So a quit edit to this post. I intent to use this as a showcase for my finished Grey Knights. If you want demo's and tutorials I will be posting them up on my blog. So I went back and changed the base as the more I looked at it the more I disliked it. I went with a city theme, and plan to do a lot of asphalt basing. Here is the mini with the new bae.

Very nice :D How did you get the sword effect?

Understated painting (that is no comic effects) yet beautiful. I really like your subtle painting. You have a nice figure there Col Festus.

By the wy noticed your avatar pic do you have a DKoK army and if you do any pics of them?

Did you freehand the swords on the shoulders?

@Cyberscape7
The sword was a bit of a challenge. Normally for blues I start with an enchanted blue base, but it didn't look right. For this effect I started with Necron Abyss then blended it up to Hawk Turquoise and then up to a 1:1 of White and Hawk. I was pretty happy with the way the effect came out.

@DadExtraordinaire
Yup I sure do, including a tutorial. Check out my blog (www.firstranksecondrank.blogspot.com) and search for Death Korps

@wittdooley
Yup, I decided to free hand everything on these models. The one nice part about GKs is the armies tend to be smaller so I can spend more time painting each model!

Thanks the comments guys! I'll try and keep things updated here. For more in depth work check out my blog First Rank, Second Rank. (www.firstranksecondrank.blogspot.com)

fantastic mini!!! the blending is fantastic! my only concern is the base looks unfinished! maybe a wash or highlight might help?

Nice shoulder pads.

Something you might want to try out is glowing runes. I started painting all my GKs with them, and it looks great. I just paint the runes ice blue, then a bit of watered down midnight blue in the crevices, and drybrush white on the letters. You could switch up the colors to match your model's eyes. I'd post a picture but I don't have a good camera.

That...is one of the most stunning swords I have yet seen. The whole mini is superlative, but the eye keeps getting drawn back to the force sword.

Wow!

Thanks guys, Im still trying to figure out what I want to do with the base. I airbrushed graveyard earth on it for now. I'll probably spray it a different color, or do some layered highlights with bleached bone possibly. I'll figure it out. Any suggestions? ;)

I was thinking maybe of doing a road type thing with the asphalt and airbrush on some lines.

Ok as per request! Changed the bases up. I think this looks pretty good, I like the city setting and will probably use it for a display board/movement tray. What do you think?

Kicking model man but I just got to say it looks like he dropped 2 copper pipes. The end of the casing is missing the ridge at the end. Other then that it is amazing.

Thanks for the tips! I'll see if I can fix that problem tonight with a little paint. I was unaware that the firing pins remained on the shells! see what I get for not doing my research ahead of time? ;P

Base looks much better now. Befoe looked like he was standing on a piece of cork, now a piece of roadway carved up by excessive artillery shelling.

I'd be tempted to make the sword on his chestplate slightly brighter so it stands out a bit more from the armour.

I'm not sure if it looks like he's wearing a chastity belt or carrying the padlock for his shed, but that's GW's issue not yours. :p

Every Squad member has a person heraldry and name painted onto their right shoulder pad. Was quite fun actually!
