That is an amazing cover! But I honestly wish there were not as many shots at authors and designers.
They have a job at GW or Black Library. And none of the detractors do, that means something.

I don't like Gav Thorpe's Space Marine writing. You're going to bemoan that fact? Have you listened to Raven's Flight? Corax spends a quarter of the story crying. Compare that to how badass Corax is in The First Heretic. Have you read Thorpe's Space Hulk novella? It's awful.

I've not read Path of the Warrior or any of his WHFB Elf stuff. Maybe he's improved. I'm not holding my breath.

path of the warrior was pretty good, could have been better, but hey, that is how a lot of books turn up :)

corax was pretty bad *** in the first heretic.

His Angels of Darkness was great, his Path of the Warrior was pretty cool, his Malekith and Shadow King were epic, and his Angry Robot Crown Of The Blood is one of the best fantasy novels I've read in the last 12 months.

If you don't like Thorpe then be prepared to be disappointed as he's doing a load more Astartes books in the future.

See... Everything I've ever read about Angels of Darkness is the exact opposite. I've not read anything good about it. Again, Space Hulk is AWFUL. Abysmal.

If Thorpe was one of their better Astartes authors, he'd have written a Horus Heresy book LONG ago.

And define "a load more Astartes books." The only one on the announced docket thusfar is Deliverance. Hardly a load.

He's doing one of the Primarch novellas in the HH novella anthology The Primarchs (4 novellas in one book), as well as a prologue to Deliverance Lost in the Age of Darkness HH short story anthology.

He's starting a Dark Angels series as well.

Well Ben counter got to be a part of the HH series and he isn't one of the better BL authors so it's not like they're infallible when it comes to choosing the right authors to be a part of the HH series.
And really you've only heard bad things about Angels of Darkness? See I've never heard heard bad things about it (plus I've read it more than once and I think it's at least as good as anything Nick Kyme has written).

If it's for Sanguinius, I'm going to cry. Only Abnett should write Sanguinius.

See, I'd guess that James Swallow would be doing any Sanguinius book.

As for Thorpe; he didn't even write the Dark Angels books for the Horus Heresy. Angels of Darkness couldn't have been that good if he wasn't tasked to write those.

Well I think Angels of Darkness is a good read, and other than you I've not heard anyone else who thinks poorly of it, like I said it's at least as good as Kyme's Salamander efforts without even being his best novel (whereas Kyme's books all seem to be 'meh' except for his Salamander novels which are decent enough without being as good as Abnett, Bowden, or McNeill).

Of course he might have been asked before and he had to turn them down because he was already writing other stuff, that's one possiblity at least.

Any way he is going to be writing DA stuff for the HH, I believe he'll be the one doing the 3rd book for the current DA arc (though I'm not 100% on that).

Sandy Mitchell is a great writer but he hasn't been asked to participate in the HH series, or are you going to say the Ciaphas Cain series is crap as well?

Gav Thorpe won't be doing Sanguinius in The Primarchs, he's doing the Lion.
Nick Kyme will do Ferrus Manus, Rob Sanders Alpharius/Omegon, and Graham McNeill will be doing a novella about Fulgrim.

Sandy Mitchell doesn't write Marines. Neither does CL Werner. I've actually got Thorpe's Kadillus book on my nightstand; maybe it'll change my mind. As it stands, my only experience with him writing marines is Space Hulk, and that was an abortion of a novella.

Sadly Kadillus will be a disappointment, despite being a fan of Thorpe's other works that book is apparently one of the worst Space Marine Battles books so far published. I've not read it myself though, I'm just going off the reviews I've seen.

I've read it and in opinion it is the worst Space Marine Battles book published so far.

I started it last night and....well, it's not looking good so far. Why the eff does Thorpe feel like he has to put game terms (overwatch!!!) in his novels.

Overwatch isn't just a game term, it's the correct military term for the actions that are accomplished with the Overwatch rules.

Really? Man, when they say, "I'm going on overwatch," it just sounds so damned cheezy.

It's because we're used to it as a rule's name.

If you picked up the book with no knowledge of that particular game mechanic it probably wouldn't sound as bad.
