So I recently bought a cheap job lot of marines off of eBay, most of whom were horribly covered in about an inch of paint, and missing huge swathes of detail to misapplied superglue and poly cement. Amongst them was a dreadnought who was pretty much wrecked; layers of paint, improperly put together - basically broken.

So, with no possible way to make it look any worse, I decided to just have a go at building a Death Company Furioso, in the style of the new Forge World MK IV Ironclad. Revered Brother Amatis is the result. I shaved down a MK 6 helmet to convert it into a MK 5 one. I've tried to paint the blood fists to look like they're drenched with gore.

Apologies in advance for the terrible picture quality.

Storywise, I've recently been watching a lot of Ian MacKellan, and so the Dreadnought has a story influenced by "Gods And Monsters"; originally Amatis was gay, and fell deeply in love with another of his battle-brothers. The two fought bravely side-by-side through hundreds of crusades...until his partner was killed. Within the hour, Amatis had fallen to the Black Rage, and was consigned to a Dreadnought as the only way to contain hs fury. He carries the skull of his former lover in a gilded box, embellished with a seal of filial devotion swearing that when Amatis falls, he and his love will be together in death.

here's the detail shot of the box.

I had to build the right blood fist entirely from the ground up. It used to be a very glooped up assault cannon. I think it looks okay.

I've also made a Death Company Chaplain.

No story for him yet, but give it time... :)

Just need to make a scenic base and some scroll work, and he's done.

Those are some nice looking models mate. I especially like the armour on the dread and the pose of the chaplain.

Yeah; seemed more interesting to make him gay. I get a bit sick of all the action hero cliches; why should an action hero need to be straight? I also see no reason why a marine's upgrades would alter his sexuality, and given that 5% of the population "dance on the other side of the ballroom", it seems a little unrealistic that there would be only hetero marines. Yes they're celibate except for the Space Wolves, but just because you're not having sex, that doesn't mean you're asexual. Plus, the hardest squaddie I ever met in my life way gay as a lark (and was not a fan of the portrayal of gay men as effeminate and lacking in masculinity - and he was so virile that if you shook his hand you got chest hair), so it's kind of a shout-out to him.

It's also a reference to the Spartans.

Essentially I like narratives that I haven't seen before, and it seemed like a logical, tragic reason why one would go mad and join the Death Company.

Homosexual marines is an interesting thought, but I would put to the debate that there are no straight marines. In fact, I would have to be of the opinion that marines are basically chemical/genetic eunichs. I dont think a tender emotion like love would ever have any benefit in a killing machine, and it would probably would have been the second emotion to get cut from a marines psyche right after fear.

PS.
Those are some nice models you got there :D

Nice models, your right though that the picture quality hampers my ability to properly assess them. Might I suggest a little less direct light on the model? Perhaps that might help some.

As a mod note, lets try to keep focus on the painting of the models and CC towards them. I don't want another public thread on our hands based on the orientation or lack thereof of marines. Regards.
