I've been working on a large Novamarines army for some time now, and I thought it's about time I started a P&M log about it, so heres some pictures:
Captain Blaylock from Badab War book 1:

Thunder Hammer Terminators:
http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a97/cvife/DSCN0065.jpg
Crazy Dread with a Storm Shield:

And a Predator
http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a97/cvife/DSCN0068.jpg
So, what do people think?
pretty nice.
only two things I dont like:
the red terminator head could use more depth (highlights and a wash with something as dark as badab black).
the predator barrel hole isnt lined up correctly. maybe take a small knive and fix that.
other than that very nice models!

Yeah I'd hit the red with devlin mud. Looks a bit cleaner than black.

pretty nice.

On a related note, the heavy bolters need holes drilled for their barrels too.
Aye to the comments above! But good paint job all around.

very nice. i especially like the simple bases. just the right amount of debris as not to draw attention from the mini.
like the weathering on the pred.
other than the comments above, the aquilla on the dred could be painted differently, plus the headlights on the pred, but its a very clean and nce paintjob in total!

Time for an update:
So I recently got my student loan through, so can anyone guess what the first thing I did was?
That's right, I went and got drunk, and then once I'd recovered from the hangover I decided to spend a rather large amount at forgeworld, and heres some of the stuff I bought:
Firstly, a Siege Dreadnought, basically, just like a lot of this army, I am basing it on heavily on the background from the Badab War books from forgeworld, and in the main entry for the Novamarines there was a picture of a siege dreadnought called "Ancient Herulian" so, I'm making him, following that picture to the closest detail possible. Here's some photo's of the assembled model:
http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a97/cvife/DSCN0224.jpg
http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a97/cvife/DSCN0226.jpg
Also, the first thing on my list was the new mk4 Ironclad Dreadnought, for no reason other than it's awesome:
http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a97/cvife/DSCN0221.jpg

More to come:

Next, I wanted to make some truly cool looking Tactical marines, so I ordered a pack of mk4 and mk5 armor and combined the bits with a standard Tactical Squad and some Devastator bits so that they can have some good heavy weapons, heres the first assembled squad:
http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a97/cvife/DSCN0228.jpg
and the sergeant from the second squad:
http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a97/cvife/DSCN0227.jpg
I also got a Dreadnought Drop Pod but I haven't even started that one, so no photos.
Also, I've been doing a spot of painting, Such as:
A rhino:

And finishing the Crazy Storm Shield Dreadnought:
http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a97/cvife/DSCN0233.jpg
Coursework permitting I should have another update soon.
What do people think?

nice work mate. always enjoy seeing FW models, and really looking forward to seeing how yours turn out once theyre painted. How are the FW tactical marine kits to work with?
Cvife
01-07-2011, 05:53 PM
The FW tactical marines are identical to the normal plastic marines to assemble except that they don't come with bolters and the torsos are in single pieces. They fit together the same a a tactical squad and are therefore completely compatible, so yeah, there a very good purchase for any space marine player.

Well, I've been painting when I should be working, but it's fine, I'm not panicking at all...
anyway, here's an update of what i've been up to:
Half a painted tactical squad:
http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a97/cvife/DSCN0246.jpg
The weathering effect went a little wrong on the sergeant's helmet, but I'll fix it when I have time:
http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a97/cvife/DSCN0247.jpg
And here's a couple of my favorite models from the squad so far:
http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a97/cvife/DSCN0249.jpg
http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a97/cvife/DSCN0250.jpg
Because mk4 armour is so cool.

And just a little bit more:
I started painting the Ironclad, and so far I'm pleased with the results:
http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a97/cvife/DSCN0253.jpg
And I've finally been working on some objectives, like everything in this army, I want them based on the Badab War, so, I went for dead marines from the traitor chapters, heres the first WIP of a Lamenter:

Looking good, just one small thing though. I'm seeing a couple brush lines/streaks on the blue of the dread, its not a huge thing but if you give it a little bit extra lick of paint to touch it up for the solid coat.
On the dead termie its looking good.

