View Full Version : GW's sunken barge

I heard a rather interesting tale from one of the Forgeworld employees while I was at Adepticon.
Apparently some time ago, a barge sunk while carrying 40,000 Land Raiders. It was insured, so it meant no real loss to GW, but it makes for a funny story.
What would you do with 40,000 Land Raiders?

I'm guessing that was a joke.....they just happened to lose a barge with 40,000.....warhammer 40k models...I don't think you could fit that many on one barge.
BUT! If I had that many....I would make a GIGANTIC collage on the ground outta the parts....the picture...would be a land raider.

could 30,000 ebayed LR's cover the cost of a plane ticket to the US to claim 40,000 lRs? :D:p
oh and why would GW use a barge?! planes and lorrys seem to work just fine!

This is an old story, and mostly true from what I understand (like from the time of the initial batches of MK IIs).
Why use a barge? Cause it is cheaper to ship by surface than it is by plane, so to ship 40,000 of a non-time sensitive item, you'd have to pay thousands more to go air.
As I heard it, they were US bound, which is why they were on a boat, and not continental Europe. It was in the days before the US had a plant in Memphis.

I think this may be based on a event from years ago. When the Falcon was being introduced a container ship on the way to the US, hit a bad storm and some of the containers broke free and were lost at sea. One of the lost containers contained of large number of the pre release Falcon build up headed for the states. We use to refer to this around the office as the loss of a craftworld

Why ship just landraiders?, and a barge is pretty valuable- why not raise it.
A similar one I heard was that at one stage the Gw in Dublin had made some error on its insuarance. As a result the value it could claim on goods that were stolen wa much higher than their retail value, so that they made more money on stuff that was shoplifted on stuff that was sold. Never tested this theory out tho.
While I doubt it was 40,000 models and AFAIK they do not use Barges for ocean transport there may be some truth in the story.
I had also heard that a shipment was lost. IIRC shipping containers are about 8'x8'x20' so they could easily hold 2000 tank kits. Barges are used for shipping on large rivers.
What probably happened was that a container was lost and the invoice listed contents as
Plastic model kits, GW land raider, warhammer 40k. and some insurance claims adjuster missed the actual number in the container so paid for 40,000 kits.

It was probably sunk by dark eldar. Also, why wouldnt GW use battlebarges to carry landraiders ? seems fluffy to me.

I've heard from space wolf sources that Land Raiders works under water. All the recent earthquakes and bad weather is probably C'thulu fighting 40 000 landraiders and some very angry narwhales

That story reminds me of this one that had me in tears years ago:
LONDON/PARIS (Reuters) - A Norwegian-registered ship carrying hundreds of luxury cars sank in the North Sea on Saturday after a collision with a container ship in thick fog.
All 24 crew members were rescued before the cargo ship Tricolor sank after the collision at the entrance of the Dover Strait between England and France.
The ship was carrying 2,862 cars, including BMWs, Volvos and Saabs, worth $40 million to $50 million, a spokesman for Norwegian shipping company Wallenius Wilhelmsen Lines said in Oslo. It also carried tractors, crane parts and escalators in 77 roll-on/roll-off containers.
Also aboard Tricolor was about 2,000 tons of fuel oil, according to Lloyd's Casualty Reporting Service.
The Belgian coastguard said there was a slight leakage, but the Belgian sea rescue service said it was not aware any oil had spilled.
Lieutenant-Commander Antoine Goulley of the French navy told LCI television in the northern port of Cherbourg that French and British authorities had launched a plan to prevent any pollution risk, but he also said there was no evidence that oil had spilled.
Lloyd's said the Tricolor, which was taking its cargo from Zeebrugge in Belgium to Southampton in southern England, was now lying in about 25 meters of water.
Lloyd's said the container ship, the Bahamas-registered Kariba, was seriously damaged but was making its own way to the Belgian port of Antwerp.
The Tricolor's captain and two officers were taken aboard the Kariba, British and French coastguards said.
The rest of the mostly Filipino crew was picked up by a tugboat and taken to hospital in the French port Dunkirk, but there were no reports of injuries, the coastguards said.
The Belgian military frigate Wandelaar was ensuring security above the Tricolor, while the Franco-British tugboat Far Turbot was on its way to the area, French authorities said in a statement.

To answer your question of what you would do with them. Well assuming you could recover them, get to keep them under some salvage laws well i guess offer to sell them all back to GW.
Even at a discounted price (lets say 50% off) thats still nearly $2,000,000. (LR=$100x40,00).
So i think that would cover any costs.
Would be nice if it did happen.

Probably just an evolution of the old ship load of Eldar Falcon Grav tanks going down on the way to the US story, that ones been doing the rounds for years.

Shipping by boat is ridiculously cheaper than truck or plane. It's why all US states have a port, and Britain is littered with canals.

Raising ships is a dangerous and expensive enterprise. Even if the barge (which are just floating palettes in most cases) could be raised without damage it likely isn't worth it. Salt water also eats most materials pretty fast and plastics typically don't fare well.

Very few "if any" of those canals are used for goods transport anymore.

Only about 2/3 of the states have ports even when you count the great lakes and the Mississippi river.

Every state has a port, no exception. Name a state and I can look it up for you if you'd like. Example, ever notice that weird bit hanging off Nevada? It was so Nevada would have access to the deeper parts of the Colorado River. Laughlin was intended to be the state port but was quickly overshadowed by Bullhead City, Arizona across the river.

BAHAHAHAHA! AHAHAAAAA! YOU HAVE NO IDEA! BAHAHAA.. I work for an insurance company.. someone misreading "warhammer 40K to mean 40,000 models" is a SMALL error compared to what I see coming past my desk sometimes. I swear to the gods some people who work in insurance companys (myself excluded, naturally) are just dumb as rocks.

I'm sure that Insurance, as in any industry, the grunt work is handled by the cheapest labor possible. When you have data entry at the submitting and processing ends done by minimally qualified people you are bound to have mistakes.
A friend of mine, in an old Ford, was hit by a high end Mercedes. Both he and the other driver had the same insurance company and the other driver was from a "No Fault Insurance" state. My friend was sent a check for repairs based on the estimate for the Mercedes, which was more than the cost of the current year of his car.

So your single order was slow. I've had plenty that weren't. Further, spend the 250 pounds (make a group order if you have to) and you usually have it within 5 days. We put one in today, about 20 minutes ago. I expect it'll probably arrive by Saturday, depending if they process it today or not. Will update when it gets here.

I love seeing those ones show up, where a really expensive moron car (the kind of driver who would think the dreadknight shunt is a super win move that will make lots of friends) gets totally torn to bits by a really old poop heap car. It fills me with happiness, and then I realize I'm doing insurance and my soul turns a bit more to the gods of Chaos..
