Simple enough really: if you were forced to choose only one of the following four options, which would it?

Playing the game, mathammer/theory, converting, or painting?

I've not put any combined combinations, because, well, the hobby naturally includes all of them (and I'm fully aware that converting and painting go hand in hand). But I reckon everyone has a part of the hobby they prefer to the rest. So you only get to vote once :)

Which is it?

(edit: I originally tried adding a poll to this, but my Internets skills were not up to the task :()

Painting.

Its the reason I started this hobby in the first place.

Playing. I am a ham-fisted oaf so my painting/converting skills are rudimentary at best.

hand me the glue and knives! Converting everytime. Even got me a scrap deamon statuette :)

Not that I don't love the others as well (although my theory doesn't match up to how well I do at the rest)

Although my conversion skills be on the rise!

And who would choose Mathhammer as their favourite?

Converting.

Two options you might choose to include are- reading the fluff (Codiceii and Black Library) and Playing(in a narrative campaign). The difference in a narrative campaing to a normal game is your characters grow in personality and you get a sense of a world unfolding (particularly in specialist games) which is a very seperate pleasure to the use of tactics and the thrill of combat etc that you'd get from playing a one off game.

For me it's collecting. I started collecting then modelling a bit. I was so disgusted with my painting I stopped painting for years and just picked up the brush again.

Finally got some games in now, but don't care for WYSIWYG. I prefer what GW says and play for fun.

Painting without a doubt followed by Assembly/Conversion and Playing coming a close second and third
the reason playing comes third is that enjoyment of playing the game comes down to the person you are playing against

thankfully the friends whom i play against are a great bunch with no WAAC types at all

for example the last game i played was one of the best, my opponent suggested a Rorks Drift tyipe senario with my IG vs his Nids

i may do a battle report sometime this week

but there have been games that make me question why i play at all (admitedly these games were against people i didn't know and turned out to be asshats)

I was a modelmaker before a gamer, hell, long before 40k.

Painting....If I had to use a grey army....I wouldn't play at all.

Mathhammer/theory technically falls into 2 major categories:
- "gaming" the system... or rather "playing" the game, as trying to improve the odds fall under making an army list, thus it falls under playing the game.
- making entirely new rulesets. Think house-ruled combat patrols, house-ruled space hulk, house-ruled Battle Missions-style missions.

I doubt a majority of us will be voting for this category.

As for myself: Gaming, with a heavy dose of converting.

You could make this thread into a poll.
He did... ... try, but the Machine Spirit of the BOLS forums rejected him. It is all in the OP's post.

Converting, although I do usually aim for an army (even if I don't always make it to a full playable force) and have only a few standalone projects.

I did try :$

If someone who knew how could make it happen, that would just be peachy-keen :)

Oh, and forgot to add my own preference, which is conversion. Like it better than any other part of the hobby.

I would say playing, I haven't got into painting and now have a massive pile of minis to paint which is a bit daunting.

But I think I spend more time reading the tie-in fiction, as far as I am concerned in the 40k universe DA stands for Dan Abnett ;)

Each choice so good.......Decision to difficult....Must decide before my head explodes!

Converting!

No wait, Playing!

What about reading fluff? Did I just make the decision more difficult instead?

Painting, I love the painting.

I give up!

Of those, the only one I really don't enjoy is painting. I like modeling and converting, but not painting. I like playing the game, but I like working through the theory almost as much. Fluff is pretty secondary for me, as well--I don't dislike it (in the way that I dislike painting) but I don't put a whole lot of effort into it, either, for the most part. The two or three 40k books I've read were trash, and the fluff in the codices isn't terribly well written, either. Honestly, my favorite source for fluff is the Lexicanum wiki, because it tends to distill the garbage out of the 40k fluff and just give me the basics, instead.

I would have to say playing. I don't play at stores, i play with 5 other of my friends in a large garage with loud music, swearing and drinking. We have the best of times :) . second i would have to say conversions.