And here comes another update:
I finally built the Lucius Pattern Drop Pod, something I never want to do again:
http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a97/cvife/DSCN0255.jpg
and it even fits a normal sized dreadnought complete with base:
http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a97/cvife/DSCN0256.jpg
Here's a work in progress shot of the siege dreadnought hmm, beginning to look like I have a bit of an addiction to Dreadnoughts, I think I'll stop at 6!:
http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a97/cvife/DSCN0262.jpg
and finally another WIP shot of the objective
http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a97/cvife/DSCN0265.jpg
I'm sure I'll have another update in a couple of days, perhaps even some in game shots.

Just to point out how geeky I am, just look at my dice:
http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a97/cvife/DSCN0278.jpg
and another tactical squad about to take a charge, they died shortly afterwards!
http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a97/cvife/DSCN0276-1.jpg
It was a Draw in the end, and after 4 games, I learned that siege dreadnoughts are truly useless.
In terms of painting, i've started on the other half of the tactical squad, and started work on a special chaplain based on a mk 4 marine from forgeworld, I'll probably post photos tomorrow night.

I always loved Babdab War armies and Marines with quartered schemes. Your technique is pretty unique, but something about it seems a bit off. You have highlighting down pat, but the thickness and the uneveness of the lines throws off the eye a bit. The shadows of the models could do with a little love, too.

OOH, Shiny new toys!
I went and bought a Land Raider Crusader, even though I couldn't afford it!, but oh well, I guess that means I should do a really good job on it, so I did some custom doors out of plasticard and even though it's a bit pointless, I did the inside:
http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a97/cvife/DSCN0414.jpg
http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a97/cvife/DSCN0416.jpg
I don't have much to do at the moment, so, I spent all day painting it, and what did I learn, well, lots of liturgies and weathering cover up crap painting quite well, so heres some almost finished exterior shots:

I've been a bit distracted over the past couple of days.
The reason?
Minotaurs!
Not the warhammer fantasy model, but the slightly controversial space marine chapter which happens to look really cool.
It all started when I got the second badab war book, personally I didn't find the new book quite as engaging as the first, but that's probably due to it's distinct lack of Novamarines. However, whenever I did take a look at it I kept looking back to the Minotaurs section and admired their paint scheme and background, a sign I think. So I decided to paint up a squad, I chose the second veteran squad which GW released alongside apocalypse a couple of years ago because I think their awesome models, so anyway, here's some photos:
The whole squad:
http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a97/cvife/DSCN0446.jpg
The sergeant, armed with a relic blade which I stole from an old emperor's champion:
http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a97/cvife/DSCN0450.jpg
A nice looking random power weapon guy:
http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a97/cvife/DSCN0451.jpg
And another guy made from one of the old veteran sergeant models:
http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a97/cvife/DSCN0448.jpg
They where really fun to paint, but I doubt I'll do a whole army (but I might use the scheme on an all sanguinary guard army at some point)
Anyway, I should probably get back to the Novamarines really, but not now...

I really like your painting style...i just cant get over the pastel blue....omg...i just cant <gags> your minotaurs are bad ***, and your painting is great just the blue....
That's a very cool metalic scheme you have there. How did you achieve that colour?

It's been a little bit of a while since I've posted, but that's what exams do to people.
I have been busy though, here's some shots of what I've been up to:
I've just about finished the tactical squad with the exception of some final details such as eyes and static grass on the base, but here's the photo:
http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a97/cvife/DSCN0465.jpg
And the most recently finished stuff:
http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a97/cvife/DSCN0466.jpg
I've finished the 'normal' dreadnought (just about):
http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a97/cvife/DSCN0463.jpg
And finally, just because I think I's needed at the moment, an army shot (not all of it, just the new good looking stuff):
http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a97/cvife/DSCN0460.jpg
I've got a pack of MK3 armor on order which I'm going to use for the extra 5 men in a devastator squad as well as the 2nd captain, I should have an update after the weekend.
Anyway, what are peoples thoughts?

