Take with salt?

I have been reading in the BoLS rumours section and a bit on Warseer, and people say "Take with Salt". I understand what it suppose to mean, take the rumour lightly, but where or how did this start?

What does it really mean? I can't see making the rumour taste better, or preserve it, so while I do understand the gist of it, I don't really understand what it means.

... means - like in modern English "with a pinch of salt" - that something should not be taken too literally
