Obliterator conversions

Inspired by these two threads http://www.belloflostsouls.net/2009/06/40k-hobbypainting-budget-obliterators.html and http://www.belloflostsouls.net/2009/07/40k-hobby-chaos-obliterators-by.html I decided to have a go at making my own, partly because I've done relatively few conversions & wanted to set myself a modelling challenge and partly because I don't like metal figures & thought I'd have a go at making something more dynamic out of plastic rather than buying another three.

The reason I started this thread was to let people know how easy it was even for a conversion newbie like me.

I started by I picking up some second hand terminators, stripped, disassembled and cleaned them up ready to start.

I wanted to end up with something part way between the two examples I'd seen. Looking at the metal figure the solution I came up with was to bulk out the torso with plastic card, mask it with a covering of mutant flesh and use parts from the mutant sprue and arm conversions again with mutant flesh to cover the joins. I put them on a slightly built up base to give a little extra height and figured that with these changes no one would really notice that the legs and shoulder pads were less bulky.

To give a sense of the plastic card work I've attached a shot of the modified torso & a mostly painted model and another of another mostly painted model and a metal version for size comparison.

Really good job. I know having dabbled with greenstuff it seems very daunting to begin with. However after a bit of time and the right tools it's actually rather simple to get something you like. I think that you'll notice future delving into greenstuff will be easier and quicker for you. Nice work all around on your models and a nice saving on your wallet i'm sure.

yeah, I am still learning about greenstuff. I still primarily use it for gap-filling, but I am noticing that I am becoming much faster at it!

It's gratifying to know that the time I spent on hobby articles like the one cited at top were helpful to someone out there. Given the "trolling" comments that often appeared back when I was contributing articles regularly I had begun to think I was completely wasting my time.

These guys look pretty good. I wish I was better at greenstuff. I would like to see some some of these guys with weapon morphs...but instead of the real weapon seemingly grafted onto an arm...I want ones that look like the weapon itself is made from flesh.

Nope, definitely not wasted, although it may seem like a thankless task. Without regular articles sites tend to fail and we'd be all worse off - even the trolls.

I tend to save links to modelling & painting articles that I find particularly interesting so while I may not use them immediately I will get use out of them eventually.

It's funny, I've been involved in 40k for about 11 years but while I play fairly irregularly now I still do a bit of modelling or painting every week.

Those are great! Don't mind the trolls, they're just an ignorable part of the internet fauna.
