View Full Version : The "I Want an Army!" Challenge

Rules –
Imagine that you are given $300 USD to build a new army. You have the task of selecting the different kits and blisters that you are going to use in the creation of your new army. To play you must write out an itemized list of the models you would purchase and submit an army list. You don’t have to worry about tax, just use the pre-tax sales price. There is a $5 leeway on the budget, in case you write out a list and find yourself just a bit over. If you happen not to live in America but still wish to play simply use the US Games Workshop to find the costs so you don’t have to do any of that cost conversion stuff.

-You don’t have to worry about paint, glue, or any of the other costs associated with modeling and painting. Assume that you already have these materials.

-You have to buy individual character models in your costs list. (Yes I know that you can convert, but realistically some armies don’t have the option of converting a character out of a basic troop squad. Ex: Demon Bloodthirster, Tyranid Hive Tyrant, etc. It keeps it fair.)

-There is no benefit to not using all the money in the budget, although those found to be over will lose 1 bonus point.

Scoring –
-You will receive points based on the size of the final list:
0pts to 850pts = 0 bonus points
850pts to 1000pts = 5 bonus points
1000pts to 1250pts = 7 bonus points
1250pts to 1500pts = 10 bonus points
1500pts to 1750pts = 13 bonus points
1750pts to 1850pts = 15 bonus points
1850pts to 2000pts = 18 bonus points
2000pts+ = 20 bonus points (with an additional bonus point for each 100pts over 2000pts)

-Each unit is only allowed 4 upgrade options to try and limit people abusing upgrades to get to higher points levels.

-Certain armies obviously require more models so “horde armies” receive bonus points. Any Imperial Guard, Ork, or Tyranid army receives 3 bonus points.

-GW really promotes the use of their battle forces when building an army however just about everyone knows how almost every battle force outside of the Space Marines ones are a garbage mish-mash of models that are hard to fully incorporate into a list. Any non-Space Marine army using a battle force receives 1 bonus point for each battle force box in their list.

Composition –
You must follow the FOC. Lists must include at least 1 HQ choice and 2 Troops choices. Additional bonus points will be awarded for the following:
-Included 1 Elites, Fast Attack, and Heavy Support choice (must have 1 of each) = 5 bonus points
-Each additional unit (HQ, Troop, Elite, Fast Attack, or Heavy Support after rounding out the FOC with the bonus listed above. Transports don’t count) = 2 bonus points
-Included at least 5 units with armor values (transports count) = 2 bonus points
-Included at least 2 monstrous creature units = 2 bonus points
-Included at least 6 anti-tank weapons (Ranged weapons w/ S8 or higher) = 2 bonus points
-Included a named character (upgrade characters do not count) = 1 bonus point

Lists that are judged competitive by myself or other posters will receive bonus points. This is done by selecting the quote tags and listing the players name and the competitive like the example:

Eagleboy's List = Competitive. +1 bonus point
Each player who credits your list as being competitive will earn you 1 bonus point.

Follow this example below to get the form for your post –

Reward -
The winner of this challenge will receive 1 character blister from the GW range – up to $25 in value. Ex: Vulkan, Skulltaker, Eldrard, etc. The winner will be PM’d by me at the conclusion of this challenge so I can get your contact information. I’ll purchase it through the GW site and just use your address for the shipping so that I can get around purchasing it myself in person and then paying twice as much to ship it via FedEx or something.

If we come up with something that needs to be FAQ's into this challenge it will be included in a further post. The challenge will conclude on April 20th at midnight.

Strangely enough, this list is pretty similar to my current tournament list!

Edit: I removed the Changeling. I forgot there is actually a GW model for him now, and I just use a different colored Horror in my army. It doesn't affect my bonus points at all - it's only a 5 point model.

Would Assault on Black Reach count? I'd imagine that the AOBR kit would give you an extremely good return on investment, and probably beat out any other possible approach.

Just off the top of my head, 2 AOBR kits, 1 Land Raider kit and 2 Land Speeders would get most of the bonus points you listed, plus have a very high point total (I'll put together a list). It would be a reasonably competitive list, too, though the wargear options may not be ideal.

Edit:
Here's the list

Purchase:
2 Assault on Black Reach ($180)
2 Land Speeders ($60)
1 Land Raider ($62)

Total= $302 (with $5 leeway)

Army List
2x Chapter Masters, Relic Blades Artificer Armor, Hellfire Rounds, Digital Weapons....380

10 Terminators.......400

2x Dreadnought, Extra Armor......240

2x 10 Tactical Marines, Flamer, Missile Launcher, Sgt w/ Meltabombs, Teleport Homer....240

2x Land Speeders, Multi Melta, Typhoon Missile Launcher....200

Land Raider, Storm Bolter, Multi-Melta, Extra Armor....285

Total: 1905

That's:
1850-2000pts (18pts)
5 vehicles (2pts)
Unit in every FA category (5pts)
7 more than the minimum requirements (14pts)
>6 Anti Tank weapons (2pts)

Total=41pts

Edit:
If need be, you could switch out the AoBR kit for the SM battle force, they cost the same. You don't get quite as many points out of it, though.

