What happens when a Daemon is banished to the warp, or killed, or dismembered?
I had always thought they burn up- like the daemons in DOOM 3, or else were sucked back into the warp or something.
Now there are 'dead' daemon bodyparts available on the GKs. There also used to be a Wulfen holding a daemonette head.
What do you think happens to a daemons body when it is killed

I always thought that they were like a balloon filled with liquid energy and when you killed them they just went POP, But I guess that is wrong and they are just meat and bone like you and me.

They are made of warp-stuff, but who knows how long it takes to dissolve/decompose back into the warp? Minutes, hours days? Regardless, enough time for some Grey Knight to cut a daemon-ho's head off (http://www.games-workshop.com/MEDIA_CustomProductCatalog/m1710156a_99120107002_GreyKnights01_873x627.jpg)an d wave it around making 'whoop whoop' noises.

I'd say in many cases the physical form of a deamon comes from elements found in "reality", depending on how long they've been out of The Warp. A recently summoned one doesn't have much matter to form themselves and would fall apart quickly after "death" but one that's been around for awhile has eaten (let's not ask what) and used stuff from the material universe to form a more lasting body*.

Think it's more like "Tonight I'm gonna get me some head!" spoken with a redneck accent

That's dirty. I love it.

I always thought it depended on how the daemon came into our reality.
If comming directly into our reality: through a rift etc, then their physical form should kind of burn up, dissolve or whatever.
If they entered through posession: then they alter the form of the being itself, causing the possed to take on the physical appearance the daemon prefers. Then when killed, many of these are the source of the trophies carried by those that killed them.

I thought of something like that, but then I remembered Space Marines are chemically sterilised so unlikely to be interested.

Just because they've been chemically sterilized doesn't mean they've forgotten their fraternity ways. They might not be able to perform anymore but that has never stopped men from doing tasteless jokes.

There is an old axiom, which goes "Never put down to malicious intent what can easily be explained away as stupidity."
I'm reminded of the Chaos trophy rack bit that had a Necron head on it. According to the fluff, that would be completely impossible, since every last trace of the Necrons disappears from the battlefield when they phase out, including the "dead." I think that demonette head falls into the same category - aesthetically appealing to some, but completely out of step with established canon.

The banner pole for the metal Ork dreadnought has a Necron head on it as well.
Maybe Tech-Priests, Dark Mechanicus and Mekboyz all make a bit of money on the side by crafting fake daemon and Necron trophies for warriors who've killed them but are annoyed that they haven't got any remains to stick on their spiked armour or wave around in combat?
On a more serious note, there are some abilities and weapons which destroy daemons even more than usual. Either an FAQ or a designer's commentary for Dark Heresy says that the Holocaust psychic power - which fries daemons - doesn't just attack the physical body, it attacks the soul of the target as well, destroying them permanently if enough damage is done. So if a daemon was hit by something like that, they wouldn't just fade/ pop/ burst with an "I won't be banished forever, hahaha!", they'd be gone forever.
The FAQ or commentary went on to say that daemons really hate/ fear people with that psychic power as it's one of the few things that can permanently destroy them.

According to the Grey Knights novel: "A daemon's banishment was a complicated concept. The strength of the daemon, the method of banishment and sheer luck determined how long the daemon would have to languish in the warp. Mandulis [a Grey Knight hero of yore] must have dealt Ghargatuloth [Tzeentch daemon prince but the name has always made me think of a huge alien fat guy for some reason] a feel blow indeed to banish the daemon for a thousand years."
However, I'm fairly sure I've read in other 40k sources that it is nearly always 1,001 years or 1,000 years and a day or something very similar. Like a lot of fluff, I think how the process of banishment works is determined a) partly by the needs of the plot; and b) whether the author remembers what GW's canon on the issue is.
Also, I mentioned something about the Holocaust psychic power which one of the Dark Heresy author/ design team had mentioned. Now I haven't read the new Grey Knights codex and have no idea if the following still fits in with the fluff for whatever Holocaust does in 40K these days but AFAIK it still fits in with what it does in DH:
"Holocaust- The wounds caused by Holocaust can only be healed by time, psychic abilities do squat to restore them. That may seem harsh, but consider this: Daemons generally laugh at most mortals, including the bulk of psykers. Even if you are such a badass that you can take a daemon on with a reasonable expectation of killing it and surviving the fight, the corrupt ******* is laughing at you because all you're doing is destroying its manifested form and banishing it back to the warp where it will spend the next century or so contemplating the horrors it will visit upon your family line for the next umpteen generations.
Holocaust burns spirit as well as flesh: anything killed by a Holocaust is warp-dead as well as physically dead. Psykers that can manifest Holocaust scare the **** out of daemons...
...not necessarily a good thing, but big bragging rights, eh?"
I got this from http://www.darkreign40k.com/drjoomla/index.php/psionics/psychic-powers/588-lets-talk-about-psykers-shall-we for those that want to see what else the article says. Well worth a read for DH players & GM.

I was a little confused by this as well. It looks like when they got rid of daemonic instability in the rules, the daemons in the fluff became a lot more real. Now the GK have to make pyres to get rid of them and the daemon has to petition for a new body. This raises a lot of uncomfortable questions about janitorial duties.
By the way, has anyone seen a model for Ail'Slath'Sleresh? How awesome would a Keeper of Secrets wearing an Eldar avatar's skin look? He's all rocking the House of a Thousand Corpses look with magma skin!

Oh dear Emperor of Terra.. can you imagine a frat house full of 8 foot tall superhumans drinking themselves silly (which even a space marine can do.. after 10 or 12 keggers) and going "whoo! lets get some eldar hookers!" and then realizing they're all impotent? Drunken impotence rage..

And that's how the Horus Heresy started.
