Hey guys, I just started painting my medusa conversions and in the process, I decided that I'd share how I get the effect that I do. This tutorial is only for the first stage of weathering, which is masking and getting the big rusty areas finished, a pin wash is next, followed by some rust effects, etc.

Hope you enjoy the tutorial: http://www.thediceabide.com/2011/05/weathering-101-masking/

like the conversion, but are you going cadian or catchan with the scheme and rust????

Here is my first shot at weathering with oil paints. I mostly used Burnt Sienna, Burnt Umber and some Yellow Ochre. After this pic was taken, I went back over the rust with more burnt sienna to age it a bit. What do you guys think?

More about it here: http://www.thediceabide.com/2011/05/medusa-weathering-cont/

I may pull off some of the streaks and do a bit more filtering before I go back over with streaks.

I think your oil wash is a bit subtle. Gloss coat your model, then try mixing some black and burnt umber, and making a wash out of that. It will look really dark at first, but let it dry. Then go back over it with a thinner dampened brush with vertical strokes. This helps to blend the dark oils into the surrounding paint making for a nice transition. The gloss coat will ease this process and allow you to move the pigments around much easier. It will also give you the rainmarked, streak effect I'm guessing you are looking for.

Aye! A gloss coat does wonders for fluidity. You can fixate it it a matte or satin coat afterwards.