Quick question do all of the options need to be in the kit you buy. Cus in that case the Tau list above is illegal, you only get 1 missle per fish kit, and no smart missle systems. Nor do the kits listed give as many marker drones listed, hed get 2 drones total :p

If he doesnt need all the upgrades in the kit, then good list.

Gir

Smimicm, I would argue that you have way to many drones for what you bought (Espically marker drones), and the battleforces to not come with Pathfinders.

Also, to the first list posted, your list is illegal. I was going to hijack it and fix it, but I'll point out instead that you need to "pay for" the Changeling.

Wait, so the "have 1 of each FoC slot" is a requirement for the bonuses? Baaaack to the drawing board.

And don't worry. Necrons are too awesome to be constrained by a FoC. :P

2x Battleforce
Lord
Nightbringer
2x Flayed Ones
Tomb Spyder
Warriors Set

Lord w/ Viel, Res Orb & Warcythe (210)

Nightbringer (360)

4 Flayed Ones w/ Disruption fields (84)

68 Warriors divided into 6 units all w/Disruption Fields (1360)

7 Scarabs w/Disruption Fields (112)

5 Destroyers (250)

Tomb Spyder (55)

Included 1 Elites, Fast Attack, and Heavy Support choice 5pts
Each additional unit 14pts
2 Monstrous Creatures 2pts

That's the highest total so far but about as competitive as kitchen knife in a sniper battle.

Well, you telling me my Eldar list was wrong made me fix it. The new version has all FoC types, and is 43 points instead of 42. :D

And that eldar list has over 400 points for 34$.

EDIT: Hmm, the Tau list has Fire Warriors that "count as" Pathfinders, hence the ton of extra points. Is that allowed? If so, you can do some naughty things, like taking normal (ad much cheaper) Space Marines and having them be a GK successor chapter. Or have Necron Warriors count as Immortals.

CHALLENGE FAQ #1

-You must fit within the FOC, if you use battleforces or anything else and find that you have more units than you can take legally they won't count. For those already posting you are free to go back and adjust your list to reflect this.

-Since there is a prize up for grabs I think there should be a limit on the number of lists, I'll go with Darklink as a precedent and say you can post 3
.
-Since certain races don't really have the option of proxying / converting certain kits for other kits (In the real world you could use fire warriors as pathfinders but you could never use gaunts as gargoyles) you must include the GW product in your army.

-If you include unit upgrade characters in your army, you must include the GW product. For upgrade character that are not supported by the GW range insert a $20 charge in your list.

-For models not supported by the GW range, insert the cost of the base model and assume that the master converter can fix it (chimera = hydra in cost). For models with no conversion precedent, like the Dark Eldar airplanes, assume that GW will price them like the Storm Raven and Vendetta kits ($66)

-You need 1 HQ, 1 Elites, 2 Troop, 1 Fast Attack, and 1 Heavy Support in your list before you can count addtional units. These 6 units do not count outside the bonus for achieving a wel rounded FOC (Number of total units in your list minus six then multplied by two will give you your unit bonus points aka (X-6) x 2 = Unit Bonus Points)

-The first person to post a list will get credit for it. No repeat lists. You need different kits! Different wargear options on the same list is still the same list for the purposes of this challenge.

-You only get 1 bonus point for included a named character. If you include 2 or more named characters you still only get 1 bonus point. Upgrade characters do not count as named characters.

-There is no limit to the number of times a poster can tag someone for having a compettive list. However each poster may only tag each list once.
-Assault on Black Reach will not give you a bonus point for having a battleforce.

-More to come later probably....

Yeah I was gonna say that was a damn shame if they got rid of him. Although your run-of-the-mill captains, librarians, and chaplains look better than a majority of the special character range.

Do you get all those heavy weapons in the Devastator Box? I thought it only came with enough to make a single plasma cannon, missile launcher, lascannon, and heavy bolter? And don't the scouts that come with the battleforce only give you the heavy bolter?

Useing USD prices. (Since $300 CAD would not go as far with CAD prices. XD)

But yah. I did this with Orks before they Raised the prices on Ork regimets.

Two Ork Battle Forces, two Ork Regiments(The old ones with 20 boyz), a Box of Nobs, and 4 Packs of Round Infantry Bases. It's abit over the 300 price limit, but gives you:

Two Trucks, converted Nob Bikers squad + Converted Warboss on bike, Converted Big Mec, 80 Boys. (The 40 from the two battle forces, and 40 converted using left over weapons the bases I bought.)

Orks are a great budget army if done right.

Sadly ork regiments went up in price with there repackaging, and now 40k Ork boyz are cheaper then fantasy ones.