nice way to spend uni funds! not a bad idea, i might have to blow some of this loan on 40k. i love seeing successor marine chapters! those minotaurs are the first i've seen close up since they changed the scheme. assuming those are the 'Minotaurs' im thinking about? if they were im slightly gutted they changed the yellow and red stripes. it was such a garish scheme, but at the same time excellent! love those FW deads btw

Yay, time for new stuff!, well, sort of new stuff! well, re-paints...yay!
I have a game of spearhead tomorrow and i've decided that it would be quite fun to use the Outrider Spearhead, which consists of one vehicle of one type and two vehicles of another type which act like an escort to the main vehicle. So based on this idea I wanted to take a Land Raider Crusader full of terminators protected by a couple of land speeders.
But to do that I needed some Land Speeders, Enter crappy looking old white scars Land Speeders which have been sitting in storage and need re-painting!
So heres the result, please note that these took me about 2 hours and are a strictly gaming standard:
http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a97/cvife/DSCN0544.jpg
and with the land raider, I think it looks pretty cool!:
http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a97/cvife/DSCN0549.jpg
http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a97/cvife/DSCN0548.jpg
And as a final thing, heres a photo of a new captain I made, he has a Jump Pack so I can only assume he's the captain of the 8th:

I've finished painting the new captain (well almost), I chose to give him gold trim this time as apposed to the silver trim I normally use.

here's the two captains together:
http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a97/cvife/DSCN0599.jpg
and finally, I did more work on the Thunder Hammer Terminators, with the main point being the helmet on the sergeant and removing some annoying mold lines on the hammers:

Please for the love of god stop over-weathering your stuff! Your paint scheme is awesome... until you over-do weathering and battle damage and then it takes away all the depth and clutters everything up.
Also, do more gold. That is an AMAZING complimentary color to the blue and creme.

Time for another update, and I think this one will either make people laugh out loud, or throw up violently, you'll find out why soon enough!
But before the ridiculous, here's some more Novamarine stuff I've been working on:
firstly, I've almost finished the normal Dreadnought, I've basically added some gold trim, and started work on the wax on the purity seals, all that's left now is to weather the blue areas and to do a couple of fine details like the liturgies on the seals and the lens on the searchlight, here's a photo:
http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a97/cvife/DSCN0610.jpg
I also dug out an old captain from a long dead army made from one of the Masters of the Chapter models, I decided to kitbash him slightly with some other stuff to make a new character for the Novamarines, I only game him a Power Sword and a Bolt Pistol so that if for whatever reason I need a really cheap character, and for some unknown reason don't want to use a chaplain or librarian, I can use this guy, he's not painted yet (well he is, but in the wrong colour scheme!), but here's a photo anyway:

