Well, Grey Hunters are solid troop choices, so I think it's hard to go wrong there. With that being said, Long Fangs are pretty amazing so ensure you've got a squad or two of them, likely with missile launchers. :)

Honestly, I doubt you'll end up using the scouts much as snipers. The SW scouts are elites and have good use with their different infiltrate ability, suggesting that they're more accomplished with a close quarters, mobile role. Heavy weapons won't really help them.

so should I trade the snipers & get another unit of regular scouts? will I use 10 or are the 5 scouts that come in the BF suffice?

You could get transports for your troops, some rhinos could be very useful as grey hunters and blood claws don't have heavy weapons and benefit greatly from increased mobility

What ever you do, dont EVER go for Blood Claws! or sky claws etc...

what about my question with the scouts? are 5 enough or do I need 10?

Most people say 5 is enough, To blow up a tank, cause some mischief and then get heavy flamered out of existence...

Instead of a land speeder I'd get a 2 wolf pack boxes instead of 1. Speeders are nice, but not mandatory, and you need more bodies in the army.

I like using units of 5 scouts w/melta bombs and a meltagun, and I outflank with them. At 110 points they're a nice unit for sneak attacking an enemy tank, but they probably won't survive long even with greater numbers, so I'd just use 5.

Scout snipers don't get much use in the Space Wolves army because long fangs are a lot better, and there aren't enough elite slots to spare. The main reason scout snipers get a lot of use in regular SM armies is because in those armies they're troops.

I see. oh well I guess there going back.

Should I get another box of Terminators or is 5 enough? & how should I equipt them for both cc & range attire?

I'm starting SW too and this is my planned configuration for my termies:

2 with Power Weapons and Storm Bolters = 66pts
1 with Power Fist and Storm Bolter = 43 pts
1 with Power Fist, Storm Bolter, and Cyclone Missile Launcher = 73 points
1 with Thunder Hammer, Storm Shield = 63 points

Together that comes to 245 points. The 2 power weapons can strike at initiative to limit incoming attacks, the storm shield can soak up a power weapon hit, and then three guys (hopefully) hit back hard. There's also 4 storm bolter shots + 2 missile launcher shots. I feel like it's a good mix of firepower and assault ability, but I haven't play tested them.

NICE! goodluck.

well, you will want to have one of your terminators equipped with a cyclone missile launcher and no other wargear, as he should be put into your long fangs. other than that, i dont really use terminators except in large games or the loganwing, in which case it is hard to go wrong with wolf claws and put into a crusader. if you want both ranged and combat, go for combi-melta and single wolf claw on them. considering you will have 30 wolves to build, go ahead and get the speeder and configure it as mm/hf. i would build 27 as grey hunters and the other 3 as powerfist/ combi-melta guys to go in your grey hunters. you need a wolf standard and mark of the wulfen in each squad if you plan on getting them into combat. happy wolfing

WeeDawgNYC
09-14-2010, 01:29 PM
Thanks muffin, I was also considering building 3 missle launchers(x1 each unit) for the hunters & 2 more (x2 each unit) for my long fangs. is that legal combined with the options you suggested (pf/cm standard/wulfen)?

I also have a unit of 10 skyclaws, how should these guys be equipped?

WeeDawgNYC
09-14-2010, 01:53 PM
ok so I picked up these as well

x1 Land Speeder
x1 Drop Pod
x1 Razorback
x1 Wolf Pack box
x1 Assault Squad box (traded the Sniper Scouts in for these)
x1 SW accessory sprue
x2 SW shoulder pads
x1 AoBR Commander

now I also got some random bits:

x10 SW backpacks
x8 wolf claws (4 sets L&R handed)
x4 power fists

Do I have enough Claws/Fists? the backpacks will be used for the Tacticle Squad that came in the SM Battle Force along with some accessories from the wolf pack sprues that should make them look wolfy enough.

the SW accessorie sprue from GW has 5 alternate sculpt torso's wich Ill use for my Thunderwolf Cavalry.the rest of the sprue will be used to dress up the 2 commanders.

I am also converting 2 Rune priests & 2 standard bearers from left over WoC warrior models.

So hows it looking so far? btw the Fenris Wolf from heroclix makes a great wolf mount & for only $3.00 each you cant go wrong. plus the benifit of not having to splinter, warp or snap like the resin ones out there.

Your Grey Hunters can't have heavy weapons, their only options are flamers, meltas, and plasma guns. However they can have 2 special weapons. Works out better for them IMO since they can't combat squad and are probably going to be mobile.

so based on your expertise with what I have so far (I cant tell what a melta, flamer or plasma gun(s) look like yet) hor many of those do I have?

I REALLY hate to recommend anything at this point - it depends entirely on one's playing style.

Flamers are pretty obvious to look at. Look for the "ignitor" at the barrle of the weapon, fuel cylinder at the bottom.

Melta has a perforated "Tin Can" muzzle with a power cord looping under the gun.

Plasma Gun (Wolf Style) has a padded "Telescoping" gun stockwith a more rounded narrowing of the muzzle. Barrle appears off-center - towards the top of the gun.

