I'm going to be moving to London in a week or two to do a 1 year masters. I was wondering if anyone could give me a rief low down on the gaming scene there? I mostly play necromunda but also 40k- I'm more into the painting and casual gaming side of the hobby- All this talk of leaf blowers and melta is the new plasma et etc leaves me cold. I still play with pretty much the same army I played with at 15.

So does anyone know any good clubs where you can go and have a nice casual game, see some new stuff and meet nice people?

You're gonna have the same problem I do on here...this is (primarily) a Yank forum (well thats the impression I get). Best bet over here is find your closest GW (theres like 20 in London) and go to their Vets night to meet people who enjoy this.

And remember this current mech/melta spammy love is not seen over here very much! Again just my impression within my gaming circle

Yeah bud, the few gamers i know from the UK are not your typical American WAAC guys.

They have stated to me a number of times that the game scene is much more hobby friendly there.

Well as far as meta game goes it doesn't exist in the UK, you might find some slight trends at the big tourneys but nothing like wat you get in the US

I realise this is mostly a us forum but there are enough from the united kingdom to go round. I'll be living in Lambeth which is a bit of a trek from east london ( i think)

Slightly off topic- what is the general view of lambeth? the few english people I've met have given an "oh dear" sigh and said something along hte line of "i'm sure it'll be fine" which is as reassuring as a donut shaped life raft.

Unless you move somewhere no one can afford in real life then this, I've found, is the standard London 'welcome'; I'm moving north-east - "oh...er...ok"; I'm moving south of the river - "really?" etc haha

I've been here a year and haven't got round to playing a game yet! I'd guess your local GW would be Oxford Street (Plaza shopping centre) and they're usually pretty handy with the knowledge, I've heard a couple of the guys talking about clubs and how they generally hate tournament style gaming, so hopefully you'll find something suitable.

If you do please post it on here as I'm lazy and have made no progress at sorting this out for myself !!

Well i am in Dagenham (more like essex but the council thinks london borough sounds better) There is a gaming club here on a sunday evening. Otherwise i have been to oxford street and its kinda small but the locals are friendly. The plus side to london is getting around on the tube is pretty easy so you will not have much trouble finding some gamers. I have come from Nottingham to live here and miss Warhammer World with my mates but it's not all bad here.

As for the comments, it's pretty much true. Unless you can afford to live somewhere stupidly expensive then thats the sort of welcome you will get. I had the same preconcieved ideas about Dagenham untill i lived here, truth is it's safer than half of Nottingham!

On a side note, Dark Shpere is an indipendant games store in central london offering a good discount on GW so they might be worth a look too.

London crowd represent!

I'm in Tooting myself. Ridiculous, I know.

And Lambeth is alright. I had friends who lived in nearby Kennington until recently.

I'd recommend swinging by the GW Brentcross store. The manager there is a great fellow and hobbyist. He should be able to help you find some games, and you'll get some great hobby advice too.

I and my escher have now made it over :)

I checked out the small GW shop in covent garden but it wasn't much use?

can anyone recommend a good FLGS- preferably one with a wide range of minatures where you can paint for free?

Well, welcome to the big smoke!

GW Oxford St (in the small Plaza Shopping centre) is bigger than the Convent one so you could maybe paint there. Someone else previously mentioned Dark Sphere near Waterloo tube. I've only ever dealt with them for 'net purchases (20% off GW - worth it!) so dunno how they are for paint space.

Cross Gaming Club have just wrapped up a Necromunda campaign this weekend I think. Find them on the net and check out their forum - I went on for the first time a couple of weeks ago and they were pretty helpful. They meet Tuesday nights and Sundays, from what I can gather Sundays are pretty relaxed so you might be able to go paint there. Again, I've not been down yet, but will be doing once my army is back in one piece, they also play Warmachine, Hordes, FOW, Infinity etc

Beyond that find a window and take advantage of all the beautiful sunshine we have right now (jokes)!
