While playing a game last night, we had a little situation occur.

Logan (solo) was next to a Storm Raven. But was poised for a charge directly to Astaroth and Death Co, his charge path taking him to btb with Astaroth.

The Storm Raven was shot down and wrecked, a Valkyrie model was used as the Storm Raven. When the SR was wrecked, it was taken off it's base and it ended putting models into dangerous terrain, where previously there was none, specifically Logan and Astaroth. My opponent claimed that I had to take off the model and leave the base as the wreckage marker, I argued that it's the vehicle and not the base. Thereby focing Logan to charge through dangerous terrain (no frag grenades) to strike last and most likely die, which is what my opponent didn't want, obviously.

Who was right?

It depends

Are you counting the wings, tail etc of the model or just the fuselage? You either count the fuselage only, and it wouldn't count as dangerous terrain, but you can say you can see the model to shoot if all you can see is wings or tail

OR you count all of it, can shoot the wings, tail, them going into terrain counts as a test etc, and the wings count as dangerous

Also i'm a little confused as to how Logan could charge into Asorath if there was a model (the raven) in the way? Surefuly for it to cause dangerous terrain it must have been present in the first place. I assume you mean just the wing was in over them....

We tend to play fuselage only, so the wings wouldn't interfere, but its whatever you play as shooting that counts...

Sounds like something you needed to address before the game began, to avoid this situation. This seems very much like one of those sticky wickets that both players need to agree on beforehand.

The way it played out seems sensible, but then, the other way you put forward seems equally good too. I'd just suggest discussing it well ahead of time in future games, to avoid your opponent suddenly being wrong-footed by a tactical situation caused by unavoidable real-world problems, rather than an in-game one. I can definitely see why they felt annoyed by the situation.

The way i see it, is you wouldn't make an eldar player leave the flying base for a falcon instead of just placing the falcon down as the wreckage, especially as the flying base is the same size for vipers.

So on that basis, i would say yes the model is used and not the base.

having said that, i cant say what the official ruling on that situation would be.