Each of the new Wolf Sprues should have a plasma. I think the older style Wolf Sprues had the Meltas. My Flamers were with the standard Marine Sprues.

Someone else know where all the weapons are found?

Key Points:
- You only get 2 Special Weapons if you take a squad of 10 Grey Hunters (we'll ignore the Blood Claws for now)
- If you add a Wolf Guard to the unit, you can't take two special weapons on a squad mounted in a Drop Pod or Rhino. You can never have two special weapons in a Razorback.
(Not quite true - you CAN buy special weapons for Wolf Guard in form of CombiWeapons.)
- Some people prefer to put two of the same Special Weapon in the same squad - it "specializes" the unit and the unit becomes more effective in that roll.
- Some people will mix and match to make a unit more versatile.

If you are planning to add a Wolf Guard (Vet Sgt) to your Grey Hunters, it usually doesn't matter, you'll (usually) only have the option of 1 weapon. Might want to take a mix - a different weapon with each squad, or go with all Meltas to give all the squads some serious Anti-Tank ability.

Now - I like Plasma Rifles if I do 2 Special Weapons. Good against both infantry and light to medium armour. Disadvantage is - you can't charge into combat if you shoot the plasma rifles - they're Rapid Fire only.

Others swear by double Meltas - Assault weapons that will take out any tank and if you miss (Russ Forbid!), you can still assault and use Power Fist or Melta Bombs/Krak Grenades. (I find range too short on Meltas, but it's a personal preference thing.)

Flamers are great for clearing out buildings, but I usually give them to Blood Claws (with their Ballistic Skill, they need all the help they can get!).

Here's a list of bits showing each of the individual special weapons. http://www.bitsandkits.co.uk/space-marines-space-marine-ranged-weapons-c-6_20_23.html

Also, the Heroclix wolves is a ingenious idea. I'll have to pass that onto my friend...

On the matter of space wolves, what type of army are you going for?

Mechanized, Foot, Hybrid? Armor Heavy, Rhino/Razorback spam/Landraiders, Predators and dreads, drop-pods, a few large Grey Hunter squads/many smaller squads? You have a lot of options.

On the HQ, I would highly suggest a Rune Priest. The Psychic Powers are pretty damn good (Murderous Hurricane and Living Lightning is one of the best combos) and their rune weapons negate enemy psychic powers pretty decently as well.

and when it comes to buying transports, don't bother buying a rhino, always get razorbacks or WW's if you like them, especially with SW's bc that works well. That way you have a rhino and a RB\WW with a simple switch of the top doors.

PS: I'm in upper manhattan, so if you want to meet up some time for a game PM me.

true, I already have the rhino that came with the BF & I purchased a RB so my next purchase will be the WW so I can have x3 Rhino's or one of each.

pm'd, I used to play fantasy (dwarves baby) waaaaaay back in like 4th ed. and when i got to the city met a friend and saw he played 40K. Tried to get him into fantasy, he wasn't so sure, so he talked me into 40K fell in love with it. Want to get back into Fantasy as do the other guys i game with. We were waiting for 8th to drop and to finish our current 40k army projects.

i've got the old High Elf and Ork boxed set, unassembled in my closet...that was my first attempt to get back into Warhammer back in the day.:D

Hey maybe I can help you guys get back in.

The new High Elf stuff that recently came out is sickkk... I also have a Wood Elf army that Im looking to get rid of to help me fund my 40k stuff. keep in mind 8th just started & Im even just still learning.
You can even look into a "Battle for Skull Pass" set on ebay there going for super cheap & Dwarves by far are the best army in 8th edition.

So my stuff came in & Im about to assemble my Speeder & asked around as to the best equipment combination(s) to use are & most suggested MM & HF but how about multimelta & heavy bolter? & what if i were to also add the missle launcher as well?

I was thinking this for range purposes ML @48", HB @36" & MM @24"
seems like most range would be covered, plus its a combo of anti tank & anti infantry.
Ive been rading some forums & I havnt really found a build like this yet, does this mean its not a good option?

therealjohnny5
09-25-2010, 08:27 PM
you can only take two weapons on a single speeder. if you're talking about a full squad then yeah this would work. otherwise you can only do 2. two thought processes on this, the specialized or the generalized. a General build would be MM and Heavy Flamer. Specialized would be Assault cannon and Heavy Bolter, or HB and Heavy Flamer. So that would be the two approaches to take. I think it's dependent on the role the speeder is going to play in the given situation. Again magnets are a good idea.

Really, Ive been told otherwize. are you 100% on that?

yup. if you look under the Speeder entry in the codex you have to replace the HB with a Heavy Flamer or MM and can upgrade to a typhoon\tornado with adding one Assault Cannon\Heavy Flamer\ML\MM so no dice on 3 weapons. Not to mention they are so fragile you don't want to dump that many points into them.

Honestly for tank busting attack bikes with MM are a bit better, objective contesting last minute then Speeders.

Don't forget they have a better bs than marine scouts and the counter attack rule making them superior to normal scout snipers. If you can't see a use for marine sniper scouts, don't use them. If you do see a use, these are a better option. I don't personally use my wolf scouts as snipers (I use two plasma pistols, a melta gun and melta bombs) but I can see their uses.