Right, onto the Ridiculousness I mentioned earlier...
Before the Imperial Armour Badab War books were released, when the Novamarines fluff consisted of a drawing, a picture of a scout bike and about 4 lines of information, I had to go with any little thing written about them and use that to develop the army.
One of those little bits of information was another Chapter called the 'Invaders'. In their background it said that they had lost their homeworld in an Eldar attack which was in retaliation for the destruction of a small Eldar Craftworld at the hands of the Invaders, and that because of this, while they rebuilt, what was left of the Invaders where attached to the Novamarines.
That little bit of background led me to make a small army of these guys for fun games (1000 - 1500 pts). But I neither wanted or needed another army from the Space Marine codex, I thought about their background for a bit and decided a few things, based on their name, I would imagine the Invaders use White Scars geneseed (think about the names of their other successors, the marauders, the Rampagers, the Destroyers, The...Storm Lords... well, you get where I'm going here). And that they successfully attacked and destroyed an Eldar craftworld, but didn't stop and consider the consequences, which implies to me that they are absent minded, violent and headstrong and basically, well, nuts. So I decided to use the Blood Angels codex for this one, I know people are moaning, but really, It's not to be beardy (I mean, it's led by Seth and he's about as un-beardy as it gets!), in fact it's mainly so I can use some of the cool stuff the Blood Angels get
The colour scheme for the Invaders is a bright green with yellow/gold trim, taking this into consideration and combined with the fact that I had just seen Grey Death's Sons of Medusa, I decided to go to extremes with this army and make them a hideous florescent green which I think somehow works...
Anyway, if you've just read all that, then congratulations, your prize is to look at these pictures (If you didn't read all that, you can still look at the pictures, but for the record, you're lazy!):
Here's my take on Seth:
http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a97/cvife/DSCN0607.jpg
You can see here how ridiculous he really is, what with his stupid Chainswrd, excess blood and green armor!
Here he is with a squad of Assault Marines:
http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a97/cvife/DSCN0614.jpg
Heres a Baal Predator with nothing but a Flamestorm Cannon which has proven to be utterly useless during games, but it's fun nonetheless and still features in every game I play with the Invaders:
http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a97/cvife/DSCN0603.jpg
And, for comparison, here it is alongside the Novamarines predator (and if you where wondering how I got the Baal predator sponsons for the Novamarines Predator, there's your answer!):
http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a97/cvife/DSCN0605.jpg
Right, if you've looked at all those photos and your eyes still work, congratulations (no prize this time, not even the chance to look at a green tank), next time, I'll post some constructive photos of Novamarines, In the mean time I ask the eternal question... What do people think?
love the invaders!
the colour sheme is so refreshingly different than so many we've already seen from GW and painters.
and it really screams "IN YOUR FACE!" without beeing any kind of khornate (blood&violence is an easy transition into khorne-looking stuff) NOR nurgley (that is hard to acchieve with anything thats green AND dirty!).

It's been a while, well, a week or so, but here's an update.
I've almost finished the siege dreadnought, I tried to keep him as faithful to the artwork of Ancient Herulian from Badab war 1 as I could, but there are a couple of differences, E.G his chest eagle is supposed to be gold (might still change that) and i gave him a searchlight to keep him WYSIWYG.
Here's a picture from the book (I'm sorry if I shouldn't post this, if it's a problem, let me know and I'll get rid of it nice and quick!):

Well, It's been ages since I last posted on this thread, but it's been a really busy time for me recently.
So, what have I been up to?
Firstly, I decided to re-do Captain Mordaci Blaylock, based on the Forgeworld Huron model, I not as pleased with this one as I am with the other one, But he does look more impressive on the battlefield!
http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a97/cvife/DSCN0863.jpg
Next up, I recently took this army to a tournament, and after reading the rules for chaplain Cassius, I felt he was too good not to take (and he was an asset), so I made an adequate stand in for him:
http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a97/cvife/DSCN0861.jpg
Also, here's a Razorback:

The Ironclad emerges from his drop pod and engages a Warhound Titan:

A tank's eye's view of the Novamarines:
http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a97/cvife/DSCN0859.jpg
And that will probably be my last post on this thread for a while (it will return!)
As mentioned earlier, I recently took this army to a two day tournament, in which it failed in every possible way. I came away with 1 win, 2 draws and 3 losses, I came 23rd out of 30 which was very disappointing, however, worse still, I did very poorly in the painting competition, with my army only gaining 2 votes, and those where from my two team mates!
So, that result has led to me giving this army a rest for a while.
My next project will be the expansion of my chaos army with the addition of around 1500 pts of renegade guard, I will start a new thread on that one next week.
Oh well, what do people think of this new stuff?

I wouldn't worry too much about the painting results - usually with Player's Choice awards, unusual armies tend to do much better than marines. Everyone is tired of looking at marines, even very well painted marines. Your army looks great imo.

I too am building a Novamarine army for youngest two. I like your Novamarine force and it has prompted me to start to finish the building and then begin the painting.
I thought your army looked great. Don't worry about the painting comp. your time will come for podium.
Your renegade legion looks very ncie too. I see FW conversion kits am I right?
