What is the appropriate base size for beats in 40k? I am using Chaos Warhounds to represent the new Dark Eldar Khymera, but the rectangular bases they come with do not seem right in the 40k-round-base standard. The size of the critters seem to me to be a medium base...

Opinions welcome but some more official reference is preferred. And before someone cite the BRB on "use base supplied with", these are fantasy models being used in 40k so that does not apply.

Thank You!

I would assume 40mm round base if they will fit on it.

There isn't really official guidance for these types of conversions as far as I am aware. Bike bases are the closest to the warhound model that's what the seekers of slaanesh are supplied with (also beasts/cavalry). I think there's an argument for terminator bases too though, the models presumably won't fit on regular bases.

My intention is to use biker bases for my khymarae (also basing them on warhounds) and terminator bases for my razorwing flocks (using tyranid gargoyles) and clawed fiends (not sure how to convert these yet, maybe chaos spawn) as these are both multi-wound.

I'm pretty sure the old beasts came on a biker sized base... but this is all from memory (read: imagination) so someone who used to play DE and used them could tell you better.

Right now, whatever size you think works best. I might try a smaller kind of bike base by cutting a 25mm round in half and attach both ends to a 25mm square.

Depends really. I know the old metal chaos warhounds came with both 40 round bases and the normal calvary fantasy bases. Whichever you prefer.

The old model came with the fantasy-style cavalry base. As far as I know, that would still be the "official" base, but I don't think anyone would complain if they were mounted on 40mm bases either.

I've already made 25 warhound-based Khymerae, and I put them on regular 25mm bases. The models are about the same size as gaunts, and fit just fine on regular infantry bases. The old warp beasts came with square cavalry bases, but no current model in 40k does, and bike/terminator bases would just be too big IMO, especially since they are 1W, T3 creatures.

Of course, that might just be because I plan to have 75 of them in my army...

Thanks for the input. I believe I will go with the 40mm round bases as they are both more appropriate for the size of the models and inline with the 40k base styles.
