View Full Version : Knight Warden - Household Lord - WIP

So, for the 3k Narrative at BoLSCon, for a few games I'd like to change it up and put in some of the more-obscure supre-heavies. Thus, I decided on a Knight Warden Household.

The Wardens were, IMHO, the worst of the Knight models. I felt they needed serious re-imagining. I decided to try to use all-GW bits to build them (quite a challenge) and to re-imagine it, with just a pinch of battle-tech and a dash of FW Warhound. A bit more ornate than the subsequent 2 will be, I present the mostly-finished Household Lord. It still needs heraldry, highlights, and touch-ups, but it's mostly done.

Note on Backstory: These Knights are from House Marius, painted as they were while attached to Legio Crucius' Demi-Legio during the Third War for Armageddon. They've been in the Ash-Wastes are while, and although I plan to add some more highlights and a bit of drybrushing, the grungy, acid-rain-induced look will stay.
Note on Pictures: Physically, it's a lot less top-heavy than it seems in the pictures.

Feedback?

That is exactly how I imagined the nights to be in the start of Mechanicus, a baby mars pattern warhound titan. I can't believe you did most of that with GW parts. Would it be possible for you to give out a parts list?

Thanks. I figured a bit of FW Warhound, a bit of Battletech Vulture/Mad Dog was a good combination.

To build one you will need:
1 - Valkyrie (most of the kit)
2 - Defiler claws (full set) +2 armor plates from the legs
3 - 4x Razorback turret plates (the part that replaces the Rhino top-doors)
4 - 2x Razorback twin-linked heavy bolter turrets
5 - Powerplant and Multi-laser power-box from IG Sentinel
6 - Plasticard, super-glue, green/grey stuff, cutter, snips, etc.
7 - Dragon Forge Designs 120mm base (optional)

The only thing I would change is it's "hips". I would build the legs into the main chassis a little more.

Thanks for the tip. I'd like to have figured out something better, but all the playing around I did produced this as the best compromise that didn't look wonky (and didn't require lots more plasticard work.) Maybe I'll figure out something better for the next 2.

It looks wicked, but as it has been mentioned, you could worked on the hips a little more. But it's a great concept, and I approve because I am a huge Mechwarrior fanboy. 40k + Mechwarrior = life complete.

Something like the Catapult:

Because in-game it's armament is a Missile Launcher and a machine gun...

Wow. Just...wow.

I can definitely see the BattleTech/MechWarrior influence (that being the first "miniatures" game I ever played) and it looks fantastic.

Looks excellent, a really impressive and original conversion!

That said it does look a little unbalanced in a way if you'll forgive the critism, I'm not quite sure how exactly but maybe if the hull was slightly lower with the legs slightly wider spaced and further back along the hull? Perhaps kinda below the area where the Valk's door vision slits are mounted?

You guys have inspired me. I will definitely try to rework the legs a bit. Not sure how I'll do it, but there's got to be a way.

Sorry to be a downer, it does look pretty decent though. But, that is just not how a knight looks. Maybe if the Cockpit wasn't so far extended I wouldn't be as against it as I am. But it looks like you put a lot of thought and effort into it and the converting and paint is good. I just think of the Epic Knights, which are how Knights look. If you cut off the blue valkyrie part and everything just above it and fit a head like cockpit in there and put the torso and legs directly under the main body it would look much better. I should also have arms. Just some constuctive critisism don't take it personally. On most things against how it is supposed to be I would be defiant against it but you did a good enough job not to make me outright hate it.
Here are what a regular Knight looks like the first one is ok but the second one is amazing.

No offense taken. Can't please everyone.
Those are exactly what Knight Paladins (and Crusaders, and some others) look like. If it had been a Paladin or Lancer or otherwise, which have 40k-scale models (Armorcast, I believe?), I'd definitely have gone with your more traditional look.

Knight Wardens, however, look like this (top row): http://zachary.org/games/gw/epic8.jpg
In short, ugly, and very dissimilar to the others. The upper-left Warden is the one that the rules in Lords of Battle are based on, but up-close it looks like a hunch-back Tyranid more than any Imperial Titan.
That's why I gave myself such lee-way in the design. As it were, I wanted to re-imagine the ugly-duckling, if you will.

Thanks for the feedback! More ideas help on my subsequent models.

P.S. Love the Hockey-playing Marine in that second link!

I have to say if you where going for a paladin or lancer it would have been a big miss but as a Warden I think its huge improvement from what iots suppose to be , although if added weapon arms it would have been a total win IMO but thats just me . I love it otherwise and give it 2 thumbs up for conversion and paint job all in all its pretty darn sweet .

The first thing that came to my mind was, it's a shortend valkery on legs. I'm sorry i don't really like the model.
Like you said, this thing needs more detail, highlighting will improve the paintjob.
I am not a fan of the paintingscheme but i do like the fact of the acidic rain indused look. That came out nicely.

I see your point, I just think that the cockpit shouldn't be jutting out as much and that it should look like a head in some way. And also the legs should be under the main part.

I like the concept and the effort, but I agree that the hips need to be incorporated. It looks 'stuck on' rather than 'built'. Unfortunately, there's not an easy solution to that problem. If you do change the hips, be sure to post pictures. I'd love to see what kind of solution you come up with.

Well, I love the concept, and it is an extremely good job with the parts you've used;

Yup, no doubt you saw it coming:

However, it looks wrong, I can't pinpoint exactly what it is, but my suspicion is that the legs seem out of proportion with the torso, and the torso itself is too flat and large. Maybe a larger hip joint, for instance with the legs flaring out as they near the torso would make it look more balanced, but I suspect you'd need to downsize the torso to make it look right (in my eyes at least!)

And that would be no easy feat, it would probably need a plasticard version of the valkyrie at a smaller scale, which kind of defeats the whole concept! I can certainly see the valkyrie being used in other peoples titan conversion because of this though :) I'm not certain on the scale, I'd have to measure it up some time, but it looks like it might fit quite well as the basis of a warhound torso.

I will wait till you get it finished before I say too much but I think limiting yourself to those GW parts is probably your downfall. Paint job looks ace!

Downfall? I think maybe I didn't explain well enough up-front:
I wanted to use all GW parts. That was the challenge. I also really wanted to use the Valkyrie kit, as the cockpit fits very well with the Vulture/Mad Dog look I was going for.

The internet-standard of bionicle-mask and plasticard just doesn't do it for me.
I also didn't want to try to copy work that I know others (http://hearthguard.over-blog.com/pages/Vente_dun_knight_titan_sur_Ebay__Titan_knight_on_s ale_on_ebay-707287.html) have done (http://i89.servimg.com/u/f89/12/99/98/55/5122_110.jpg) much better ("http://www.tanksandtrolls.co.uk/40KPaladin%20Knight.htm) than I could do.

The hips needs armour plating.

That Knight is awesome!

i used to have a book on mech warrior mechs and that looks awesome but are you going to add arms...cause arms would complete the mech warrior look

Impressive work with pure GW parts.

I agree with the statements on the legs.

Keep up the good job!
