So, I assume everyone has by now seen and heard of the inclusion of the Carchadon chapter of space marines in Forge World's Badab war series of books. This seems to be the replacement name for the Space Sharks that have been mention for almost as long as 40k players have been getting drunk and then naming chapters.

For some, this was a horrible blow to their fansense. For others it was just a silly misuse of latin and an excuse to put out a equally silly (but still epic) terminator model.

However recently the Deathwatch RPG released a little book called Rites of Battle. In this book there is a section on both successor chapters, various deeds and accomplishments credited to specific chapters, and rules for creating your own custom made chapter during character generation.

Now in at least three separate places in this book they specifically mention Space Sharks. Not Carchadons, not Marines with teeth like sharks, nor even Megalodons and giant octopi.

So, what does this mean overall? Well, if DW is as semi canon as any Black Library novel then it means the Space Sharks live on. It also means someone at Fantasy Flight Games likes the name too.

So, responses, thoughts, pointless heckling that proves you're not as good as me?

Hell, way I see it, even Imperial Armour 10 says that they're called by both names in different Imperial records, depending on dialects, High/Low Gothic, etc..
Either way, I like their style!

Yeah, IA 10 says they're also known as Space Sharks.

Ah okay I did not know that they hadn't done more than change their heraldry and given them an alternative name. I was under the impression they were being semi written out of the fluff and was just kind of shocked to see multiple references to them in an RPG book.

Still, kind of nifty they get mentioned multiple times instead of more 'mainstream' chapters like the blood ravens or 'insert color' templars.

Carcharodon is Greek (from karcharos meaning sharp or jagged and odous meaning tooth), and the Genus name for the Megaladon and Great White sharks.
Their ship the Nicor is a type of old English sea dragon.
