Ouch,

The dread is in line with the standard and Ironclad versions. and you get three options that can be combined with cheaper black reach dreads.

The storm raven is about 6% more than the valkyrie (based on UK price). I'm wondering if this foreshadows another round of price rises in June for the big centrepiece kits  :(. Price inflation is currently running about 5% in the UK so that wouldn't be surprising.

On the plus side it does look quite a bit better in these official pics. Still needs a bit of conversion work in some of the problem spots IMHO.

My plan is to:

Lower the wings about 1" so that the top of the engine cover is level with the roof.
Shift that dorsal vent so that it bulks up the skinny tail.
Add front stabilier fins to cover up the "wheel arches" at the front that look like they should have battlewagon tyres in them.

Other news: release date confirmed 5 Feb and the battleforce is also there (assault squad, tax squad, Death Co., Rhino). Only one Blood Angels box in that and a pretty boring selection but OK if you want to build a large force I guess.

I'm just gonna use a different top turret (probably a predator turret) and that top vent off ...
it'll looks awesome then.

Looks like I'll be ordering three of the bad boys to make my DoA list a bit punchier :P

Some people can't go to the GW website during the day. For their sake, here are the pictures:

Really liking the Stormraven now.

Why did they have to make that silly stubby hurrican bolter mount? The normal one off the crusader would have looked much better as it would actually have been able to shoot in front of the SR.

I quite like the Stormraven, I think I will be getting one (or two) and then I can retire my proxy models.

Interesting, the leaked pic from the website from a while back had the exposed side doors, then they aparently decided to cover them with the hurricane bolter bits.

I still think this is the most "toy-like" kit they have ever produced, and that its the top turret that does it. If you cover it up, the vehicle has a much cleaner and more "realistic" feel to it.

I'm putting Cobra stickers on mine :)

Well, that new Librarian Dreadnought seems amazing…

And Stormraven maybe doesn´t worth the price but I think will buy some

I wonder how will long it'll be before they let the other marine chapters use them? I'm sure if they did that they would sell a lot more of those $66 kits.

@bigred

arent the hurricane bolters optional, so if not included you have side doors?

Well, the BA battleforce thingy certainly dispels the assumption that GW weren't going to produce them any more. Long Live the Battleforce.

A 360-degree view of the Stormraven just went up on the GW website. Here's today's What's New Today link (http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/content/blogPost.jsp?aId=15100007a).

It's a piece of Thunderhawk with the sort-of tail of the F-4 Phantom and a little of the famous "Flying Boxcar" maybe thrown in. I like it well enough.

That's another value for money dread kit then :)

Remove top intake, replace hurricane bolter sponsons with the top turret guns. Bob's your Uncle.

Remove all the guns, paint brown - UPS 40k.

That's actually my plan for the kit (well, maybe not brown).

The back end doesn't look at all convincing. I really wish they designed it with twin tail booms like the Valk. My Librarian Dread foresees demand for Valk parts peaking around early Feb as new owners try to kit-bash the ugly out of their new Storm Ravens.

What aggrieves me the most is that I can easily see the potential for this beasty to look fantastic and menacing with only a few modest changes.

I like it. You can't really look at it like you would a jet. You have to look at it more like you would a helicopter or other VTOL craft, like a Blackhawk or Huey.

my main two questions....

= is that techmarine head a seperate peice?

= what manner of person is in the top turrent? is that a servitor???

After looking at it on the 360 pic they have I was still not sure....

but after looking at all the bitz... I saw the Grey Knights icons in the kit so I am going to have to get at least one... *sigh* bye bye money...

Its a dog rough job in Paint but it makes a fair bit of a difference... You'd need to detail the top deck though. Alternatively you could mount a Razorback turret up there and leave the headlights in place either side of the front hatch but I'm not convinced it would look great perched on top...

Dog rough? Nonsense, it looks great! If I ever had any reason to buy a Storm Raven (which I don't) I would probably use your MS Paint conversion as the basis for mine. +1 cookie

I think a razorback turret would be a good solution. It's significantly smaller than that over sized turret.

Looking at it, the models looks fairly good from every angle except the one above, where it looks horrible. Even with the turret removed, the front is still too blocky while there's nothing under the wings and engines. With a dreadnought there it wouldn't look too bad, but they should have just had an extended fuselage with a dreadnought compartment. That would have looked significantly better.

I like your change removing the top turret. I would also move the missile mounts up to the top (for detail), and then move the hurricane bolters to under the wings on some sort of 360 degree mount. This would free up the side doors (which should be accessible) and give the sponsons a better firing position.

It's most entertaining to see all the posts on this and other forums from people who believe they can improve on what GW has done here because the model is so terrible looking to them. It's certainly not GW's best model, but I am not expecting to be more impressed by all the so-called improvements many customers seem to feel they can make to it.

Yes, the marine head is separate. It is a standard marine build. Head, torso halves and arms.

The servitor is a head, body (1 part) and arm.

The kit is amazing as far as bits and build.

No doubt that would work, but that's making the hull almost 50% bigger, which would require another whole sprue, increasing the price even more. I think it's ugly, but in a Space Marine way, which is not a bad thing. I'm also amazed they got such a huge model on so few sprues. This requires a lot of compramise and they did a damn good job considering the constraints.

99.99% of the instances of this happening - I agree with you.

There are some ridiculously talented 40k fans out there however and they continuously surprise me.

I don't suppose anyone has heard any rumors about this being available to other marines in a WD update or anything any time soon, eh? The reason I ask is because my FLGS is having a contest involving the new model and I really like the look of it and the rules for it, but I have NO interest whatsoever in playing blood angels (or any of their counts as cousins for that matter). If there were reliable rumors that in the near future I would be able to use the model with my vanilla marines, I might be willing to participate in the contest. Thanks.

Checked out the finished Stormraven at my local GW today. I have to say, I'm yet too see a photo that does this thing justice. I strongly suggest everyone checks it out in the flesh before making a desion about it.
