Ok this one came up at our last club meeting.

The IG codex says that 5 models may fire out of the top hatch of a chimera. The question is, what is considered the top hatch?

Is it the hatch on the hull towards the rear of the vehicle, over where the troops would be and the lasguns are fixed. (This is what I think it is)

OR is it the "top hatch" on the turret?

This is an important difference because you get like 2.5 more inches to fire.

What do you guys think?

its the hatch at the rear above the troop compartment. the turret hatch is occupied by the comander

It's the rectangular doors above the passenger compartment

Point at a hatch on the chimera, and tell your opponent, "this is the hatch".

While most people play it as being the big top hatch on the rear of the Chimera, we have to realize that the answer cannot be found within the rules or codex.

Also correct.

I was reading it some more and in the IG codex entry for the chimera it is most obviously refering to the hatch that has "lasgun emplacements on its flanks". Which really leads me to think the intended hatch is the rear one.

Unfortunately, the last document I can recall in which the fire point was identified was a Chapter Approved article from third edition. Considering that the model hasn't changed, it should still apply. It is finding the article to show your opponents that would be the problem.

Not that it means much, but it is the large hatch over the troops compartment that is the fire point. The cupola hatch would be occupied by the vehicle commander and I doubt that there would be enough space in the crew compartment for fire guardsmen to join them in there and all fire out of the commander's hatch.

my opinion on the matter is that for simplicity of rules, and measureing the guardsmen fire from the top hatch, which would by definition be the front hatch, on the turret, if the rear hatch was where you were supposed to fire from, it would say rear hatch in my opinion.
