've been painted, but the only photos I have of them post-paint are in group shots with some infantry which I was to show WiP first

A few mouldlines here and there at the time, but don't worry I always go back over them before painting.

Those poses look great. I always love to see new ways of mixing it up with heavy weapons teams.
As for the Elysian gravchutes...good call on using them, they look good on Cadians. For my Vets, I used gravchutes and put pouches and grenades on their shoulder pads to make them look a bit beefier.

I really like the poses that you created. I will be keeping an eye on your army to see how they turn out.
I like the poses, but the pics are huge. smaller pics makes this post easier to read.
Please tell me you're going back to take care of those mold lines.
Grav Chutes with Cadians always rocks. I like the one with the mask hanging down.

I like them, everyone except one. You dont lie down flat to fire rocketlaunchers, you just simply dont:eek:

MaidenManiac: I've heard both yay and nay when it comes to missile launchers lying down, I mainly made it just to have a go at making a prone guy.
AoM: Glad to hear you like most of them. If you'd read the text you'd see the bit where I said I always remove mouldlines right before I paint :p as for the pics, it's just how they come out of my photobucket, but I'll look into fixing that...
Here's some pre-paint (and yes, still some mouldlines but don't worry!) pics of some of the infantry:

I like the paint scheme. It is modern and realistic without being boring. Hopefully you aren't finished building yet because it is always nice to see someone put a little extra time and thought into the posing of their models.

Thanks rapture :) I'm far from finished, there are plenty more infantry to come if I can get enough respirators and grav chutes to make it happen. I'm also converting some custom advisors (officer of the fleet/master of ordnance/astropath) with a bit of a twist to them, pics of those soon.

nice stuff , this army is really shaping up nicely .
The way you posed your drop captain with hanging rebreather and power fist looks great. This is the first time I've ever been tempted to model some IG. Good job.
PS. I like the big pictures.

For the record, all light AT weapons can be fired from the prone position, trust me :)

I like your guys, especially the drop troops idea, as that is one I have not seen many pics of outside of forgeworld. Although I'm not a fan of desert schemes in general, I do like yours.
And a question, why use sly marbo for the conversion?
Burnie
09-06-2009, 05:17 AM
Thanks El Scotcho, I'm glad you like them. Well the main reason I used him for marbo is that he closely resembles a mate of mine who has a rambo obsession, so I thought it would be a good tribute. He also stand out from the other guardsmen (taller, silenced laspistol, jumpsuit instead of fatigues) in a way that I think a character like marbo should.

wikkid work there mate
I have some similar lookin cadians to yours in that the theme im going for is an all respirator army... costing me an arm and a leg but it will be worth it when gets round to it
I especially like your cadian missile launcher... its very Javellin like :P
Its conjuring up all sorts of imaginative thoughts hahaha

Thanks guys.
Vman: Thanks especially, I'm quit chuffed with the missile launchers myself :D I know what you mean about respirators though, a parts shortage has slowed this project down to a crawl for me, good thing I've got my terminators to work on in the meantime.
Look out for new posts hopefully soon once I get the bits I need, or for my new project everyone :)

Thanks mate, glad you like it :)
After a long hiatus from the hobby I'm finally back in for a bit. Here's a (very) PiP picture of a bunch of veterans I'm painting up. A bit stuck on how I want to paint the shotguns...

Hello mate,
I'm living what you've got going on here, unfortunetly my modeling skills are not so great but I'm hoping that the "Cadian 137th(V) Air Assault Brigade" will find glory in the name of the Emperor!
Mine consist of a company command and a three veteran squad core all air mobile, but I'm torn about a executioner and a vanquiser tank or a pair of Vultures for heavy support...
"Sigh!" Hard choices ahead but..... Mmmmm! Vultures would be pretty sweet!

Easily one of the best Guard armies I've seen, absolutely love all the cool FW and Marbo conversions.
Gonna get any tanks anytime soon?

Thanks for the kind words guys! I've almost finished painting this batch, should have some pics up before the new year.
Zapp: Practice makes perfect mate, get converting and you'll improve real quick I'm sure! Sounds like a formidable list. I personally would go with the Vultures as I'm an aircraft nut, but then again everyone loves a bit of armour.
Person person: Thanks mate, I'm flattered :D I have a couple of LAV model kits that I use as Chimeras but I haven't factored them into my new edition list just yet. I'll probably repaint them in Aussie camo sometime soon though. In terms of heavy armour I'm not sure at this stage, these are meant to be mostly airmobile but I've thought about attaching some sort of armoured contingent. Just need to find a tank I like better than the basic Russ (I've got something in mind)
Lord Inquisitor: Thanks mate, I like to try and give each guy/batch their own little story. Sometimes it helps to try and strike the pose you plan to convert :P
More to come soon, watch this space!

They look ace.
You can really tell which bits are FW, not just the gear and guns, but even the arms are a little more realistically porportioned.

Have a few days off at home so I put this guy together. Idea is to count as sgt. Bastonne for the veterans (plasma pistol = hotshot, combat knife = power weapon). The shotgun's more for uniformity than anything else. Could potentially make a captain Al'Rahem otherwise. Enjoy and thanks for reading