Either you have to many HQ's, or Heamonculi are multiple units to a slot, and if they are, you only get points for one additional HQ I believe (As bonus points are for "slots", not choices)

I have another option, but I'm not sure people would allow it, since it means turning the Dreadnought from the Black Reach box into a Looted Wagon. I mean, I've seen Looted Carnifexes before, but yeah. If that IS allowed, join two Killa Kans together and add the wagon as HS. That would grant the 2 points from 5+ armored units, and 1 more for 2.7k points. However, that would be stretching the rules too much.

EDIT: If you really want to spend more money, get a painboy for the nobz. I left it out because it doesn't really make a difference.

I'm not sure about "additional units," the way it's worded looks like it only applies if you have a unit in each FO slot first. But if it's just for 1HQ 2 troops then, I have an additional 12 points.

Extra points for Battleforces kind of sucks for an army without a battleforce of any sort. But at least anyone facing this would be 100% scared pantsless if I were to put either of those webways down on their lines.

FAQ #2
-You recieve bonus points for filling up FOC slots. Thus the most bonus points that you can gain in this way is 22 (1 HQ, 2 Elites, 4 Troops, 2 Fast Attack, 2 Heavy Support) Like said before transports do not count. Armies that can include addtional units (Demons w/ Heralds, Space Wolves w/ their crazy 4 HQ choices, choices that never count against your FOC chart) cannot gain bonuses in that way. You can still spend the points for army size but you will not gain an addtional bonus point for extra units. This is to balance out the differences between the races somewhat.

3 Man snap fit Marine Box

Not sure those thunderwolves fit the FAQ eagleboy made, but I have to support you in that it seems reasonable. Bloodcrushers are equivalent miniatures to Thunderwolves.

Where are those 3 man snap fit marines? It seems like a nice buy. I plan on building a GK army, and want to get a GK box and mix it up with normal marines. Would that be cheaper than normal squads?

I hate to tell you this Lemt but you've probably broken the "Each unit is only allowed 4 upgrade options to try and limit people abusing upgrades to get to higher points levels." rule. All nobz get their upgrades seperately which means you can have 4 upgrades total. Also 'ard boyz are a unit upgrade for boyz, regardless of what army builder says. Between those 2 you've probably gained about 1000 points in your list total.

If you want waaagh banners you have to buy the model http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catalog/productDetail.jsp?catId=cat1490653&prodId=prod1130275 That's going to put you a little bit over budget I think...

Also I thought you had to work with the limitations of the models so if a kit only comes with 1 of something then if you want 2 you need multiple kits. Can someone clarify that one beause if that's not the case then I might be gaining some more points on my wolves...

Dammit you're right. :(

As for converted models, here's the relevant FAQ entry:
-For models not supported by the GW range, insert the cost of the base model and assume that the master converter can fix it (chimera = hydra in cost). For models with no conversion precedent, like the Dark Eldar airplanes, assume that GW will price them like the Storm Raven and Vendetta kits ($66)
So as long as there's no official miniature for what you want, you can just use basic miniatures.

Well, my entry is non-valid, so I'll try to think of something else.

The list I put up earlier, you could ligitimatly with no converting build that, this makes assumptions that you are converting nearly every option which doesn't exist. So for this reason regardless of whether it's legal under the competition rules I am NOT putting this list up for consideration. It's more here to prove that if you bend the rules as much as possible you can do some really silly things, and also to stop anyone else from typing this up.

List of models needed:

Logan
Ragnar
Nijal
Lucas
Rune Priest
Devestator Box
Thunderwolf Cavalry
3x Wolf Pack
2x Snap fit marine sets

Total Cost $301.75

List-
Logan, Ragnar, Nijal (760)

Rune Priest (220)
Master of Runes, Plasma Pistol, Runic Armour, Saga of the Warrior Born

3x Lone Wolf (3x85=255)
Thunder Hammer, Storm Shield, Melta Bombs

5x 5 Wolf Guard (5x190=950)
4 Thunder Hammers

5 Blood Claws (265)
Lucas, Plasma Gun, Plasma Pistol, Power Fist

3x Thunderwolf Cavalry (3x115=445)
Thunder Hammer, Storm Shield, Melta Bombs

2x 3 Long Fangs (145x2=290)
2x Lascannons, 2x Power Fist

3 Long Fangs (115)
2x Missile Launchers, 2x Power Fist

Total Points 3300

That means in total I'm up to 63 points, which I cannot believe is beatable now, unless I've missed something really silly. But like I said at the top I hope that someone comes out an faq's this list to being impossible somehow.

You guys are really making me jealous. In the land of OZ our battle force sets alone are $150 each. For Eldar characters are $24 aus and elites $55.00 per box for eldar anyway. Bigger models range between $65 and $85 making it impossible to field anything more than a basic 500 point army. The killer is $25 for each wraithguard unless you catch a spercial. For the conversion rate on these knock off about 5% to get the US $ equivalent. And I believe the poor Kiwi's pay even more. The trick is shopping outside of GW for discounts.

Ironically a lot of it relates to government import duties rather than just GW pricing. And that is really rude considering they don't have any equivalent industry to protect here.
