Hey people. I picked up this fig like a year ago off ebay just because I loved the model. I tried out some new techniques on this guy. The metal was lots of different rusty colored washes with a very severe highlight. I didn't blend it at all because I really like the sharp shiny edge it gives things.

He was so much fun to paint I decided to do an ork army. I ordered a BF, some nobz, some stormboyz, and boss Zagstruk. Those should keep me busy for awhile. I'm gonna do Goff clan because I like the way black and white sets off the green skin. I'm envisioning lots of truk mounted boyz and nobz, with bikes, loads of stormboyz, and kommandos. Maybe a group of killa kans or two, and a deff dread. As I get stuff painted I will post it.

Gork or Mork I suspect. Thats one nice paint job and I love the green skin tone, so much more convincing than most orks I generally see.

Really pretty, but just one criticism, coming from a Goff player:
Da Goffz don't use da trukks ta get round da fighty places! We'z da biggest an' baddest Orks in da Ooniverse, an' we walks everywheres coz we ain't scared of nuffink; and anyway, our mobs can't fit in no trukks anywayz! A WAAAGH! of Goffs ridin about in dere wagons, bah humbug; you'z mukkin' about!

Excellent looking figure and I agree with the praise for the skin tone. Could you let us know how you did it please?

The skin tone is fairly easy.
1. Black primer.
2.Orkhide shade basecoat over all skin.
3. Knarloc green over all the skin but for the very deep recesses ie. between fingers, deep muscle grooves etc.
4. Goblin green over skin (thin layers, blending away from highest point of muscle) leave recesses darker greens.
5.goblin green, golden yellow, and bleached bone (put a little yellow and bone together, then add twice as much green). You want this very thin, lots of layers to get an opaque highlight. This adds a "transparency" to the skin it's almost like seeing the darker colors through the yellow.
6. Same three colors as above but reversed.....yellow and bone...then half as much green. Again...very very thin paint...multi layers.
7. pure bleached bone.....very very very thin paint...4 to 1 water to paint. Just the tips of ears, eyebrows, etc.
8. the bottom lips is gob green, and dark red mixed....add bone to highlight, this is the same as the arm area where the tubes are going in.

These colors are not wetblended by the way. Just thin enough to show the colors beneath.

You could easily do troops in a truncated fashion with these colors. knarloc green, then shade with a wash. Add a little yellow to the goblin green then hightlight....and a little bone to that then highlight...much quicker. This would pry take about 20 min per mini...instead of the 2 hours i spent on this guy (just for the skin)

Great looking models, did you use the full version of your Ork skin tone for these or the truncated one (as in http://www.lounge.belloflostsouls.net/showpost.php?p=130060&postcount=8 )?

James, I went full bore on these guys, using the process I told about earlier. It is very time consuming, but it sure makes an outstanding looking force when you are finished. Usually I can't stand "dumbing down" a paint scheme just because I have a lot of stuff to paint. I posted the truncated version for those who don't have the time, patience, or skill to go all out on them. I do stand by that secondary scheme though, I bet that they would look really good too.

Ghazkghkull Mag Uruk Thraka, this is the new finecast version. The one I got was terrible. TONS of mold lines. Some as offset as 1/32 of an inch. He required lots of sanding and filling. The paint job turned out pretty well though. The brass is a new set of colors for me, I used Old Bronze, brown ink, and tarnished brass all from reaper master series. The tone is really nice, and much more realistic than the GW equivalents.

I sure do love my walkers. This baby has been hounding me for about a week and a half. It was a real challenge to paint. Usually I paint all of one color on the whole model before moving on to the next. IE. paint all the flesh, paint all the metal, paint all the cloth, etc. This guy was so massive I basically finished whole section, taped em off, then moved on to the next. IE. front faceplate, legs, arm 1, arm 2, exhausts, etc. Gonna do a stompa one of these days now that I have that technique working for me.

And for those who follow my guard, gonna have some sweet pieces coming up in the next month or so. I bought a new chimera with the chapterhouse studios wheeled conversion kit. Ebay also surprised me today. I bid on a Valdor tank, and a Malcador with battlecannon. I put up a bit of 89 dollars each, just on a lark, not expecting to win them. I got em each for 79. What a frigging steal.

I love these. The blacks are superbly done and the highlights on them subtle enough to keep it looking black, whilst still being prominent enough to be noticed. Good balance there. The rust and vergidis is nicely done as well, without going OTT.

There is just one thing missing a bit imo, and that is some mud and dirt. Obviously, if it's rusty, there should be dirt. Dust and mud is also the first thing you get on you as you enter a battlefield... So without it, it looks a little off to me. That's about the only thing I can give that remotely resembles constructive critisism. :D

I very much enjoy this plog. :)

Thanks for the CC Elmir. There is a method to my madness though. I kept the effects very subtle on this model. I kept the dirt effects low key because of this guys size. I feel that you can do to much weathering, especially on a large model. I used tamiya weathering master grease color on all the black metal and checkerboards. It is very subtle, but I didn't want the weathering to take over the whole picture. You are right though, I may add a bit more dust.

Also finished my Big Mek with his Kustom Force Field Generator. I don't like the GW version. The simple fact is that the FF generator is not big enough, nor is it Orky enough for me. So I cobbled this together from some leftovers from planetstrike buildings and some string lol. Sorry my pics are a bit fuzzy. I just couldn't seem to get it all in focus.

:( I always feel bad when I see people painting this well. I could never paint this well and it annoys me. I want to paint that well, and if I had the conectration I could. But I always speed paint or do bog basic stuff instead of doing what I could do. But that is great work. And it makes me want to try harder to oull of great paintjobs :)

TheRise, I hope you find some inspiration in my stuff. It took a long time and a lot of practice to get to this point. I started painting minis in about...1986? God...that seems like forever ago lol. I painted dnd miniatures by the hundreds, dozens of dragons, monster, etc. I didn't get into warhammer until about 1999. I painted one fantasy army, tons of mordheim stuff, all while still painting dnd minis. I finally found my niche in 2000 when I got my first 40k minis. I find them the most fun to paint and collect, and that's what keeps me going. I'm telling you all this just to say...If you love it, keep doing it, you WILL get better. It took me a quarter of a century. There is no reason to feel bad.

You made me think of concentration. I think I actually paint better when not concentrating to hard. I listen to music, and sing along. Or, as of late, audio books. Maybe you just have to find that sweet spot in your head where you can just paint without over worrying it. Concentration gets to me sometimes too.

Ha that's how I am. I can't really concentrate on any painting or else I over do it with too much paint or screw up doing lines.

Your Big Mek looks really great by the way, I'll have to show my buddy it since he want's 2 for his army but doesn't want 2 of the exact same model. Your stuff is an inspiration man and I can't really thank you enough.

Entered my first Golden Demon competition this year! I put in my stormboyz (posted earlier in this thread) and a malcador tank (pics will be forthcoming). I didn't think I would do worth a crap. Made first cut with both, but didn't take home a demon. I am still very pleased. There was some VERY stiff competition across all categories.
Lot's of beautiful work. Congratulations to all the winners! Oh, gratz to Jawaballs too for his banner! Pictures on the web won't do justice to his beautiful banner.
