Reading today's article on the tyranid deathstar, it mentions the the tyrant guard form a retinue for the tyrant. A quick look through the nid dex shows that it doesn't clearly say that the unit is a retinue, even though one would think it would be. This just leads to the weird wording of the retinue rule, where any bodyguard or the like is considered a retinue. So my question is, is the tyrant guard a retinue, and if so what else is? A command squad maybe?

It doesn't use the word retinue. Nothing does anymore. Works the same, though.

And, no, command squads are not retinues. 'nidz have a specific rule that specifies that the tyrant guard prevent the tyrant from being picked out in cc. Command squads and the like have no such rule.

also, to clarify, the FAQ for Tyranids makes the obvious crystal clear that the Tyrant cannot be picked out by enemy units.

Retinue was an old wording in several codexes that made it so that certain models could essentially make themselves a part of a squad in exchange for their Independant Character status until the rest of the squad died. Inquisitors, Sisters of Battle and Grey Knights, and many other 3rd and 4th edition codexes still have that rule. Current Guard units don't have quite the same thing, as their squad characters are never considered independant characters and must be purchased with the squad. Tyranids are the only 5th edition codex that still has this rule or something like it.
