Ok, I've been thinking about starting another army for a while now, and the ongoing process of repainting 100+ guardsmen sealed the deal! After thinking around a bit, I figured the only one that I really fancied doing was Marines. After reading through the Badab War supplement, I came to like the idea of the Star Phantoms, and picking up a decent bargain on eBay, I've started on a couple of testers before they arrive.

I have a few ideas for the chapter, for instance, I'm going to have a go at giving them stalker boltguns, the silenced ones, and possibly cloaks. The former should be fairly easy, the latter will be greenstuff galore >_>

However, the first proud member of the chapter is below, though his armour is still being worked on by the techmarines! (This is a tester model, and my first marine, so please excuse the messy painting!)

Minus the rough painting it looks pretty good. It will be pretty hard to get good cloaks on every marine though, because you'd go for a more stealthy look I'd assume and the only cloaks done on marines are big billowing ones.

Looking good.
For capes you could try using the Scout cloaks possibly?

What colors did you use to paint?

Well, the cloaks may take a while to get around to, I'm just going to focus on painting for now, get a decent looking army together before going the extra step ;)

Colours wise I used Codex Grey mixed darkened with Chaos Black for the darker armour, Codex Grey for the lighter armour, Hawk Turquoise for the aquila with ice blue drybrushed on the wings and enchanted blue drybrushed on the central part and the wing supports (for want of a better description). The shoulder pads are hawk turquoise base with a mixture of hawk turquoise and shadow grey on top, the trim is skull white. The helmet is hawk turquoise with an ice blue drybrush, and the backpack hawk turquoise mixed with shadow grey and chaos black.

On top of that, the armour has badab black wash in all the little debossed detail, and some of the more obvious joints etc. The pads have Asurmen Blue around the edges, the helmet has eyes and targetter of blood red with baal red wash, and the vents are done with asurmen blue wash. Oh, the belt buckle is hawk turquoise with asurmen blue wash in the debossed line in the middle and around the circle, then enchanted blue drybrushed on top. The purity seal is blood red watered down some, and the parchment Scorched brown base with bleached bone on top, chaos black for the writing.

Ok, the lot of marines finally arrived today, due to issues in my having the wrong address set on ebay >_>

And my clear decal paper + spray varnish arrived as well, so I'll be sorting the first page of decals out in the next couple of days, as well as some for my Guard :)

The overall build quality of the marines leaves a little to be desired in some cases, but others are pretty good, the painting is rubbish, so much so that I may actually need to strip some rather than just spray them.

PS: Shadow Queen, I approve of your avatar ;)

We have been asked to make some Star Phantom pads by another player, if you want give me an email and maybe you 2 can cooberate and split the design cost? They should look just like the icons barring any issues witht he original creator (still waiting on that one).

That'd be awesome, unfortunately that player is me. I didn't realise you didn't get my last email on it though, I'm going to think on it ;)

Yes, but the Mantis Warriors aren't the Star Phantoms, therefore you don't use them together. Also, I don't know how much I'll use the Star Phantoms special rule.

After all you can use teh special ability only if your opponent agrees or you are in a campaign using the ruleset.

But after all im considering starting a Star Phantoms army my self most to anger some gamer i know who is a bit overenthusiastic with his Astral Claws / Red Corsairs :D

And I'm making them because I love the fluff and the colour scheme.

As an aside, I have my first DIY transfer in water in front of me, about to be applied :)

Unfortunately I don't have the micro-sol or micro-set yet so that'll have to wait to see how they help.
